Report Confirms That 16% of Xbox 360s Are Broken

Finally, a third party has confirmed what many have been saying for a while: Xbox 360 failure rates are much higher than the three to five percent Microsoft claims. Though not quite as high as the 30 percent some retailers have suggested, the 16 percent failure rate reported by SquareTrade is way beyond an acceptable rate.
SquareTrade is an independent warranty provider, covering products after the manufacturers warranty has expired, so its numbers don't include 360s that fail while still under Microsoft warranty. Microsoft recently extended the warranty on Xbox, leading SquareTrade to suggest that the failure rate is actually much higher than 16 percent since customers may have been bypassing its reporting system and going straight to Microsoft.
The infamous Xbox 360 failure has been colloquially called the "Red Ring of Death," because the console displays a red ring upon startup (like the photo above) to let its owner know that it's time to dial Microsoft 911. Causes are unconfirmed, but the most recent reports say that poor component choices in a rush to get the 360 out to market are to blame.
SquareTrade's study tracked 1,040 Xboxes over six to ten months after Microsoft's warranty expired. In that time, 171 claims were filed.

The infamous rings of death debate rages on. I just got an X-360 Arcade from my friend on the cheap since he wanted to upgrade to the Elite since he loves to spend (waste??) money on high tech stuff as soon as it drops. I have yet to experience the joy of having my console fail, but I'm also waiting on him to get the transfer cable so I can get my hands on the hard drive I'm supposed to have.
My one comment to those people who are "forced" to go without a video game for however long it takes to send and recieve the console to/from Microsoft is this. USE THAT TIME TO ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR LIFE! Is it *really* that big a deal to not be able to play a stupid game? If it's not under warranty and you have to pay to get it fixed, sure, that's something to complain about. But to all those gamer junkies who are whining about going through withdrawals that are getting their systems fixed FOR FREE, you really oughta take a good long look at your life and if you're *REALLY LIVING* it!
A broken toy is NOT the end of the world. Didn't we all learn this when we were five???

my husbin had to send back his 360 because of the red lights of doom. This happened in September of 07 we recived it back in October and instead of fixing his they gave him a used system and now if our online goes out he can't play his game he bought that are on the hard drive because its states that the games are not registered to his console. We have called XBOX and the problem was going to take 30 days to fix, guess what it is now Feb of 08 and its still doesn't work. I love my XBOX but they need fix all the problems with there system

People are to critical. Yeah the 360 crashes sometimes and breaks down but at least micro admits it and fixes it. my friend has a ps3 and he put in a new ps2 game(that can be played on ps3) and it caused it to crash and it has not worked right since and sony would not replace it, they basicaly told him it wasnt their problem. And by the way I have a 360 and I play it alot and its a 1st gen and have had no major problems. I think this thing has been blown way out of porportion. and if you don't want to play the badass games that xbox has that no other console even comes close to then go ahead I dont want to hear you complain.

Xbox360s are not crap. About half or more that say that adore Sony. Lol. Anyway, the reason WHY your Xbox360 tears up is probably one of the following (considering that you don't throw it around and disrespect it.): 1. Your laser gave out. This happens when you play ANY DVDs on your Xbox360. It kills the laser and makes it where it can't read the discs. 2. One of your cables are not connected right. If you have either the connection cable or power cord out even just a little bit, it'll do the evil red light. 3. Now, this one I'm not completely sure about...I know it ruins the discs. Moving the system around while you're playing a game. Even just a little might hurt it. Xbox360s are good in my opinion. I've had no problems with my original Xbox360. Got it not too long after they first came out. And overheating? Shoot, I've left mine on for days by accident and could pick up right where I left off. It's the Playstation 3 that has the overheating problems.

If you're so worried about a 360 failing on you then don't buy one. So it gets the red ring of death. Simple buy an extra warranty on it since you already know it has a high rate of failure. So you didn't buy an extended warranty and you have to send it to microsoft for a few weeks. Dear god it's not the end of the world if you can't play a game for like 4 weeks. My 360 has yet to fail me but I'm also not running it 24/7 or leaving it in area where heat can become a problem. Oh and as for a wii. I own that too. Both are great. Although the wii is cool, it hardly has any games that are worth buying. The 360 has amazing graphics and I love the games they release. Oh and yeah don't go out of your way to buy a 360 just for halo 3. That game is totally over rated and boring. Sorry halo fans but get a life, halo is just repetitive online and the story isn't all what it's cracked up to be. If my 360 does get the three rings of death, yeah I'll be annoyed but I knew when I bought the console it has a high rate of failure. If that's too much of an inconvience for your lazy ass, then buy a ps3. Failure or not, I love my xbox 360.

We don't play our XBox360 hardly at all but if our system crashes, it's going out the window and gettig replaced by a PS3. We were kicking ourselves in the butt when we bought the XBox360 because A LOT of the original XBox games don't work on the 360. There also aren't many games for the 360 that look any good. Maybe we should send it packing anyway and just get the PS3?

Ive had my 360 for about 6mos. I waited a good while to buy one in hopes of not purchasing a defective box. I suppose it's paid off as the only issue i have is intermitant freezing. But this only appears to happen when I play Madden for some odd reason. Iv'e never had a DVD or any other game freeze. I suppose my 360 gets tired of getting its ass whooped in football and freezing is its way of communicating poor sportsmanship. Looks like Ill have to bench him for a PS3 since HDDVD is out and Blu Ray is in.

YetiSpaghettiMar 3rd 2008 6:57PM
I had my 360 elite for only 2 weeks before it failed. No red ring,it just froze up and died.4 weeks later they sent me another 360 elite, with "microsoft approved parts" Who knows how old or new these approved parts are? I sure don't.It has functioned almost perfectly for 2 weeks so far now.... If it fails again I will avoid Microsoft like the plague for ever more.

I've never had a single problem with my 360. I've always taken certain precautions with consoles, though, and I've never had a single one go bad. I always put them on a milk crate above floor level, I always sit them level instead of on end, and I make sure their location is reasonably dust free. I kept my launch day PS2 until last year when I upgraded to the slim model, I still have my launch day original Xbox, and my launch day 360 is still going strong. Same with my Nintendo 64, NES and SNES, all original launch day consoles. Oh yeah, and my launch day Playstation 1? My kids play with that.
