HarperCollins Offering Free Books Online

Books such as 'Mission: Cook! My Life, My Recipes and Making the Impossible Easy' by Food Network star Robert Irvine, 'I Dream in Blue: Life, Death and the New York Giants' by Roger Director, and 'The Undecided Voter's Guide to the Next President: Who the Candidates Are, Where They Come from and How You Can Choose' by Mark Halperin are available in their entirety for perusal on the HarperCollins Web site.
Books available through the Browse Inside program will only be available for one month and will not be downloadable for offline viewing or printing.
It seems that this experiment would work best for reference books (like the aforementioned cookbook) with lots of pictures and big type, since reading novels and the like on a typical computer screen can be irritating to the eyes and plenty tiring.

I think it's sad that a top publisher like Harper-Collins must give away what they pay so much to obtain. If a book has wide appeal and true value, then the book would sell with little prompting. It just goes to show you that the public is tired of opinion! Where are the people who are actually doing something noteworthy? I'm the Democratic Karl Rove and both sides of the political isle are laughing at me. Harper Collins should be breaking my door down to publish my story. How many people can claim to impeaching a President, winning two controversial elections, sending Elian home, and having the goods on a corrupt administration engaged in endless war while spying domestically? That sounds like a book that would sell if it's true. Somebody unknown must be giving the Democrats advice in private because publicly they don't seem to have a clue.

Baen Publishing has been doing this for a few years. In fact, in a few hardcovers, they've included CDs containing dozens of books.
They haven't lost money and only gained more readers.
