Scientists Clone Fluorescent Cats
They claim there is a scientific purpose for their experiments, but to be honest with you, we can't quite figure out what that purpose may be. The South Korean scientists who created this pair of fluorescent felines claim that this breakthrough will help them study diseases and stem cells. We might not be biologists, but we're not really sure what the connection between AIDS and a cat that looks like a jack-o-lantern is.
This is far from the first time scientists have cloned animals and genetically altered them to glow unearthly colors. Mice, rabbits, pigs -- nothing is safe. A company even bred genetically altered fluorescent fish to sell as pets, called GloFish. Check out our gallery of other flourescent animals below.

Fluorescent cats taste better! And when ur all curled up on the couch watching your favorite movie you don't have to turn on the lights to see the crumbs! You people need to get a life...you obviously have no concept of everything around you that came from animal testing. Everything from your vitamins, medicines, to your makeup. I'll take a better quality of life and kick a cat with a smile!

That's awesome! Tell me where to buy one. My 4yr old daughter loves these pictures. She's begging me for one for Christmas. They could sell these pretty kitties to help fund the research. PS It seems to me that most of the people putting comments on here don't know what they are talking about. Genetic engineering is not the evil you think it is. See the comment by R at 12/13/07 12:53 PM. They know what they're talking about.

Don't you morons understand that this kind of testing is harmless to the animals? It may lead to a significant breakthrough in medical science. How many of you have been diagnosed with some form of cancer or know of someone who has? How about Alzheimer's, rheumatoid arthritis? The list goes on. Wouldn't be wonderful if this lead to a cure for anything terminal? Before you get up on your very short soap box, educate yourself first!
It is better to keep quiet and have people THINK you're a fool than to open your mouth and PROVE it.

This is absolutely stupid! These scientists are the loser that can't cut it when it comes to finding cures for cancer, heart disease, parkinsons, etc.
Why don't you guys do something really meaningful and leave the poor animals alone. What a waste of time, money, energy and animals.

Kronk, how can you say your life is better when it is paid for by the pain, suffering, misery and death of other helpless species? You will kick a cat with a smile? You are sad.. I'm sure there are a lot of people who would glady kick you for saying that.. with a smile.. on the grounds that it makes their lives better. Please don't advocate harm upon animals, that is a sick way to be.

This should be a clue to stop trying to play God.
I am surprised that North Korea developed this technology! I wonder if the people ate these cats, if so, did their stools glow?

None of the people objecting are responding to what R. wrote, but then they seem to think that elementary school standards of punctuation, grammar, spelling and distinguishing between unrelated words such as "there" and "their" are just too hard!
:-) If my cat glowed, it'd make it less likely I'd trip over him in the night.

I suppose this would be useful if your cat got lost, at night.Other than that....???

Well, there's two schools of thought on this: (1) Flourescent cats in the dark are easier to see crossing streets at night so kind motorists can avoid running them down, or (2) On the other hand, flourescent cats in the dark are easier to see crossing streets making it easier for redneck a'hole pickup truck drivers to run them down flatter than a pancake.

Naturally florecent cats are disapointing. I mean, now where will the fun be in spray painting them. Another lifelong pastime robbed from the world...

Fae: "I am certain there are millions of people who would volunteer, if paid."
If we, as scientists, offered to pay people to participate in medical experimentation, do you understand who would arrive on our doorsteps?
People without money. Poor people. The economically disadvantaged. Recent immigrants with children to feed and the homeless. Millions of people? Don't you mean millions of poor people in third world countries? Do you honestly think it is more ethical to use poor people to conduct medical experimentation? Doctors used to do this in the sixteenth century. You think this is a step FORWARD?
You call yourself compassionate?
In addition, R, thank you for your considerate explanation on the use of GFP-labeled cells. As a researcher, I appreciate your comments.

For one thing it is cruel to clone animals and make them glow and the other thing is that God put animals on the Earth to eat not to play with there insides. Also God made every animal different and it is not right to make them the same or clone them. And for you people who don't know IT'S NOT RIGHT TO PLAY GOD!!!
