Afraid of Losing Job, Florida Woman Deletes Office Files Worth $2.5 Million
People can get awfully paranoid when it comes to their jobs. Some people can't help but think that everyone is out to get them, which seems to be the case for Marie Cooley of Jacksonville, Florida. Cooley is currently in jail after confessing to deleting files worth an estimated $2.5 million at her former employer, all because she thought she was about to get fired. As it turns out, she wasn't getting the boot, but we're not entirely sure she's the one with the most questionable judgment in this story.
It turns out that Cooley saw an ad in the classifieds for a job that sounded a lot like hers posted by her current employer, Steven E. Hutchins Architects, also in Jacksonville. She got angry, went in to work, and deleted all the company's work from its servers. She cleaned out seven years' worth of designs and drawings, designs the owner of the company estimated were worth $2.5 million. Cooley confessed to what is a second degree felony, potentially punishable by a five-year sentence.
She obviously wasn't quite right in the head when doing this, but we're inclined to think that the owner of the business isn't all there either. Despite estimating the worth of the company's files at $2.5 million, the architecture firm had no backup systems in place. That's a recipe for disaster regardless of the sanity of your employees. Even the local Sheriff's office knows better than that, issuing the following statement:
The lesson to be learned here is that you can't depend on having just one set of records or files and having your employees have access to them. You've got to have some kind of backup.Thankfully the files were able to be recovered, but backups of important files are not something you should take lightly. These days, backups are easy to implement, regardless of what kind of computing you do. On the Mac, OSX 10.5 Leopard includes the Time Machine functionality which, when stored on an external USB drive, makes backing up easy. On Windows you can copy your important stuff to an external drive yourself or invest in a Windows Home Server box to automatically and securely back up your stuff daily.
Oh, and that job posting that sent Cooley off? Turns out it was for another company run by the boss's wife. Go figure.

In times as these, employers need to be people-understanding. Was it that the employer was not being upfront, honest, or had he shown reason for causing distrust? There is usually and underlying reason that would cause someone to do something as extreme as this.I remember that many years ago, close to 50, my ex-husband had just come back from Vietnam and he was hired by a toy distribution company. They had another employee at equal level as my ex, however he was very jealous of my ex because the sales people that came to the company would rather deal with my ex than with him. When they brought gifts and complimentary items, i.e., fine wine, etc.they would give him to my ex. Reason was that the other employee was not very nice and also related to the owner of the company. He thought that my husband should do all the inventory, stocking and work and he should just stab my ex on the back. He lied to the boss and the boss terminated my ex...after my ex had worked extremely hard and fast to get the company in order. ...Needless to say, my ex , who was very organized, had made a chart and had info. of every last item. When fired, he destroyed the work of his notes he had made for himself whereas the other employee had no concept of nothing. Very shortly thereafter, the company went down the drain. When company owners aren't smart enough to know that some relatives should not be hired, they learn tough lessons. My ex, had put all his heart and soul into the job thinking that the owner was appreciative of his work. May those who have good employees read this and learn. ...This may not be the case, but....a word to those who should be Wise!

Duh, she thought her job was being farmed out.
Cut her a break.

hahahaha. Too bad they were retrievable. I did the same thing to my former employer, but he thought it was a system crash. It was...MY crash.
Ass hat.

Hey John, the Jacksonville area is flat as a board. Hillbillies live in mountainous country. Leave it to an idiotic carpetbagger yankee like you to be too stupid to be able to differentiate between flat and mountainous.

Whatever happened to integrity? I doubt seriously that the company is totally innocent either. This country has lost it's respect for anything but money. This woman did what thousands of other people would do given the opportunity..........it is so disappointing seeing how low we have sunk.

She deserves the punishment she is going to receive. Yet, when the Bush administration and the CIA lose invaluable documents nothing happens to them. There is no justice in this country. Not since Watergate have we seen such an administration so lacking in honesty and trust
worthiness. Its time these scoundrels left office so we could find people of higer moral character.

Five years, where is the justice. I have seen crack heads do a lot worse. Not to mention being violent and getting a lot less time. The only way we are going to stop drugs and most violent crime. Is to put crack heads away permanently. The woman in the office should get a second chance.

Yes.... let her get 5 years for this... and let's have the rapist and murders serve less time...
think about that one!
MarieJan 26th 2008 8:10PM
I HOPE SHE GOES FREE. THERE ARE PEOPLE IN JAIL WHO DESERVE TO BE THERE, LIKE MURDERS, RAPEIST, ETC. THIS WOMAN DELETED A FILE. TOO F_ _ _ _ _ bad!!! Let the company do a little work, maybe it will teach these big companies to stop being so cheap and pay their employee more money, I am glad she deleted the files.
kayJan 26th 2008 8:31PM
Regardless of how she ""felt", (or if the files were recovered or not, or if the boss neglected to protect the files), it was her premeditated malicious intent and her devious ACTIONS that put her in jail!
Dayna, Kat, Al, Apple, Gimer, Warren and all the other people who think it's OK to destroy other peoples property... YOU need to re-think your comments AND seek psychological help before YOU screw your entire life up like Maria did! Destroying other peoples property is a CRIMINAL ACT! DESTRUCTIVE PEOPLE ARE VERY SICK PEOPLE... they are NOT normal, NOT healthy, NOT sane, and NOT funny... YOU ARE SICK for supporting her, so go get help before you mess up your entire life with your twisted thinking!
Marie hurt no one but herself... what did she gain? Do you think she's proud of herself? Look at her photo! She will regret this act the rest of her life! She will be in severe pain and great shame over this stupid destructive act! She will suffer for years and years with guilt & regret! Besides being incarcerated, and locked up behind bars, she will be taunted, teased, tormented, beaten up, molested, raped, and gang banged over & over before her jail term completes her FIRST MONTH! Think about it... really think about the consequences Maria will face for her STUPID actions... then put yourself in her place because those of you who "justify" her acts are on the same twisted road she is!
Your life is a gift... your job is a blessing that enables you to be productive and contruibute something to this world... you should be thankful you are able to work... use your wisdom or you'll end up in the jail cell next to Maria!

First of all...did she think that she had such a totally unique job ? And second...why did she think she was next in line for a pink slip ? What did she do before all this to think she was going to be fired (besides general paranoia). Sounds like she was a totally useless employee in the first place. Nobody has job security...not even the President!

I can't believe someone thinks that you have to write over a file 5 times to completely lose it. Actually once information is written over on a hard drive it is gone forever. You are probably thinking that because a whol file is rarely stored on one part, because it is usually broken up into many fragments one many different sectors which would be difficult to write over all at once.

this is scary to think that a person could think this way, I guess fear may be worse that drugs, sometimes
