Is iTunes Illegal? The Switched Show Podcast Sorts It Out
Is your iTunes library illegal? The RIAA says so; as far as we can understand, the Recording Industry Association of America now thinks merely ripping a CD to your hard drive (a CD you legally purchased and own) is, in itself, illegal. We peel away the motives behind this latest salvo in the digital content wars. Plus: w00t. WHAT? That's a word? In a dictionary? Share our confusion in the latest Switched Show Podcast, online for direct download here or, even better, for iTunes subscription.

Wow, these guys are morons. If they make ripping music from cds illegal, which will most likely take away burning, putting them on mp3 players, and other stuff, then you can say good by to the cd discs cause everyone's just going to buy itune cards and microsoft points to buy music...what idiots, I bought the cd and I have a right to put those songs on my mp3 because I don't feel like carrying it around with a junky cd player!

idiotic greedy money grubbing morons! for starters its a bit late to be trying to stop cd ripping now, the genie has been let outof the bottle soits a bit late to put the cork back in! and even if the succeed in getting a ruling that says rippig is illegal it will likely mean very little as people will still do so, it might slow down the illegal file sharing of new material but for existing materil it will do absolutely nothing to slow it down let alone stop it, something in my opinion cannot be done

What greed! What stupidity!
As it is, I don't understand why I can't do the same with my DVDs. I've paid for them (or over-paid, I should say), and I'd like to watch them on my iPod! It's just as well, since I can watch it on my TV or my Laptop. My iPod's just another viewing device, as far as I'm concerned.

If they were really serious about this. They can start right here in Manhattan NY> 1. remove the illeagle selling of dvds on subways for $5 while the movie is still in the theaters. And arrest the vendors on every street corner on canal street with their tables full of illeagle dvds and cds. I'm sure this goes on in every city. Out in the open with the police standing next to the sellers.

If they're trying to say that making copies for resale I could understand. On the other hand if you bought the cd then you should have the right to make cd's with your own personal songs on it. Beside as I understand it the cd revolution is coming to an end soon anyway due to car stereos coming out with sd memory card slots so you can do just that same thing on an sd card. This will surely bleed into home stereo equipment. So it would have to be saved digitally to use the new technology. Besides when you buy an Itunes card each song cost to download therefore you have paid for the right to download it! I assume there will be a charge of some type to download to an sd memory card, but they have a real problem with piracy. however If you pay for a download it should be yours to do with it what you will. They don't complain about rappers using the beats from songs to make thier songs, so why are they so insistant that something is illegal when it's been paid for in one way or the other? This to me is greedy and motivated by some idiot out there who has too much time on thier hands apparently.

Well, if after you buy the CD and then put it on your computer for others to listen to is it wrong? Is it wrong to have a bunch of people over to your house to watch a rented movie, or listen to brand new music at a party? Is it called wrong when someone buys a movie, or rents one, or buys a CD then a third party that has given no financial contribution to listen to the purchased music, or watch a movie it illegal?
I think no, I think that if someone initially buys music, or a DVD then wishes to share it with others it should not be wrong, the initial purchase has been made and the fact that third party listeners and viewers shouldn't be penalized for taking part in something that is meant to entertain people. I think that file sharing should be classified as an attractive nuisance (real legal term) Meaning for example if Jonny has a super cool water park in his front yard and teases people with it, when people use it he can't legally sue unless monetary damages incur. I think file sharing falls under this same loop-hole law. If you buy it, put it on your itunes, mix your own CD and let people listen then they in turn mix their own CD it shouldn't be conisdered stealing. Also what people do or provide on file sharing web sites knowingly or not willfully allow millions upon millions of people to download billions and billions of songs, videos, pictures, even porn, yes porn. It is virtually impossible to control every download, unless you force the host site to make the customer pay an initial "membership fee" and then allow a certain number of downloads...oh wait that was napster, but since more sites have come to surface...one down 5 more pop up....get over it music and movie celebreties....you have millions and we don't....mke your DVD's, CD's and a very reasonable price to compete with file sharing and illegal downloading and you MIGHT make a dent in piracy, but then again its hard to compete with free. I don't have any suggestions, my degree is in civil Law-not advertising/marketing.
