Top 10 Cell Phone Myths Explained

Cell phones crash planes
Myth: If you use a cell phone while flying, the signal can interfere with the plane's compass and navigation systems, possibly leading to a crash.
True or False? It's debatable. Anyone who's flown knows that flight attendants ask you to turn off all electronics, including phones, until after takeoff. According to one pilot who was interviewed by ABC News, the reason for this is so you pay attention to safety instructions, and, in the case of an aborted liftoff, "I don't want a laptop flying across the cabin." A UK study in 2003 showed some interference with compasses and navigation systems, but that was done in controlled settings, not on real planes. More recent studies by the NASA and the FAA have found no instances where a cell phone caused a crash, although some pilots claimed otherwise. Currently, the approach is "better safe than sorry," but they say that systems in aircraft are shielded enough not to be disrupted. As soon as it's proven that there's no link or threat, you'll be able to talk someone's ear off instead of watching the crappy in-flight movie.

Splash,
Your comment about the Cell Towers not being close enough is highly inaccurate. No commercial aircraft flys higher than 10 miles above the surface of the earth. Communications satellites orbit at around 24,000 miles above the surface of the earth (yes that is twenty four thousand miles in a GEO orbit). Wherever a cell tower is below you, you can have a signal. Cell phones do not work from satellites. ;-]

I would think planes are often more than ten miles from a cell tower (figuring distance as the crow flies), so I would think as one is flying you'd be conatantly in and out of cell tower range, just like you can be that way on the ground when off the Interstate system and away from cities. So I'd think that on many plane trips, such as over the Rocky Mountains, you'd have difficulty maintaining a conversation on a cell phone?
logremMar 24th 2008 5:40PM
There are satellite cell phones, they are very expensive and only four companies make them. Just search "satellite cell phones" and you can look into them. Like all other cell phone services from towers, it will depend on where you are as to whether or not you will get reception. What's the difference, really, whether you are talking to a fellow paasenger or a cell phone?

There IS something worse actually. For example when someone uses all caps and misspells every other word while seemingly trying to get the point across that they are better or smarter than anyone else.

Ok... so like the article says: If we aren't 100% sure... WHY TAKE THE RISK??? Rather be safe than sorry... Take the two-three hour ride as a rest... enjoy being disconnected for a minute fromor the technology that makes you a slave once you are back on solid ground... Recline your seat and enjoy the flight... The problem is cell phones make you a slave... Wasn't life just fine before they excisted?? No one died from lack of a phone (unless you were stranded in the middle of no where without help!!!!! Im 22 years old... Ive had these dumb gizmos since I was in the fifth grade for safety reasons, of course once high school hit I was addicted but I realized how stupid it all is... Dude, turn off your phone once you confirm you are boarding... That's it; who cares... And if you are "Oh So Important Neurosurgeon- Who is on his(her) way to save an unfortunate child from a brain tumor, who's parents obviously want to keep tabs on you" then leave a message on your voicemail so when they call they know you are flying and you'll be in touch as soon as the plane lands!!! Grrrrrr

What signal are you going to get at 30,000 feet, and if you could get it, it wouldn't last more than a few secs!! Get a Grip!

IN A MICROWAVE OVEN?
EXPERT DISCUSSES CONTROVERSY
OVER CELL PHONE SAFETY.
Today there are an estimated 3 billion cell phones in the world. In Europe 80% of the population uses them, compared to 60% in the US. The US. Market is growing quickly especially among teens and children who are at the greatest risk. . All this points to one fact: cell phones are BIG business. Even though the health risks from radiation are being reported and the evidence is mounting, the industry giants continue to claim their products are safe.
Shelly Kalnitsky, an authority on cell phone issues wants to ask you three questions.
1. Do you now believe nicotine is non-addictive?
2. Do you now believe that cigarette smoking does not cause lung cancer?
3. Do the words “radiation” and “microwaves” sound like something you want going into your brain?
“The jury is still out on the extent of the long term effects of cell phones” says Kalnitsky “but we are discovering more evidence of cell phone dangers.” He points to an independent reporting site www.cprnews.com which documents hundreds of articles , studies and research on cell phone dangers under world news.
He discusses :
• How the industry suppresses negative stories.
• The increased risks cell phones pose to teens and children.
• Why current hands free kits are more dangerous.
• New products that can reduce the risk.
• Safety tips in cell phone usage.
Kalnitsky is an expert on the subject and can add insight on recent scientific findings as well as discuss protection devices such as shields, new hands free radiation free kits and safety tips that can offer a remedy for cell phone users.

I am a Flight Attendant we are trained for emergencies that will save your life. We are not your waitress or there for you to hit on. All airline companies have what is called recurrent training every two years to keep us on our toes in flight and cell phones have been a big issue.
Cell phones on certain aircraft does interfere with the smoke alarms in the lavatory and cargo hold areas as they are on the same frequency as cell phones. The FAA shut the use of electric devices from take off until landing in an effort to avoid emergency landing due to smoke alarms going off in flight which by the way is an emergency and requires an emergency landing and requires emergency landing procedures. These procedures will delay your arrival and the departure of the following flight causing a canceled flight for someone else in an effort to get back on our schedule.
This will no doubt be the fault of the crew since everything winds up on us and we stand there and take the abuse from passengers on every flight. Take off and landing are when most accidents and emergencies occur.
Those of you who leave your cell phones on during flight just so you can see what can happen here it is ...you have no service you are placing everyone else on that flight in danger of smoke alarms going off and I have explained the procedure for that already. You are simply put rude.
The crew will take the abuse of the passengers, we will calm the frightened child traveling without a parent something I never understood about how parents are to cheap to travel with their child reassuring them things will be all right. We try but we are very busy in this type of situation.
We will try to calm the 90 yrs old man that he will be OK. We will reassure the handicapped person that we will assign another passenger to help them deplane since we will be very busy.
You think you have gotten away with leaving your phone on but the attendants are trained to look for things. If you have not be approached yet and you land on my plane I will issue you a yellow sheet and you will be met at the gate by police, you will pay a $2000.00 find for interfering with a crew member and I will not take the abuse from other passengers I will direct them to you, after all your forgetfulness is what got us into this situation not mine.
I don't have the privilege of forgetting something. There have been improvements made to the safety devices that we try to tell you about but if your talking during our presentation you will the one that panics and the 1st time flyer next to you who was afraid to say anything couldn't hear our presentation is frightened so you have disrupted his flight. Unless you OWN the plane you don't have the right to do that.
Do you really think we want to say the same thing 10 times a day? Get over yourself. We have signed contracts not to speak with media or do just this Blog but sometimes we need to vent as well we are humans. Just remember we are someone's wife, sister or girlfriend so if we were related to you would you want someone treating your wife this way and by the way there are many times that our husbands are on the flight with us. Ladies who sit in the front and HAVE to talk to your husband during our safety speech listen up WE Don't WANT YOUR HUSBAND! We have our own and if not there are pilots so get over it. How is it that when some people board a plane they think there are no rules, some people become so self serving and stupid it disgusts us. The answer is because you have left your comfort zone and have entered ours and we know this so let us do our jobs. Come in sit down and relax, the flight won't be that long unless you interfere.

Gosh, Lynn is a classic,"Needs to get laid."
She might take an English class as well, include spelling. Oh yea, while you are in school, find a career you enjoy and not one that makes you a Beoch. We all have our Cross's dear in our profession. Get over it.

marwaytur A classic response from someone that thinks I am looking at there husband or boyfriend or want to be something....oh maybe me....oh yea there is a rule about the mile high club too.. I let people have there fun but you come on aboard I think I can find one of those yellow sheets for you, even if you didn't do anything wrong all I have to say is that you did. Its up to you to prove it in court not me. I have the right to say weather you fly or not I can make every flying trip you have a total nightmare. marwaytur You probably haven't even been anywhere but where you are in your life now Blogging on someone else's life but that's OK because the subject here is cell phones in flight and I gave readers an honest view on the inside. Most intelligent people will see my Blog as FYI for them maybe I said something that they didn't know or think of that they will remember on their next flight. So marwaytur sit there in your chair and think of another unintelligent thing to say. It's the same stuff different day. We are in the crew room laughing at your response and I must say a few pilots have made me an offer (in a joking way)but I am married. They were glad to see that I was trying to explain why we need to fight the usage of cell phones in flight. You must be one of the self serving ones. If you are going to put your foot in your mouth again do it fast we have another flight at 5:30. After that we will never see your Blog we'll be in London.
LandonJun 15th 2008 1:27AM
my goodness lynn, you are clearly one of the flight attendants that we all pray are not on our flight, you make out as tho you are spewing your irrelevant bullsh*t for other peoples benefit, because you are so considerate...and then go on to threaten the use of your "yellow paper" which would seem to be the female equivalent of small man syndrome. you're really gonna falsely accuse someone and call the police? please understand that although there are many wonderful flight attendants out there...you aren't one of them, you need pretty much zero qualifications for your job, and pilots do not make you "offers", i also believe you are morbidly obese, probably have upper lip hair, and are a 36 year old virgin...you do very poorly in social settings, and comfort yourself by blogging nonsensically to people you will never meet, you live with cats and i'm thinking even they realize how much you suck at life...i believe all of the above information to be true, so try to bust that myth...
MelissaMar 26th 2008 10:33PM
UM. honestly don't you guys have anything better to do than to fight about all these myths..ya'll are kinda immature and dumb!
Michael WrightMar 29th 2008 8:40PM
It's no myth that there are plenty of JERKS who use their cell phones in the libraries of Norman, Oklahoma, and the so-called "University" of Oklahoma. They are supposedly "banned" in both facilities, but the ban is never enforced. OU president David Boren is on the board of directors of Texas Instruments, the biggest marketer of cell phone chips. Maybe that has something to do with it. The Norman library staff has capitulated to mob rule because they are hoping that voters will approve a huge property tax increase to fund a larger funhouse (mistakenly called a "library.")

Ok, here are the facts about cell phone usage,
1.- The reason for the "All electronic... including cell phones must be turned off at this time"... that the flight attendants are talking about is safety during a take off, if your airplane crashes and you did have a headset with music or one of those "noise canceling headphones" and to make matters worst you did not listened to the safety instructions or even looked at the safety card... after you wet yourself and ask what the @$%... you are probably the one that is going to be on the news the next day.
2.- All airplanes (old and new) have their electronic systems shielded to the point, that the signals from all the available cell phones onboard the airplane are not going to interfiere with any of the navigation devices installed; again Safety was the priority.
3.- There was a time not to long ago that you were able to make phone calls from your cell phone while flying, the cell phone companies made the necessary changes so they put a "cap" on the signals leaving the towers and today if you are in the air at about 1300 ft or above your cell phone is not going to have a signal period. This was done because they could not charge you the roming fees and the long distance fees, since you where calling from up there your local antenna was the next tower and so forth.
4.-If you do not put away your stuff before take off or landing and your airplane crashes, all those nice electronics will become airborne and once they are gone flying usually they will do nasty things to peoples heads, maybe even yours.
5.- There are more, but for now I hope these ones help you with understanding the mysteries, of why "they" want you to do the things that you do not want you to do. I am also an airline pilot and a frequent flyer with background in electronics; So fly safe and enjoy the ride.
DianeJun 11th 2008 4:50PM
I can't comment on why airlines have the regulations they do, but I can say that I've accidentally left my phone on during a flight and received both text messages and calls while in the air. I always keep my phone on vibrate, so I am the only one who noticed when I've received them.
Someone on this blog demanded proof... I can't think of any way to prove it to you unless you were sitting next to me on a flight and I pointed it out to you when a call/text came in. So you may just have to take our word for it that it is possible.
