Traditionalists might balk, but the holiday shopping season is already underway. Skeptical? Head to your local department store and you'll be inundated by Christmas trees and ornaments. Bargain hunters, though, know that the real deals are more than a month away.
Black Friday, traditionally, is when retailers truly slash prices. Early birds can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars off of their holiday bills. Switched.com checked with a few elves, who gave a sneak peek at what you can expect deal-wise this year.
Blu-ray Players and Movies: Blu-ray is shaping up to be the biggest door buster of this year's Black Friday. de Grandpre expects at least one retailer will offer a Blu-ray player for just $49. Look for bargains on Blu-ray films as well, with last year's hit titles (such as "Iron Man") to fall as low as $5.
Laptops: With the proliferation of Netbooks this year, it's never been easier to find affordable portable computing, but Dan de Grandpre, CEO of DealNews.com says it will get even cheaper on Black Friday. Look for well-equipped Netbooks to sell for $199 – and basic 15" laptops to go for as little as $249.
HDTVs (Pretty big): The holidays are typically the best time to buy a new TV – and Black Friday is the time to do it. If you're looking for a normal sized set, you're in luck. Piper Jaffrey analyst Mitch Kaiser says he expects to see 32-inch LCD sets for as low as $299. GottaDeal.com is estimating 37-inch plasma and LCD sets will fall to $399 or less.
HDTVs (Really big): Need something bigger? How about a 46-47 inch LCD set for $599 – a 25 percent savings? Or a 52-inch LCD for $999? Dealnews says you can expect both. Plasma deals will be a little harder to come by, but a 50-inch set should run roughly $899.
HD Camcorders: You've wanted to shoot your child's school play in HD for a while, but haven't been able to spring for the pricey camcorder. This might be the year. Low-end, flash-based 720p models could drop as low as $60 (though you won't be able to zoom with those). Expect a high quality 1080p HD camcorder for $349.
GPS: While navigation systems have dramatically expanded their reach this year – even making it onto the iPhone – there's still a market for car-based systems. Dealnews predicts you'll be able to find a no-name entry-level system for $49, while a Garmin or Tom-Tom brand will be as low as $69.
Digital Picture Frames: Showcasing your digital pictures consistently gets cheaper. This year, skip the 7-inch screens and focus on the 8- or 9-inch ones, which should be available on Black Friday for as little as $30.
Monitors: Computer monitors might not be the sexiest of gifts, but they're usually welcomed with open arms – and they'll be cheap this year. Name brand 22-inch LCD models may go for as low as $99, while 24-inch models will drop below $150.
Memory: Don't know anyone who needs a monitor? External hard drives are always popular, since they're an easy way to back-up data. Dealnews expects a 1TB drive to fall as low as $49 this year. Gottadeal is looking for 8GB flash drives to hit $15.

This remark is absurd and offensive yet it does say something about this race. "Hope" is not the only emotion underlying this race. "Hate" is a driving factor as well. When I look at our candidates in the democratic primaries I think it is just as important to see which candidate brings out the most hate in people, as well as hope. The truth is Barack brings people hope, while Clinton brings assurance. Also, opponents will deal with Barack, while many of Hillary's opponents will hate her. This was the deciding factor for me when I decided to back Obama. If you have preached liberal ideas in your life and ever wished to see the UNITED in United States of America, you should support Barack.

Oh really? Barack can unite this country? Pray tell, why? When has he united anyone behind anything? He certainly didn't manage to unite this country against the war in Iraq back then even though he supposedly believed so strongly against it. He hasn't united the senate behind sending forces to Afghanistan even though he's been head of the commitee since the beginning of 2007. In fact, he's never led any sort of legislation in the senate, merely tagged along. Now, to me, that seems like following, not uniting.
Besides, what makes you think anyone will unite behind him come fall? 20 percent of Hillary Rodham Clinton's voters say that they'd rather vote fo McCain. And I can see why. He's a true straight-talker and has the the old battle scars and is a better man for it.

He should be investigated, sentenced and thrown in jail. How does one know whether or not he truly meant it or not?

Obama is NOT Muslim but read about the so-called Christian church he belongs to. It's totally racist.
In "Dreams Of My Father", the book that Obama wrote in 1995, you will find the name of his church, (On October 18, 1992, Michelle and Barack's wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois. Source: Dreams From My Father, page 401) and here's an article relating to the church. It's totally racist. You can check the website for the church as well, though a part of the Mission Statement has been changed, before it did in fact state "disavowal of the pursuit of middleclassness" and that portion has been deleted.

He should be investigated, sentenced and bought an ice cream cone for his childish but utterly true statements. How does one know whether or not to order the vanila or the strawberry? Hillary knows the truth about herself do you wonder if she bent it or not? I was wondering if anyone knows if it is true, but I heard that after she loses the Presidential race, Hillary was going to become the new spokesman for snap on tools? Could that be right?

Interesting, Susan, all the sites to which you point us are maintained by the Obama campaign. Do you think that there may be some bias in the representation??

I am not voting for Obama. Three years ago this guy was a STATE SENATOR, who 139 times voted present on controversial bills, and 6 times accidentally voted the "wrong way"

Comments like that are uncalled for whether they are meant to be sarcastic or not. I personally like Hillary and feel as though we are making a mistake if we don't elect her but I am just one person. I think her experience and Obama's lack of speaks for itself. So....next time keep comments like that to yourself

Obama's people cry foul at everything and called it racism but why haven't I heard a public outcry for this? This is just wrong. I don't care what your political convictions are but murder is not an acceptable solution, nor is calling for someone's death. Yes, most of the country may hate Bush but it's not like we'd actually say he should die. Just get impeached. There's a difference between political disagreement and actual murderous intention. Big thick line that he just crossed. Idiot.
