Kid, Expecting PlayStation 3, Finds Phonebook in Box on Christmas
Picture this: it's Christmas morning. You've been drooling over the PS3 for a year now but haven't been able to afford one. You open one final, big present under the tree and, low and behold, it's that Sony console you've been dreaming of. But, when you open the box, you're not greeted by the smell of plastics and expensive electronics or the sight of a sleek, black console. Instead you find a ratty old phone book. The very real kid, who lives in Thousand Oaks, California, got this surprise earlier this week when he opened the PS3 purchased for him by his parents. No, they didn't buy it from a guy in a white van on the street corner; they purchased it at the EB Games franchise down the road, and it's unclear just what the store is going to do about it. Sadly, this has become a somewhat common trend in the electronics world, whether it's a computer hard drive box filled with bathroom tiles or a rock-filled iPod box.
What can you do? The most fool-proof approach is to just open the box before you leave the store. But, if the recipient decides they didn't really want that new gadget you're stuck paying a restocking fee because you opened the box. You can of course videotape the opening of the gift, but not everyone likes having their gift opening moments recorded. So, we'd recommend just giving the box a little shake before you take it to the cash register.

serves him right. this all leads up to the materialistic behavior of christmas. you people have lost the true meaning of christmas. thank goodness i'm jewish and know the real meaning of my holiday. hope he got coal in his stocking.

well, j. rose, i hope you realize that if u r jewish, then why does it matter what the hell this kids gets for CHRISTmas, if u dont believe in this holiday, dont act like a b!tch and feel for the kid! how would you feel if that happened to your kid or you? what if you spent $500 f*cking dollars on a f*cking phone book? gosh, people are so selfish and rude

Roberta--Jewish people celebrate Hannukah. It is celebrated close to Christmas. The poster did not say he celebrated Christmas--he said at least he knew the meaning behind his holiday. Meaning Hannukah.

even in shipping the people in the shipping department should check the article. thieves are everywhere. i bought a pair of 14k earrings for my sister for christmas from midnight velvet and when it arrived the jewelry box was in the package with no earrings in it. i tried to see if the package was tampered with at the PO but it did not appear to be. fortunately midnight velvet made good on this purchase - some companys may not believe you. so shipping beware.

My son received a reconditioned PSP for Christmas this year. The box was new and had a sticker on it stating that it was reconditioned and had a 30 day warranty. The man paid $150. for the system (no game) and God knows how much for a 1 year warranty on it. When he opened it, there were no instructions for it. I figured they forgot to put them in, so when we were at EB Games, I told them that there were no instructions. The man looked at me like I was stupid and said it's used. I told him for $150., new or used it should have instructions. They don't care, they just want the money. Lisa

Ooops; I Comprehend It Now.....It Was My Mistake In Thinking Rose Meant Christmas Was Her Holiday. For That I Do Apollogize. And Yes, I Do Agree That Too Many People Are Way Too Materialistic When It Comes To Christmas. But It Still Must Have Been Sad For That Recipient. ;0)

Very sad and very common, especially with high-end electronics. Associates don't always have time to check the boxes being returned, especially is they are trying to circumvent a customer "issue". There is always the issue with the supply chain as well... which is what this sounds like. We have opened our shipments of stuff (you name it, toys, clothes, electronics) and found box knives, exposed box knife blades, cd's we never sold, even worn kmart sweatpants. Either pranks or carelessness. But when you are on the recieving end of those surprises, but just looks like plain stupidity! I feel sorry for the kid.

This "Grouchy Granny" agrees with these comments completely! If it had happened to my granddaughter, I'd have revved up the old nose and sniffed out the miscreants! They'd then soon wish they'd never done it. GRRR!

1 of 2 things are going on here.
Either someone at the store has got them a PS3 or the boy got 2 of them for Christmas and the parents are trying to get their money back.
Either way, it is a scam of some sort.
If the former, shame on the store, if the later, shame on the parents.
What a fine example they are showing their child.

My boyfriend works at GameStop (owned by the same parent company as EB games) and I know for a fact that their location ALWAYS checks what is inside the box if something is returned or traded in. It's just one of their rules and it is strictly enforced at their store...as for the other branches...I can't tell you anything for sure...just know that there are still a few places that do their jobs!

I believe the story is true...soon all retailers will have scales like the self service grocery stores have, with product weight in the barcode to match up. I had a similar thing happen to me a number of years ago. I bought a 3-pack of Kodak film...one cannister was filled with rocks. The box was glued shut so there was no way to prove where it was done.
BonnieDec 30th 2007 1:46AM
it could have happened a number of ways not related to dishonesty on the receiver's part. It could have been stolen in the mfg warehouse, by the shipper, in the store warehouse, by a shrewd shoplifter......don't be so quick to assume people are always out to rip people off.

packages can look brand new all the thiefs do is take a blow dryer to the seal sticker and it peels back no problem with out breaking the seal put whatever in the box that weighs about the same then just take it back since its a unopened package they dont open it to check

I bought a playstation 2 with singstar for my daughter. She opened the sealed singstar case and no disk! Gamestop told me they couldnt help because they did not package that combo only sold it and Sony told me they couldn't help because they didn't package it either. It seems no one want's to claim resposibility for missing game.

after rereading the story and thinking about it , I think what most likely happened is or at least what could have happened is this: someone bought it and swapped out the ps3 and all that came with it for the phone book and returned it to the store where witht he help of a store employee who is on the scam gets his cash back which he or she then shares with the store employee who then goes makes sure the phony p(hone) S(cam)3 gets back onthe shelf so it gets bought

That is why I always check inside the box. I even do that if I order a pizza because alot of times they forget the toppings.

this comment system is a bit screwwy.........I posted a comment BEFORE christmas but it wasn't posted until AFTER.........
either way....this sucks....no kid deserves this...no PERSON deserves this, especially not in the name of bashing the materialism of christmas or a free system or anything.........I sugguest that major retailers like walmart take the systems out of the box and line them up in bulletproof glass cases and keep the boxes behind the counter. that way people who truly want one can know they are getting a legit system. this would keep stuff like this from happening if applied to used systems in addendum, forcing the store to open boxes and see what is inside before the person leaves.
