Peeved Bill Gates Says Everyone Copies Microsoft

This line of questioning, which essentially accused Microsoft of copying other people's inventions, sent the bespectacled founder into a tirade about how Microsoft does all the stupid things first, and that other companies, learning from Microsoft's mistakes, are able to build perfect versions of a particular product or service (and subsequently get the credit for being innovators).
Gates declared that what Microsoft does is the baseline for the entire industry, and whatever it doesn't do is the innovation. And by that definition everyone else is innovating. That's a pretty innovative, if not a little sarcastic, save/explanation.
But seriously, Gates cites IPTV and tablet computers as two areas in which Microsoft is leading the pack. "Is anyone else doing tablet computers?" he asks.
We understand Gate's being upset, and he makes some good points in his sarcastic rant about everyone borrowing from each other (with particular attention paid to Apple of course). But we do have to question some of his claims.
Sure, there are plenty of Microsoft Office and Word clones out there, but Word was far from the first word processor on the PC. Microsoft's entry only got copied after it crushed the competition, namely Wordperfect and Lotus. We racked our brains trying to think of where other companies had blatantly copied Microsoft and actually came up empty. If you've got any examples, be sure to leave them in the comments, in the meantime make sure to check out the gallery below of Microsoft's other "me too" products and services (including everything from Zune and Xbox 360 to the original Windows and MSN, which were inspired by the early Mac OS and the product of our parent company AOL, respectively).
How about you? Do you think Microsoft's reputation as a copycat is deserved, or is Bill Gates right when he says that his company does, in fact, innovate?

From the comments on this blog, Bill Gates has not been the innovator he is touted to be, on the other hand, his contribution to the world of computers is a giant one.

Novell Netware and Active directory. Gee where did Active Directory come from hmmm do a little backround checking and you will see that a more secure platform for NT 4 was novell client running on top of it. And the NDS tree manages networks the way that Active directory does. Novell was around long before Active Directory. I am a fan of Microsucks but to say they dont use others ideas is not the truth. besides what does BG care. He owns half the world anyway. I would not care. If someone made that statement to me. I would just say," your mad you didn't do it."

I would think the true object measure of innovation would be the good ole US Patent – if you innovate something that is truly unique you should be able to get a patent for it. Now let’s see what company holds the records for most patents? Is it Microsoft? NO. They aren’t even in the top 5. IBM had over 2000 new patents last year – the 14th year in a row of being the top patent recipient.

I really do not like Microsoft for my OS. But I have to say some of the things they have are good. They may be stolen from other things but if it was not for them being on Windows some of them would never become popular because people are so attached to their Windows and will never try anything else.

Anyone in technology for last 20 years can site numerous examples where Microsoft copied and extinquished better products through a monopoly enabled by PC OS dominance (also not developed by MS). MS earned their success; understanding and leveraging their power but has stiffled innovation.

I don't understand what all the complaint about Vista is. I bought a laptop in July with Vista and have had no problems at all. My old printer wasn't compatible but then it was 5 yrs old so didn't expect it to be. Got a new Lexmark with WiFi printing and absolutely love it.

Bill Gates is guilty of starting and running one of the most corrupt monopolies in US history. He should be in jail, period.

I have been in the computer field longer than Bill Gates.. I heard in the early 70's that Gates went to IBM and told them he had an operating system (DOS)that would operate all of IBM's computers. They made an agreement and he then went to DRDOS and bought the rights for 50,000 dollars. Then whamo Microsoft.......

The AUDACITY of that man to call himself THE INNOVATOR. Being a loyal Mcintosh user since 1984, I can't even begin count all the times Bill Gates has POORLY stolen Mcintosh's inventions, innovations and ideas.
Although I have to admit that complaining about people stealing from him IS an original idea, but still, just another bad one.
Good thing Billy LOVES his money, because that's all his Intellectual Property Theft has brought him.

So who pray tell had the patience knowledge and perseverance to begin this whole new high tech world of ours??? Bill Gates nuff said right there~~ Really when it is all said and done, he is the one that shall go down in history as the inventor!!~~
There is one Einstein, one Bill Gates, without the first one of courage wisdom and *hudspa* there would be no others to follow~~~
I have long admired what this one single man with a vision has accomplished!

Go ahead, grouse about Microsoft. Then, grouse about Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Big Tobacco, and your favorite political party's enemy.
Mac was my choice until they charged too much to deliver too late with too few applications. I loved Apple, but they did not love me back.
Remember, love is all you need.

Bill Gates I believe you have the right to express your anger....
If I was as rich,as you { which to say I'm not,I'm very poor}I'd be justified to be angry about the situation too....
Have a Very Merry Christmas, Mr Gates...and a Happy New Year! And God Bless You ! Your an OK,Guy!!!!!!

what goes around, comes around!!! Bill...you stole the original idea of a PC software operating system, and took the money and ran...now you can't take the heat when someone else is doing the same to you!

Courts should go back to the beginning of MS-DOS and build a time line of what came from where. Revisit patents and straighten out what entities should have patents on computer applications. I'd bet that the MicroSoft empire would fall. At the very least, lose most of its worth.

To all of the people who say, "If you don't like it, do it yourself!" or some other such nonsense obviously don't work in the computer industry.
Here is how the real world works in IT: You start a competing technology in this case let's say it's Linux or some other open source technology.
Microsoft has the idiots that write for the so-called 'technology' journals write hit pieces on your technology.
The CEO whom your pitching your technology doesn't know his keyboard from his mouse and takes the drivel in these magazines seriously.
Want some evidence? Google 'Dan Lyons' or 'Jesse Berst' and read the utter crap they write.
ZD-Net is now owned my C-Net. ZD-Net used to be owned by a company in Buffalo, NY whose owner, did the technical support for ZD-Net.
There is a lot more than just software happening here. Ultimately there is a tremendous amount of politics that are involved and Microsoft is pissed now because there is really nothing they can do to stop Open Source (Which is a much more scientific approach to software development anyway IMHO).
They tried to use SCO to kill Linux and were embarrassed when Novel et al beat the snot out of them in court and they (SCO) were extremely embarrassed as they should be.
The so-called IT Media was busy writing things like, "What SCO Wants, SCO gets!"
Spouting inflammatory BS like "Don't you hippies know that you're doomed?" and "This is real business" and "Sandel wearing 'crunchies' that run Linux" etc. (What ever the hell a 'crunchie' is)
Those same people that wrote those inflammatory are nowhere to be found. I guess a hippie like me (You know former USMC Officer, Former VP of JPMorganChase, One of the founders of Bynari Systems, now a student physician) you know typical hippies like me don't know anything about business.
The fact is there is much more than technology going on. There is a deliberate attempt to control the market via whatever means necessary.
After all, you should approve of Open, peer-reviewed software. It's the scientific method.
Ironically, it's all those who scream, "Microsoft is just competitive." have a point.
It's when they do anything to squash true competition that the average person loses.
Cheers,
Nick

Just some corrections. LISA was an Apple product not a Xerox product.
Apple stole nothing from Xerox. What Apple got from Xerox was the concept of the WIMP interface but it was just the concept and not particularly well executed. No code stolen, freely given or given for compensation was involved. MS on the other hand used the knowledge they gained of the Mac OS while doing contract work for Apple to eventually create Windows.
