Study Finds One-In-Four Cell Phone Calls Suck
While we were never big fans of Verizon Wireless's "Can you hear me now?" commercials, we found that the TV spots did sum up many of the frustrations many cell phone users at the time were having with their carriers: Poor signals and even poorer call quality. In the few months since we last saw one of those ads, our marvelous advances in technology have solved all concerns regarding call quality, right? Not really, apparently, since a recent study from Ditech has found that 23% of all cell phone calls do not meet industry standards for quality.
Interestingly, though, the carriers themselves weren't necessarily to blame for the poor quality. Instead, the phones were the culprits. The leading reasons for poor call quality were ambient noise and echo, both caused by handsets unable to separate callers voices from other outside noises.
Carriers are still ultimately the ones who should take the blame for the poor quality, though. They are, after all, the ones who push cheap or free phones with poor internal components on their subscribers.

I work for AT&T and I'll throw myself under the bus for a moment.
I love how this article talks about how the carriers sell 'cheap and sub par devices' ...yet the first thing a person asks for when they come into the store is which phone is free.
I tell everyone who comes in to the store that they get what they pay for. If you take the free phone, you'll most likely be back complaining about it in a week. Do you go into Best Buy asking for free tv's or free digital cameras? No. they'd laugh you out of the store. And the carrier owes you nothing. You pay your bill every month to get minutes. It's an exchange of money for goods and services. Don't b*tch when you don't get a discount.

I also agree that it is the phones...but to take it to another level, my Nokia sucked when it came to Sprint service. My husband has an 8 yr old Sanyo brick style phone that NEVER drops calls etc. Sanyo specifically makes phones for Sprint..so we changed my Nokia for a Sanyo flip phone. I couldnt get the brick style phone I wanted b/c they stopped making it. I dont drop calls as long as I am in ROAM (which we get for free) and as someone else said I dont have service in Central Florida near Disney. However, that being said, my husband was sitting in the car next to me talking on his phone and Im looking at mine (on the same service contract) going I have no service...and hes talking on his. Go figure...and they wonder why he wont give up his phone.

its not just the phones, but the service, too. at&t was what i had, and they were pretty good(nokia phone-simple). then, they bankrupt leaving me to Suncom. suncom started out alright with signal good, i had to get new phone(75.00). tired of having to get new phone for every new carrier, esp. when not my fault to change. then a few months in, their signal dropped everywhere i was. this lasted me in hell for a long while. then at&t returned, so i paid alot to drop suncom and switch to at&t. they had deal for SYNC and reasonable service plan, and signal was in places i prayed to have it for years. then, again, a few months after LURING me into a contract, they dropped calls every other, esp. ones with my grandmother(50 with her), and home (60 there), and alot of refusing to send calls, esp. when i called my work, so could not show them i called when needed. on top of that, signal dropped in all the places i finally got. it seems they lure you in, keep you happy for a while, then stop boosting to save them money and they have you for 2 years on crappy service without a care. then, as if treating me like dirt offline, they now OPENLY admit to using your identity online at their site to give third party goers a glimpse of you, and show them what else you do while online(sears did this too). lets give heads of cell companies and others very poor signal so when they have to make calls, theirs suck too, and they appreciate the art of doing the job right, the first time and EVERY TIME. if phones are bad, stop making them. if towers can be manipulated, then stop doing that and play fair and honest, god knows we make you rich enough! stop using our identity for third party gain and demolition. JUST DROP YOURSELF, for starters!

I worked for AirTouch/Verizon from '93 to '96, and Sprint from '96 to 2002... Sprint is by far the best technically. The management sucks, however, but the service beats them all.

AT&T is the worst of them all. I call them frequently about it, and they always act surprised. I can't wait for my contract to be up so I can get the hell away from them.

I have had Verizon for years. I have had several phones of different models in that time and I have only lost service once (In a place they had no towers at all) and had two drop calls. Pretty damn good service if you ask me.

I had a Verizon pre-pay for YEARS and it worked better than most providers. Recently my son and I got a verizon plan and it still works the best. My husband has Nextex, and my daughter Sprint both which drop calls constantly. GO VERIZON!

Verizon has ALWAYS "sucked" as you put it. And it isn't only their cell phones........ it's their land lines, their DSL "high speed", and their affiliate DirecTV.......... I'm incredibly sorry I tried them, and equally as ecstatic that I dropped them and went to Comcast. Do yourself a favor folks......... DON'T use Verizon. By the way, reference to a post earlier..... I've had an AT&T cell phone for about 12 years, and I've NEVER had a dropped call.

Verizon is by far the best with the best customer sevice as well! Only time I had a problem was with a bad razor phone!

I've used Nextel/Sprint for around 9 years. Never once have I had a "dropped call". Used several different brand phones over the years, too, so I know it's the service. I'll never change!

Joy, did Sprint pay you to say that?? I have had Sprint since 2001. Got the phones only because my daughter was going off to college, 200 miles away, and wanted a way for her to be able to contact me if ever an emergency, not just at school, but along that 200 mile drive, mostly 2 lane highways, between school and home.
If you want my opinion, Sprint SUCKS!!! You stated that you have NEVER had a dropped call, well, if that's true, you are one of the "lucky ones" We get more dropped calls than my husband, who has a Cingular, now At&t. Why don't I change service? Two reasons, the first and most important one is that my now college graduated daughter has her number one all of her resume's, the other reason is that back in 2001 when I got the phones, I got a decent plan, 1500 minutes, with "vision" unlimited internet and unlimited texting, etc. Well you can't get that kind of plan today unless you pay 15.00 per month per phone for internet, and then you add 15.00 per month per phone for texting! Your talking 60 bucks! I think not!
Of course Sprint will credit you one full minute for a dropped call, but you have to immediately call them, report the dropped call, THEN you can recall whoever you were talking to when you dropped. Ok, thats still not too bad, UNLESS the call is dropped repeatedly, think about that! You spend more time making the reports than anything!
Dropped calls are not the only issue, let's talk about calls coming into your phone that you don't actually receive. My son was forever getting in trouble with my for not answering his phone when I would call him, he would always go on the defense stating that his phone didn't ring. He is 15, so ok, sure it didn't ring, uh huh, tell me more about this "bridge" you want to sell me! Well, he was telling the truth.
And before anyone gets started on "service location" theory, stop, because been there done that, doesn't wash. We have "tested" that little theory several times, and places and it just doesn't wash.
Anyway, sorry to vent on here, just frustrated with how the cell companies are getting away with robbery, charging for everything, as much as they want because they can, just be careful because the next time you sneeze, you just might find a "new" charge on your next billing cycle!

I have been with At&t for almost 4 years, and I never had a problem with it.I think they have the best wireless service there is.Now,I can't say that about Sprint.
