Wal-Mart's "Green" $199 PC Gets De-Shelved
Last year Wal-Mart tried a little "experiment," selling a low-spec desktop computer for the bargain basement price of just $199. The company thought the price would be enough for customers to overlook the dearth of features and performance, and it apparently was enough for the 600-store allotment made to stores to sell out. However, despite this modest success, the company has decided to stop stocking the boxes in stores.
The gPC from Everex (makers of the similarly cheap Cloudbook laptop) was so cheap partly because it did not ship with a copy of Microsoft's Windows operating system, instead relying on the free Linux OS. This made the machines somewhat unfamiliar to novice computer users, most of whom are familiar with Windows or Apple's Mac OS.
Still, if you don't mind Linux and you're in the market for a bargain desktop, you can still get the supposedly improved gPC2 via the Wal-Mart Web site, still for just $199. However, since the specs of this model are exactly the same of the former gPC, we're not sure why the "2" here is warranted.

I have Linux on one computer, windows on another, and vista on my other. Linux, I have always preferred over windows for so many years. You can go to their website and check it out. Linux is the best thing out there. You probably wont get hacked first of all, the layout and the things it can do is amazeing. So much more stable. People just complained because they never saw it before and dont know how to hook it up. Windows copied linux (and apple) with its designing process. This is a great bargain if you are "experienced". Linux rocks...

Dell is one of the worst computers you can hace!!! We had them where I worked before. It was a brand new system. It was supposed to be state of the art!! We had to have the motherboard replaced 3 times ina year and a half! Then I took this job. These are Dells. They lock up at the drop of a hat! They say it is a server issue- but if you shut them down and restart, they work again for a while! I hate to tell you how many times a day we tell customers, " I'm sorry, but my system is updating and it will be a few minutes." Get an HP-- not Compaq(this one is constantly doing something dumb)- and you won't have any trouble. The HP's we have here at home are great and reliable.

Gateway owned eMachines, til Acer bought both brands a couple of weeks ago. HP owns Compaq. So basically, you have 4 major brands now, Acer, HP, Sony and Dell. And like anything else that is ever manufactured, they all have good ones and bad ones. And everyone has a story to tell about them.

Hate to tell you Bill but just because they have an american address doesnt mean it was MADE HERE! This junk is just even MORE crap from china that people like you are dumb enough to BUY! Keep buying crap from china and they'll keep selling it!

Posters, you can get good used computers from your local computer recycler, if price is a problem. This one cost me $100, have had it fo 18 months, has Win 2000 on it. A checked out Okidta laser printer cost me $25, but I have not picked it up yet. At the laser price, I can just get a different one for the price of one ink cart. Try your locals for low cost, good stuff, establish a rapport with them, and they will even discount stuff for you. They even gave me extra drives if the one installed dailed. They will also call you if they get a good deal

What is ironic is that I believe that owners of old computers running
Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP can install the software they
purchased, along with their old computer, on this new computer so long
as they do not continue to use the Windows software on their old
computer. This is a great idea if you can upgrade to a better
computer and use your old operating system! Provided that you don't
continue to use Windows on your old machine. This way one can
upgrade their hardware!

I think you should save your money and get a computer thats worth something rather than spending $200 on something that will no doubt die on you within the year. I paid over 2k for my alienware laptop but it is definately well worth the money spent. Like they say, you get what you pay for and in the case of that computer, it won't be much.

I have had a Gateway computer since 2003, and it eventually gave up the ghost. Looks like I'm going to haveto replaxw it, since I'm getting runtime errors constantly.

I had an e-machine, and had problems with it. Blew up on me.

"You get what you pay for." If only that phrase were true in today's world. Just because you pay a lot for something doesn't always mean it's the best. I've also observed people tearing up "expensive" computers in a short time by not doing the regular maintenance (i.e. clearing cache, defrag, scandisk, installing regular updates for protection, etc.) Yet there are those who have computers that cost significantly less and have lasted a long time. I'm not a computer expert but if you want something to last, simply take care of it. If you have a question about how to maintain your computer, you'd do good by going to your local Best Buy and asking one of the guys from Geek Squad. Or you can contact your computer's manufacturer (depending on the quality of their customer service). Just my opinion. Hope I didn't step on anyone's toes because that was not my intention. You folks have a nice day.

I've been using computers for many years, when I first started all we had was dos.It was nothing like todays computers,it was slow and tedious.
Today when you purchace a computer you really have no idea of the quality of the parts installed in this computer. The first home computer I owned was twenty years ago.And I built it piece by piece and have done so eversince. You can build a better quality one cheaper if you or you know someone who will help
you put it together. Then you just load your own software. All software is simple, just follow the instructions on the screen.Computer shops charge
nintey dollars to load XP, anyone can load it in less than fourty minutes.Anyone can do it, just follow the instructions.

My Dell computer cost me $1500 dollars. I've had it for 2 years and I've never had any trouble with it. It's true- you get what you pay for.

I think its just a matter of taking care of your computer. Regular cleanings, virus checks, cleaning out spyware etc etc. You can buy the best computer out right now but if you dont care for it. it will become a paper weight in no time.

dekaydence, whats funny is that i actually bought a $200 computer, but not this piece of crap walmart thing. i bought a compaq desktop for $200 at fry's (after rebates) and guess what? i could run vista, had a 160gb SATA 7200rpm hd, 512mb ram, dvd-rw w/ lightscribe. for $45 i bought 2gb ram, $60 for an intel dualcore currently at 2.6GHz per core, for $90 a new EVGA 8500GT graphics card, and for a final $75 a new Antec 500w psu. you count the money and compare it to a $1500 computer and tell me who got the better deal. $1500 =/= $475
