Tennessee To Ban Texting While Driving

Americans are adept at adopting new technology, and texting (sending a text message via a cell phone) is one of the new tools that has been easily learned and utilized among a population that seems driven to constant communication -- and in many cases, driven to distraction.
Take the rise in incidents in which someone writing or reading a text message while driving ends up causing an automobile accident. Several states have enacted or are considering laws to ban texting while driving. Add now Tennessee to the list of places where fumbling with a digital device while driving may soon be illegal, following a trend that is picking up speed around the country.
New Jersey and Washington State already ban the activity and the proposed Tennessee law would slap offenders with a $50 fine plus a $10 court cost. The Tennessee state senate transportation committee has already had a hearing on the bill, introduced by Republican state senator Jim Tracy. The state House has not yet scheduled hearings as the Senate won't be voting for at least another two weeks.

I dunno, but this move is kind of like "DUUUUHHHHH" if you're stupid enough to think you're adept enough at texting to risk people's lives at the same time, then you should be incarcerated, not fined. I kind of just feel like wow, this law should go without saying. It's like having a law that tells you that you can't smoke in the maternity ward of a hospital. It should be against the law to not have common sense

none of your biz says:
while they are at it, they should ban tail gating to..........they are the worst in TN

Hey watch what you said a************.I'm from TN and you other people dont f****** start because I have seen men on phones as well!

Most (all?) states already have laws that cover "innatentive driving" or "reckless driving". Why not enforce the laws we already have? Or the insurance companies could reduce coverage if a cell phone was in use during an accident. If people were hit with a $1,000 deductible, they would be a lot more careful.

Technology these days are years ahead of the the laws to,'make us safer.' And always harder to
enact and enforce those laws, cause their late.
But they will eventually, just as people are really getting to know their high-tech gizmos.
I saw a guy eating a bowl of cereal one morning.

I don't know what's worse, that people actually text while they're driving, or that so many people do it a state had to pass a law banning it. Next thing you know, drivers will be busting out their laptops and working on reports while they're cruising at 75-80 mph down the highway.

they should also ban eating while driving, putting on makeup while driving, scrolling thru an ipod while driving, all a problem here in Alaska :)

Good.,it should be outlawed.. people are stupid !
You can text sitting at a light.. you can do it before you go.. after you stop.
The world won't stop if you don't text!
I sell gas.. people do not read the signs at the pumps.. It says do not use your cell phones at the pumps , it may cause and explosion! Duh! STatic electric! Women are more suseptable than men.. but it happens.
Then people will come up to the desk to pay.. and still talking, they can't even remember what pump they want the gas put on! They cant do 2 things at once..!
People drive slower in their cars.. impeding traffic! Cause accidents.
Just plain stupid

THIS IS THE BEST IDEA THEY HAVE COME UP WITH I ACTURALLY SAW AN ACCIDENT WHERE A CHILD WAS KILLED BECAUSE THE GIRL DRIVING THE OTHER CAR WAS ON HER CELL PHONE AND NOW THE OTHER FAMILY HAS TO BURY THEIR CHILD . THAT BEING SAID SILVERTHREAD AND BOB ARE IDIOTS THESE TYPE OF LAWS ARE NECCESSARY TO SAVE LIFES .

They will stop me from driving, and speaking on the cell phone.......only after, I wrap my car, around a tree....and they pry it, from my, cold dead hand!!!
Hence, the irony!!!

I have found one way to prevent text messaging and loud chatter on a cell phone when I travel. You can buy a cell phone jammer for $199 which does an excellent job on all cell phone bands. Many restaurants and theatres use them in Europe. When you are driving and see someone talking or typing, just press a button on the jammers case and right away, they can no longer use their phone as long as the jammer is on.

thank god someone has the nuts to ban these ignorant drivers with the cell phones, i would rather ride with a 99 year old with 1 hand and 1 leg than to drive with a cell phone driver, lets hope every state in the country bans the cell phones while driving, they are a major crash waiting to happen, its usually these ignorant teens that think they know it all, but when i see a cell driver i flip them the finger regardless of who it is
edFeb 24th 2008 8:09PM
I never text while driving. The first time I try doing that while speeding in and out of traffic talking on the other line and checking my emails on my laptop I'll probably have a problem on the highway.
BarbaraFeb 24th 2008 8:45PM
It's about time they started making laws not only about texting but even talking on cell phones while driving. One's attention should be 100% commited to the task of driving. There is too much to keep your mind on without thinking about anything else. If one must talk while in their vehicle, it should be a law nationwide that they must be parked off the roadway.

I'm sure the families of people killed by someone texting while driving, wouldn't say this is a nonsense law.
BillieFeb 24th 2008 11:32PM

What I would like to know is where are the statistics on accidents caused by eating fast food while driving; spilling a drink or cup of coffee in your lap while driving; brushing your hair while driving; dropping a lit cigarette in your lap while driving. I think all these things would show up perhaps as much as cell phone use as causes of accidents.
I personally find dropping the guts of a burrito in my lap or spilling coffee on me much more distracting than talking on the phone. Are they going to ban fast food? Eating and drinking while driving as well? You can't legislate against stupidity. That said I, personally, seldom dial my phone while driving...often don't answer if I'm in a heavy traffic situation. It's called common sense.
Teen drivers should under no circumstances be allowed any cell phone useage while driving. Teen cell phones should have no capabilities other than calling. And calls should be limited to 911, home number, mom's and dad's cell or work numbers...that's it. Til then teens caught using a cell device while driving should have license revoked til they are 21 and parents should be charged a HEFTY fine and be civily and criminally liable for any accident that occurs while their teen is using a cell phone. Make it expensive and costly enough for parents and their teens and you will see teen accidents caused by cell useage take a huge nose dive. 'nuff said.

i think this is the most outragous law i have seen in a long time. This is the one of the first in the many steps towards communism. This is how it starts, first they say "its for your own benefit" and then they say "its for the benefit of the community". Next thing you know they are telling you what days you can go shopping and what job you can have and deciding what hobbies you are aloud to have, and all because its for "your own benefit". BIg Brother government is the code name for communism. Wake up people what "rights" will they ban next...
