Scientists Clone Fluorescent Cats
They claim there is a scientific purpose for their experiments, but to be honest with you, we can't quite figure out what that purpose may be. The South Korean scientists who created this pair of fluorescent felines claim that this breakthrough will help them study diseases and stem cells. We might not be biologists, but we're not really sure what the connection between AIDS and a cat that looks like a jack-o-lantern is.
This is far from the first time scientists have cloned animals and genetically altered them to glow unearthly colors. Mice, rabbits, pigs -- nothing is safe. A company even bred genetically altered fluorescent fish to sell as pets, called GloFish. Check out our gallery of other flourescent animals below.

I think that this is great keep up the great work korea ,maybe they can alter a gene so insulin dependent diabetics wont have to inject themselves with insulin every day and everything that goes with that disease

I cant stand myself when these so called phd scientists etc try to play the "im smarter than you game" The fact is it isnt about research and finding cures any way you can and putting anything at risk. Its about doing it the right way.Honestly if you people were so smart you would find another way to do research besides messing with nature.Your all so brilliant you cant cure cancer or aids. You cant even cure a cold but suppress it.
Go make you kids glow morons.

Do you seriously believe this BS??? I've got a white cat and I can do the same thing with a green light. You should see what happens to him when he gets into the Christmas tree..

I THINK WE SHOULD BE MORE WORRIED ABOUT OTHER THINGS THAN MAKING GLO IN THE DARK ANIMALS
HOW ABOUT A CURE FOR CANCER OR AIDS OR OUR KIDS SCHOOLING
IT SEEMS CRUEL IN A WAY

WHY DONT YOU DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR A CHANGE

Personally, I'm with Chris, R, and the real researchers on this message board. If it can help people, I'm all for it as long as if the animals start to suffer, they're humanely put down. Also, having a glowing cat would kick some serious butt! I have six kittens, and do you know how hard it is NOT to step on them by accident because I can't see them at night? I've actually got bruises and a messed up knee from falling when I tried not to step on one of mine.
To Kronk, you're an idiot. If it made the world a better place for everyone, I'd kick you with a smile.
To the rest of the ill-informed here, Grammar and SpellCheck never hurt anyone. Please use it before posting an idiotic comment on a message board. It's annoying and frustrating to try and figure out what you're trying to say with all the misspellings and grammar mistakes. Your English teachers would be ashamed.
Also, just remember, there are LOTS of natural diseases in nature that animals can get, and some can even be passed to humans . . . like rabies. Good luck with that one. There's only ONE person in recorded history to survive. The doctors had to put her in a chemically-induced coma for 10 days. She spent the next three years learning to walk, talk, eat and drive again.
Do more research before posting, and keep yourself from looking like an idiot.

Holy crap... Do some of you dolts NOT know how to read???
The research was specifically FOR developing methods to combat disease.

The reason they make them glow is so that you can see the meat in the gravy.
seektruthinlove7Dec 15th 2007 4:52AM
come on now we know in almost all asian cultures cats and dogs are seen as food sources delicasies if you will. where are the jokes that the experiments are to make food more easily seen and captured
Michael PrivettDec 15th 2007 6:22AM
I think it's a shame. All the innocent cats and dogs being put down and thrown out on the streets and they waste their time doing this. I never cared about anything that has came out of South Korea. What's next makin' them glow so they eat them in the dark?
DeeDec 15th 2007 6:25AM
Is everyone missing a crucial point here? Don't they eat cats in Korea and Viet Nam? How convienient to make a nocternal animal glow so it can be more easily caught! I flat out do not like the idea that scientists are playing with DNA.

Cats don't sweat, they glow!

Glocats will be available early next year. Also available will be the ever popular glofish, globirds, and glotoads. Supply will be somewhat limited initially. Glocats, 12 weeks old, only $399.00. Requires no special food or care. Be the first on your block to own an awesome GLOCAT.

Ok, there is nothing wrong with these cats, they are not in any pain due to the tagging. This is a form of testing that is also used in research for muscular dystrophy. they get one injection with a protein that travels to every cell in the body, researchers are testing these proteins to see if it can be attached to a medicne for muscular dystrophy and AIDs and other diseases.this is defintly not a waste of money, im against animal crulety but this has nothing to do with that, the people that write these articles should maybe know a little about what they are talking about. also its not our job to focus on saving the animals, we have to worry about saving our species before any other. think about it human race? or cats, mice, and rabbits?
BrendaDec 15th 2007 10:18AM
I think people should stop using animals and use these hard nosed criminals for their experiments. You know like murders, rapist, etc....Leave the animals alone....
ChrisDec 15th 2007 10:21AM
This is just another Jesus freak ranting about what evolution gave to humans, an evolved brain, so lets use it! These animals aren't being harmed and there's TONS to be learned from cloning. The knowledge gained is limitless.

i WANT a glowing pussie! i could turn the lights off and still b able to find it
lionsafari95Dec 15th 2007 12:47PM
I think that this is completly wrong to alter the genes of animals just becase they think they have made a break through in science. First they start with the fish. What if those fish breed with the normal fish. Then that has just contaminated the whole fish supply!! I mean I think they only made the cats glow just for their own sake. Did they ever once think about the animal and not themselves!! People come on. the O zone layer is dying and all you care about is making animals glow!!. What is your problem!! Animals are going extict, theres polution every where, and now you are working on glowing animals. How important is that. Every one who agrees with that is CRAZY!!
Animal loverDec 15th 2007 12:46PM
THIS IS RETARDED. Scientist always think that they have made a break thruogh whenever they can make something glow. Animals have feelings too!! Every time scientist think that they have made a break through something goes wrong. They have no idea what they are doing do the poor creatures. and when the animals go extincted I will blaim them.

please, lets remember that our government has us in its best interest.
we are a free people and can do whatever we want. work, have homes, shop, and voice our opinions openly. we can also be creative, and that means, experiments. It may serve a purpose one day. Someone could be lost in the wilderness, or in an ice storm, and this may be a means to find that person. think positive.
