Woman Fined $2,000 For Losing Cable Boxes -- to a Tornado
For cable subscribers, it's often only a few bucks a month extra to get the company's standard DVR, giving access to a "digital" tier of channels and the ability to record them on a rented, Tivo-like device at a fraction of the cost. That the device is being rented is an important point to remember, a point that was driven home to Ann Beam, a Wheatland, Wisconsin woman who received a bill for $2,025.45 when she failed to return five cable boxes and their remotes. The problem was she couldn't return the boxes because they, along with most of the rest of her house, were destroyed during a tornado strike on January 7. She called the cable company and was told she was still responsible and would have to get reimbursed by her insurance company. However, it seems Time Warner Cable is relenting, perhaps due to some negative PR, and is saying that the charge will be removed from Beam's account, along with the other customers who ran into the same problem.
So, it seems all is well in the end in this case, but if you have equipment from your cable provider in your home, keep in mind that you may be held responsible for it if your cable provider isn't quite so charitable next time disaster stries.

ldyrebellion: Seriously, get to know the English language, BEFORE you start writing on the blogs; that includes PUNCTUATION AND GRAMMAR. It really, really makes you look like a complete dumb ass.
As far as the cable company goes, yes they are greedy bastards. HOWEVER, I am sure they want their stuff back. Claim it as a loss on your homeowner's insurance, give them what is rightfully theirs and be done with it. YOU would want YOUR STUFF back!!

you can complain all you want..but if you dont come up with a solution that satisfies both of you it will show up on your credit report, and unless you live like trailer trash..that report hurts you. Your cost of car insurance is a result of your credit score.

I leased through a realty company who had a legal responsibility to provide a safe enviroment to reside in, as per state law.
In this instance, the owner of the home is required to carry rental insurance on the property.
The commentary posted about renters and the implication that renters are less than responsible is pure rubbish and snobbery.
Due to the poor attitude of CableOne and thier request for immediate payment, I made sure that they were the last bill to receive payment from me.
Big freakin deal if they made a late payment for boxes on my credit report.
The rest of my credit history is spotless.
If any company inquires they will also receive a letter of explanation, written by me, attached.
Companies like CableOne give themselves a bad reputation by being asinine enough to dare include such trivial negative crap in a credit report.
I know from experience that once the file is read by a human being, there is much discussion on the idiocy of it all, after which, it is disregarded.
CableOne will never get another dime of my money and subsequently lost 6 other accounts as equally disgusted friends and family canceled and switched to satellite.
Cable and Insurance are two industries that I think need tight regulation restrictions.
!! CableOne sucks !!

To you people whining about the poor cable company...I own a business. They didn't lose a dime. They took it off their taxes as a loss. The more disturbing question is the amount of people who have no empathy for a woman who just lost her home and everything in it.

I work for an insurance company. Homeowers coverage does not provide coverage for someone else's property (the cable company) Quite likely the cable company had insurance on their cable boxes for an event such as this. They sent a bill in hopes to get money from the renter to avoid having to file a claim for their own insurance company. They wrote it off because as the 'insurable interest' they can file a claim with their insurance company to recoop their lost assests (less depreciation of course.
