Guy Wins $5.15 Million Jackpot, Other Guy Unplugs Slot Machine
If you've ever been in a serious casino, then you've seen the gigantic slot machines off in the corners (the ones that only accept large-denomination bills). These machines usually have something like spinning cars on top or giant screens showing millions and millions of dollars counting up all the time. Such a machine was precisely the type that Illinois attorney Alvin Paulson put a $20-bill into while on vacation in the Virgin Islands. To his surprise, it lit up and started spitting out quarters -- that is, until a casino worker unplugged it and said it was a malfunction.
The machine was showing a $5.15-million jackpot when Paulson fed his $20 bill in there, an awfully big payout and an awful lot more than the $100 and a free meal that the casino offered him for the supposed malfunction. The casino has yet to offer any proof of said malfunction and Paulson is, naturally, suing the place for either said proof or the $5-million prize.
We wish him the best of luck.

Casinos always play fair...until YOU start winning more than they're getting from you. Mafia stooges..

Just for fun:
To hold 5 million dollars worth of quarters the slot machine would have to be more than 1400 cubic feet in size. About the same as a delivery truck.
If the casino employee had not unplugged the machine the guy would have to stand there for about 9 days to get paid 5 million in quarters.
5 million in quarters would weigh about 1.25 million pounds.
If the guy could have successfully stacked the quarters on top of each other the stack would be more than 40 miles high.
Edge to edge you'd have enough quarters to cover a football field two and a half times.

I am a Surveillance Supervisor at a casino. Where did this story originate? The procedure for any jackpot $100K or over is to call that states Gaming Commission, they then come out. Nothing is allowed to be touched until they arrive and see Surveillance coverage. No machines can be opened or unplugged. What the story says happened is called a reel tilt with a patron dispute, for that amount, again the Gaming Commission is called and they come out to investigate. The Gaming Commission is a separate entity from the casinos. They police the occurrences at casinos, excluding fights and basic police stuff like that. Anyway, if the machine was just unplugged- it wasn't by the casino. It was by the Gaming Commission for the dispute investigation. Another thing too, if it started spitting out quarters (its not like it was going to give him millions in quarters-sheesh), it did not hit a million something dollar jackpot. When that large a jackpot hits, the light on top of the machine(candle)automatically goes on and its registered to a computer and dealt with accordingly. Also, Seeing that this was posted in 2008 and I don't know when the event took place>>> That I know of, all Vegas casinos have whats called Ticket in Ticket out machines (TITOs). So you get a ticket, no quarters fall out any more. So theres more to this story then "A Casino" unplugged his machine.

They are a country of their own, they pay off the elected officials and can do what ever they want. You walk into a casino and it is a third world country run by dictactors. you are lucky to get down the street alive.
Well...Mar 23rd 2008 1:46PM
Well, the machine paying out in quarters...5mil would take a while to spit out 20mil quarters...so i think that it may have been a malfunction. Ive seen the movies and shows where you win like even $200 and those people that work there gotta come check it. So i'm not sayin hes a crook...Im just sayin...Lawyers are well...ya know...

Firstly, this whole story sounds like a hoax to me, for the simple fact that ANY machine that hits a pay that large *in my area, its $1,199 or above* the buttons are inactivated, and a 'Call Attendant' light comes on at the top of the machine. I highly doubt a casino employee would unplug a machine that hit a jackpot that large *or any jackpot, for that matter* for the simple fact that slot attendants WANT people to win, because, at least in my area, they usually receive a tip for paying off the guest after a larger win. Not to mention that, like other people have said before me, the machine has a small computer in it that tells all actions the machine has done, and the security tapes would show anyone, including a casino employee, pulling a plug on a machine.
On a side note, Pondoc, I don't quite know what happened with you at Gold Strike, or when, but they are not owned by Harrah's, but MGM Mirage. I know this for fact, as I work at that exact property as a dealer. Harrah's properties in Tunica are Horseshoe, Grand, and Sheraton.

This is BS. If the machine took $20 bills why was it spitting out quarters? Anytime a jackpot is hit it doesn't pay out of the machine anyway an attendant will come and verify everything and you'll get you payout from the cashiers.

THINK PEOPLE! Casinos DO NOT pay the progressive jackpots. IGT or whoever made the machine pays it. Casinos love these jackpots because of the FREE publicity. This lawyer is out to cheat the casino and you people are too blinded by your bias to see it.
RachelApr 7th 2008 7:45PM
I'm sure they have video evidence from security cameras that the guy could use as proof in court when sueing for the 5 million. that's a lot of money to just throw away because of a 'malfunction'
RichiemacApr 8th 2008 12:17AM
Well if anyone is to get screwed, I'm glad it's a Lawyer. Karma is a bitch isn't it?

Regardless what (Lady & Steve) say this has nothing to do with quarters being spat out, it has to do with the Manager "Unplugging" the machine after the jackpot was won. The lawyer knows damn well that all 5 million isn't going to come out in quarters, so why even post something like that? Slots that still pay this way usually say the " max" amount they will pay out and what you will need to collect from the casino or whatever etc. Mr. Paulson was ripped off by a crooked floor manager who didn't want him to collect his money. He won fair and square and regardless of the number of quarters that dropped this person is entitled to the entire jackpot. Saying a machine is "Malfunctioning" after the bet has been made and when a jackpot is in progress is bullshit especially unplugging it while it's paying off. A machine that is known to "Malfunction" by law must either be unplugged or clearly marked or both otherwise it's "Fraud" and can be considered "the casino cheating" which is also against the law. I wonder if the "security tape" from that time also vanished or had a "malfunction" that prevented it from being used as evidence, why does this story not mention security footage and what it showed? There is way more to this story then is being posted.

This took place in the Virgin Islands not Atlantic City or Las Vegas, and yes many machines will pay out coins along with a massive jackpot, however its usually only a few hundred or so in coins, the remainder must be paid by other sources. A Machine unplugged by anyone during a jackpot payout would be considered "Tampering" but not a "malfunction" since the machine was "tampered" with after the jackpot was in progress. The machine was functioning properly the floor person just didn't want the man to win and so broke the law by unplugging the machine. This person regardless of whether or not he's a lawyer is entitled to the entire jackpot plus, and if it happened to you I bet you would be just as upset.

If that had happened to me I would have gone mental and even though I am not a violent person I think I would probably be in jail now for murder. Only joking! I would ensure that I put this on the internet and name the place to shame them into paying up. I would just go on you tube then search for casinos, gambling, jackpots, slot machines etc. and obviously the most popular searches come up, then I would post the name of casino on top video, and keep doing that until I ran out of places to post on you tube and then go to the next most popular site online. They wouldn`t know what hit them.

Hey, guys it's been a very nice experience to visit here currency trading, i think you are absolutely right, a jackpot can make someone millionaire, the person can't earn that much amount by working as a teacher, doing government job, nor in forex exchange business, nor as an accountant,
It's about the matter of destiny.
SimzeeeJul 26th 2008 10:04AM
If you think that's bad....try working in a casino.
