Traditionalists might balk, but the holiday shopping season is already underway. Skeptical? Head to your local department store and you'll be inundated by Christmas trees and ornaments. Bargain hunters, though, know that the real deals are more than a month away.
Black Friday, traditionally, is when retailers truly slash prices. Early birds can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars off of their holiday bills. Switched.com checked with a few elves, who gave a sneak peek at what you can expect deal-wise this year.
Blu-ray Players and Movies: Blu-ray is shaping up to be the biggest door buster of this year's Black Friday. de Grandpre expects at least one retailer will offer a Blu-ray player for just $49. Look for bargains on Blu-ray films as well, with last year's hit titles (such as "Iron Man") to fall as low as $5.
Laptops: With the proliferation of Netbooks this year, it's never been easier to find affordable portable computing, but Dan de Grandpre, CEO of DealNews.com says it will get even cheaper on Black Friday. Look for well-equipped Netbooks to sell for $199 – and basic 15" laptops to go for as little as $249.
HDTVs (Pretty big): The holidays are typically the best time to buy a new TV – and Black Friday is the time to do it. If you're looking for a normal sized set, you're in luck. Piper Jaffrey analyst Mitch Kaiser says he expects to see 32-inch LCD sets for as low as $299. GottaDeal.com is estimating 37-inch plasma and LCD sets will fall to $399 or less.
HDTVs (Really big): Need something bigger? How about a 46-47 inch LCD set for $599 – a 25 percent savings? Or a 52-inch LCD for $999? Dealnews says you can expect both. Plasma deals will be a little harder to come by, but a 50-inch set should run roughly $899.
HD Camcorders: You've wanted to shoot your child's school play in HD for a while, but haven't been able to spring for the pricey camcorder. This might be the year. Low-end, flash-based 720p models could drop as low as $60 (though you won't be able to zoom with those). Expect a high quality 1080p HD camcorder for $349.
GPS: While navigation systems have dramatically expanded their reach this year – even making it onto the iPhone – there's still a market for car-based systems. Dealnews predicts you'll be able to find a no-name entry-level system for $49, while a Garmin or Tom-Tom brand will be as low as $69.
Digital Picture Frames: Showcasing your digital pictures consistently gets cheaper. This year, skip the 7-inch screens and focus on the 8- or 9-inch ones, which should be available on Black Friday for as little as $30.
Monitors: Computer monitors might not be the sexiest of gifts, but they're usually welcomed with open arms – and they'll be cheap this year. Name brand 22-inch LCD models may go for as low as $99, while 24-inch models will drop below $150.
Memory: Don't know anyone who needs a monitor? External hard drives are always popular, since they're an easy way to back-up data. Dealnews expects a 1TB drive to fall as low as $49 this year. Gottadeal is looking for 8GB flash drives to hit $15.

I bought a Windows Vista about 3 months ago, and had I know more about this computer before, I would never have bought it...they are JUNK!! You are limited to programs and some you can't even use. I don't recommend this computer to anyone!!

Lynne, maybe you haven't thought about this, but not everybody likes going into the operating system and changing the code. maybe some people like to turn on their computer, play a few games, surf the web, watch a movie and be happy. i have vista ultimate and i haven't had any problems with it yet. so if you want to hack computers and change the operating system to how you like, you are more than free to toss the operating system and upload linux or apple OS X. or better yet, make your own so that way it will be just the way you like it and want it. and if your OS is better than microsoft, the publish that baby and make a little money off it it.

Go Open-Source! Stop sending Microsoft (and others) your money when there is better for FREE!!! Need Microsoft Office? Get OpenOffice.org for free! Need Photoshop? gimp-win.sourceforge.net to get gimp2. Need an operating system? Go Linux! All open source! All free for everyone! Die Microsoft!

Jason, is there a free version of MSWord I can add? This Vista system only has Works included and I cannot send any documents using that as an attachment because no one I know has that form of Works in their computer to open it. I really miss Word and would love to get it for Vista. . .

had an xp machine--died--toshiba replaced it but with vista--contractors software will not work without $500 worth of patches--vista still has problems operating even without these programs--why should I have to buy patches if xp is not available without an extensive search

Hmm, why am I not surprised?
Seems every time M$ updates the OS it breaks something.
But this one could get them in a major pile of trouble. By breaking security programs, this would leave users that ran the update open for attack by all the malware out there and M$ open for legal action if anyone loses data or gets hacked or 'bugged' after they ran the update.
I'm SO glad my OS comes from SCal, not Redmond WA

Lynne, I had the same problem with Windows Vista, boy did Microsoft really screw up with Vista. I was fortunate, however, to send my computer back, and get another with XP, plus credit for the Vista Computer. Windows Vista SUCKS !!!

I bought a Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and since I got it I had nothing but problems. The system crashes all the time. It is worthless.
I still using my 7 years old Windows 2000 Professional and is great. I complaint to DELL, but they can't fix it either. Is garbage

Whew! I too, not long ago, purchased a new laptop with Windows Vista and it was nothing but misery and more misery for me. Took that baby back and was thrilled to dump that lemon. I am now a very happy owner of an Apple Mac. I just love how my Mac works for me:)

If I'm not mistaken... Microsoft seems to be headed back into a major, major anti-trust monopoly position... I for one hope that it will include a class action.

I've had windows vista for about 5 months and no complaints here. I prefer it to XP but I can see i'm in the minority there. I dont mind a couple incompatibilities for the sake of progress.

Sean,
I agree with you totally. I have run two PC's with both Vista Basic(UGH!!)and Vista Home Premium(YEAH!!!!HUZZAH!!)and have had some problems. I had more problems with Windows 98 when it came out than with Vista. Yes, I have had to find alternatives to some but not all third party apps or updates to these. I have not downloaded SP1 yet. Also, I run the home version of Avast and CCleaner along with the built-in Windows Defender and have NO problems. This PC is a Dell Inspiron 531 with no bugs.
For those people who are having issues I can empathize. Vista Basic is like being alone on your birthday, not very fun. The bugs and stripped down apps are really just a nuisance.
I am a PC tech and have worked on many XP,WIN2000, and WIN98 machines, but only one Vista! My brothers, he was using a bad mouse. Drove me nuts for a while. No Vista problems.

Where do I sign up for the class action lawsuit for people who bought Vista to go on their XP systems. I did everything by the book and could not get it to install correctly. Now I am stuck with a copy that I can't return because it was opened.

Mark, I think you can dis-agree with the license agreement and return the product for credit either to the place of purchase or contact microsoft directly. 866-234-6020

I haven't really had too many problems with Vista aka Longhorn. We bought our first laptop a year ago with Vista, no problems, and now just bought another in October with no problems. I found it easy to search through programs, and find what you are looking for. I have found that the compatibility wizard works for most programs that have resistance to Vista.
With learning Vista, I found that I really like it.

Do you know that via Vista, Microsoft, RIAA, and the FBI can openly check your computers for illegal copies of music, movies, software, any copied music CD's/DVD's/Blue-Ray's which you insert into the computer drive. How do you like them apples?!

You can change your Works to save in Word 97/2003 mode. When you do a save as choose use the drop down box to change what format the document saves in. Just a thought : )

After seeing Vista in action on my friends notebook, speaking with a few vista users, doing other research i have found none of these horror stories(very sorry to hear) have been true from what ive seen and researched. I ran a AML free registry checker on my friends notebook and the backup option didnt work, but it immediately ran it in compatibility mode and worked fine. a fellow classmate says his is fine and doesnt know what the big deal is. ive heard u need 3 gigs of ddr2 ram for it to be fine, and he has 2gigs of ddr2. other reviews on notebooks with vista with 3 gigs of ddr2 were great. in my opinion xp is great and 2000 is equally the same too.(Microf**k no longer supports 2000 thou)
