Best Laptops Under $500

The Windows One: Acer Aspire 5315
Acer's full-fledged Vista-enabled mainstream laptop may not be the fastest, sturdiest, or prettiest, but it'll certainly do when you absolutely, positively have to have Windows for less than $500.
Who it's for: Students on a budget who still need Windows-compatible software (such as PowerPoint and Word for class preparation); parents and grandparents who don't want to do much more than word-process, balance the checkbook, or surf the Web.
What we like: The huge 15.4-inch LCD screen is great for movie-watching and slideshows, and the built-in stereo speakers are surprisingly powerful (considering they're made of plastic!). Sure, it's 6.2-pounds -- more than twice as heavy as the MacBook Air -- but that's not as heavy as we expected at this price point. It has three USB ports, which is generous. The keyboard is spacious and comfortable to type on, and includes a one-touch key for wireless and battery management, and a Wi-Fi on/off button. Most other laptops in this price category don't have a DVD/CD-RW drive, so music rippers and DVD watchers will be pleased that the Acer Aspire does have one.
What we don't: With no dual-core processor (just a Celeron 450) and 1-gigabyte of DDR2, this baby can be slow to start and a bit lethargic when running several programs at once. Battery life – at just over two hours – can leave you stranded at the Internet café if you're not near a power outlet. Plus, the plastic casing feels a bit cheap.
Verdict: It does the trick for $500, but if you have an extra couple of Benjamins, go for the Aspire 4710, or any laptop with a dual-core processor.
Cost: $500 (the version we tested out was available exclusively at Wal-Mart for $470, but you can search around online for similar deals).

guys dont buy acer. i went to 3 different stores and the salespeople were kind enough to tell to purchase another brand. cos people who bought it are still waiting for refund or exchange and since i was going to school it would be best to purchase something else.

Paul - the serial number is not on the laptop. My sister bought an Acer and we looked everywhere, even in the book, for the SN and finally found it on the end of the box it was shipped in. Hope this helps.

Acer is made by Gateway now, Acer is considered to be an economy computer. Also know that all the new PCs that have vista on them will run slow if they only have 1GB RAM. That is the minimum that vista takes to function. So if you are trying to run other things at the same time I hope ya have time on your hands!

You get what you pay for.....

I understand why commercial users buy PCs (the machines are cheaper and they have people that they pay to keep them running) but I cannot understand why the average person would buy one for his/her own at home use.
Spend a few hundred more and get an Apple machine... I am 85 years old and have run Apples for 15 years... I just don't have problems with them.
I now have an Apple G5 Desktop and and Apple G4 laptop... Both running Tiger... Haven't upgraded to Leopard yet... Reason is, the Tiger OS runs so good... Leopard may come eventually.
Running and Apple will save you enough on virus programs to pay the extra cost of an Apple... Get a REAL computer and you will love it.

I would NOT buy another Acer. I had problems with the cord and then the point at which it connects. Sent it to Acer (at my expense)...waited, got it back...SAME PROBLEM. They claimed to have replaced the keyboard and motherboard. By this point it was nearing the end of warranty. Sent it back and it arrived with the SAME PROBLEM. No one local had anything good to say about them.

My first desk top was a Acer, great computer foir that time in computer life. I am very sorry that so many of you are having so much trouble with the Acer Laptops. I was like some of the other people on these post, getting ready to buy one as well, but after reading all the bad stuff about all that is going on.
I think I will save my penny's and get a better brand, I think Acer better read all these post and get on the stick about better repairs or getting new laptop's to all the people that are having so much trouble. If they don't do something and do it soon they will not have a business to do anything with. I know they say well we are a big company, well my friends at Acer, you need to look at big companys that have gone out of business and they don't understand why, well, NO SALE's, that is why.

Sorry but I prefer HP or compaq over dell, gateway a cow in a box and acer say what. I never have had a problem with HP or compaq at all very dependable. Also I do have had a toshiba satelite which has not been bad at all either but I guess most of time Higher end merchandise such as computers are better.

I think Marty and his wife Kane are two of the most miserable people I have ever met in my life. He is condescending and she is rude and between both they are the "Owners" of the city and think he should be up for election every four years not a appointment for 10 years or life it seems. He also takes the word of the police every time like they are God. In his case he thinks he is the be the be all end all if the city. BTW if ppl knew what he did in the and present things would be thrown out of office.
