Energy-Saving Bulbs Causing Migraine Headaches
Compact fluorescent bulbs, the twisted looking replacement lights that use as little as one fourth the power of their common incandescent counterparts (and last much longer), are being adopted worldwide in an effort to reduce energy consumption. They are even becoming mandatory in some countries -- a little troubling according to the Daily Mail, which reports that health experts in the U.K. say the green bulbs can cause migraine headaches or other disconcerting symptoms in many people. The bulbs work in the same way as the long, traditional fluorescent tube lights seen in many commercial establishments. This means that they can produce light that subtly flickers, unnoticeable by many, but a big problem for others, especially epileptics, who can suffer from seizures under fluorescent bulbs. According the U.K.'s Migraine Action Association and other health organizations, the lights also cause headaches, as well as nausea, dizziness, and even physical pain for those suffering with lupus, according to the study.
In both the United States and the United Kingdom, traditional incandescent bulbs are set to be completely phased out by 2012. Surely those with medical conditions can be given exemptions easily enough, but if they can't simply walk into a store and buy a traditional bulb, just how many companies will continue manufacturing them and how much will they cost? Will traditional bulb clubs be the marijuana-buying clubs of the 21st century?
Such recent health concerns around energy-saving fluorescent bulbs might be another reason to push research into production of LED-based lighting options, which are even more efficient than CFL lighting, and even more durable, with a single bulb potentially never burning out. Such LED-based bulbs are available now, but at per-bulb costs that dwarf those of the relatively expensive CFL bulbs.

THIS IS TOTALLY TRUE. I am 25 and I get horrible migraine headaches. I can go months, even a year without getting one, but if I have to work under fluorescent lights it can bring them on. Twice I have gone to the ER for one reason, and ended up having to be treated for a migraine because of the lights they use in hospitals. For those that think its just a headache you should be grateful that you can't empathize with the vomit enducing wrath of a migraine that is some of the worst pain ever. I world of only fluorescent lights is my personal hell.

It is trragic to see how easily you all are manipulated by the irrelevent media stories when you should be aware that the economy is collapsing along with the dollar and we should be banning ALL china imports - they are going to dump their 1.3 trillion us dollars and invest in Euros and thenguess what - they will own US and our dollar worth nothing. So keep up the good work and save a few penies on your stupid eco lightbulbs....you are in for more than a headache and don't even know it. Morons.

I am absolutely terrified of these lights. i suffer from migraines and cannot stay in stores very long because of them (unless I wear my sunglasses indoors to block the flourescents.
I would never have these lights in my house-it would be like losing my freedom to live the way I want.
Whatever happened to freedom in this country???
Can we make a bigger stink about this because no one knows this and we migraine sufferers are not making a loud enough noise!

Fluorescent bulbs have been known to cause headaches for years.

At what point do we finally tell our governments (at all levels) to stay the heck out of our business and tend to the very real problems facing our nation? One of the cornerstones of our society is freedom-of-choice. I don't need some pin-headed government "official" telling me what my choice is. If I choose to use the new bulbs I will, If not, I won't. With all the money involved in lightbulbs I seriously doubt the companies making incandescent bulbs are going to stop making them. I am more than seventy years old, and the "law" inside my house is ME.

now i know why i had such pain and migraines when i had the light in my place i suffered tremendously,i have fybromyalgia and my pain had worsend along with the headaches but i removed the light and they vanished,so what good are they for everything seems to have a domino effect, one way its good the other its play heck on the body so saving energy isnt always the answer....unles you see it as by saving energy will kill you off...hmmm?

I don't like these bulbs! They hurt my eyes. I have Sjogren's Syndrome (autoimmune, similar to Lupus). Call me old-fashioned....
TracieJan 2nd 2008 12:16PM
This whole global warming scam is sucking the life out of America and the world. Anyone who suffers from these problems should go now and stock up on the incandescent bulbs, I'm thinking about it anyway, how can a government tell people what kind of light bulbs we can burn, what's next?

"tom hudson says:
I bought a 5 pack of the 60 watt equivalent at Ace hardware..."
tom, first off it's not a conversion to HDTV, but to DIGITAL TV signal. Currently it's generally analog, off air. Analog signals take more bandwith than digital. The gov't is requiring digital signals so it can sell the saved bandwidth. As for the negativity about these "green" lights, well, they're not a good thing, just a quick, easy, "sounds good" thing that never got the R&D needed to make them practical. Maybe in one household, the mercury content would be negligible, but a whole nation...? LEDs would be the answer, if they could be sold for the cost of incandescents.

Regular bulbs CAN NOT BE PHASED OUT without MURDERING THE ENTIRE ANTIQUE LIGHTING BUSINESS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Take the "New Bulbs" and SHOVE 'EM !
If you want to save energy BULLDOZE VEGAS !

stew says:
will these new bulbs ever be available in 3 way types?
They ARE available in 3 way. Check out Lowe's or any store that stocks a large variety of CFL's.
BobbyJan 2nd 2008 3:43PM
I can see it now. Everyone will have to use these bulb soon. The big electric companies will complain about losing money because of the energy savings from the use of this bulb. Oh sorry I forgot companies hardly ever roll back saving to consumers, they just increase the cost of the goods being purchased too keep or increase profit.
deletedJan 2nd 2008 8:04PM
That's right, FORCE The consumer to buy the new ones, don't let them decide for themselves. We wouldn't want anyone to have a FREE MARKET now, would we? I use the pigtail lights for outside lamps, but they DO cause headaches because they are weaker and stain your eyes. It's wrong to allow government to mandate things that should be left up to the citizen. Industry is working behind the scenes to pass laws the make people spend more money on their products. They made billions when we converted from records to CDS, and from VHS to DVDs, now they're gonna MAKE everyone throw away their TV and get a HD tv... and now this. Get a clue Washington: We want FREE ENTERPRISE, not a brave new world socialist utopia!

I've used the eco bulbs exclusively for over 13 years without any medical consequences.
Such research countering eco bulbs is utter bunk by pseudo-experts who play to the tune of bulb corporations.
Day-in Day-out we get one blurb or another that smacks of "research". Can't wait for the day when the use of air conditioning and SUV's is deemed a felony!!!
jolieJan 3rd 2008 7:56AM
Thanks for this info! I've avoided the CFL's up until now because I noticed at friend's houses that they make a high-pitched ringing noise, as do those electronic bug repellers and that is something that drives me crazy! I was having some seriuos problems with my eyes a while back when I was working in an flourescent lit office and also using a blackberry..Bright flashes of light and vertigo/nausea..When I had two intense episodes I went to 2 opthomologists and they came up with floaters/possible retinal problems..My doctor said migraines and also the last doctor did as well..I never`had the headaches though.. Just had my first real migraine upon waking a couple of days ago with the headache/ sensitivity to light and nausea, it was murder! Wasn't brought on by flourescents UNLESS it was a flourescent in the apartment below or next door or maybe the computer??? Anyway I was just about to order some CFL's full spectrum from VERILUX as an enviromental thing..Has anyone used those?
Real drag about the mercury too!
DustinJan 2nd 2008 2:01PM
All fluorescent bulbs have mercury in them. The amount of mercury is very small, however many businesses have used the long fluorescent bulbs for years and no one complained of the mercury. Now that they are in people's home it’s a big deal? Fluorescent bulbs do save you a lot of money over time. It is a step to help save energy and billions of tons of pollution that goes in the atmosphere. If one breaks in your house all you have to do is scope it in a bag and send it off to the recycling plant which is provided on the box from which your light came from. From what I have read lights, TVs, computer monitors and so on flicker even it you don't notice. People who have health problems and are affected by light flickering are going to suffer regardless. I have these bulbs in my house and I have not had any problems, but I also don't stare at the bulbs for a long period of time and most of them are covered up
pisarkJan 2nd 2008 4:13PM
oh dear, what are the odds of getting a migraine from these bulbs? because I get migraines very easily, and enegy-saving or not, I'd want to put my health first..
ritac1177Jan 2nd 2008 11:20PM
I can't stand those light bulbs! I bought a couple thinking that it would cut my elec costs ... those things hurt my eyes, give me headaches, and makes me extremely tired. I got rid of all mine and switched back to traditional bulbs. You can save just as much money with traditional bulbs if you buy a lower wattage and shut off lights that aren't necessary! Banning traditional bulbs is just another waste of $$ for consumers! Just wait, eventually you're gonna hear how now we have to build special disposal sites for light bulbs! WASTE!
LorneJan 2nd 2008 7:58PM
I have all these bulbs in my house. My wife has been complaining of migranes the past few weeks that I have had them in. I have been slapping her in the head and calling her mental. Maybe I should stop slapping her, although she does need it and I still think she's mental. Anyways, I'm going to throw these out the same way i do with others. If they can't send a postage paid box for proper disposal, not my problem.
ilyrpz143ilyenzJan 2nd 2008 1:19PM
I've gotten migraines from florescence bulbs whether there curly or not. I've had problems since grade school being in a class room with florescent bulbs. Maybe thats why some children these days have trouble learning cause there poor eyes are hurting along with there heads!
