It has another market that I haven't seen discussed anywhere yet and that is for scholars. It would need access to things like the Gutenburg project or efforts that other Schools and Universities are undertaking where out of print books and articles on various topics are being archived electronically and if they were made available to devices like the Kindle there would be an explosion of research in areas mostly of interest to scholars. The capacity of the Kindle and the ability to make notes and link them would revolutionize research particularly in areas where the literature is over a hundred years old and not readily available even to general scholarship.

Sam

Comments on Is the Amazon Kindle Really the iPod of Books?

Can you get textbooks this way?

btenajj

Comments on Is the Amazon Kindle Really the iPod of Books?

This is ridiculous! However, the second generation will will have more bells and whistles.

With this product we will see a renewed interest in book reading. You definatley WILL most likley be spending more time searching for the book you want then accually reading it, which will waste your battery.

The price is something to concider. Your paying around $400 for the Kindle itself, and then for about $10.00 a book, Plus .99 cents a month paying for internet connection werever you are. It doesn't seem like a lot, but in the end, including the $400 payed for the Kindle, is a lot to be dealing with.

Another thing to point out is that some people perfer acuall books then reading on a screen, like me. No matter how big you can make the font, imagine spending most of your time reading on a 6 inch screen. sooner or later, it will come to kick you in the butt.

It's also a waste of your money, considering the fact that you don't lose $400 spilling something on a book or dropping it into something. At the most, usually around $20.00. Still a lot, but not $400.

Is it really a great gift? Generally, I don't think so and that's saying a lot coming from a person like me who likes to read 24/7.

In conclusion, I don't think its the "iPod of books." It's not even that great. I don't think it's samrt for people of all ages, no matter the font size to be straining their eyes infront of some 6 inch screen, especially if you have bad eye sight to start with, also like me.

Jeanne

Comments on Is the Amazon Kindle Really the iPod of Books?

I think the Kindle is an extension of the way we receive the written word!!! At one point my husband and I were renting two apartments, one for us and the other for our books (and offices and conference room). Fortunately the two apartments were side by side. I now have well under a thousand physical books--but I have many thousands of books on my computer. With my eBookWise reading device, ten memory chips all full of books, with the chips fitting into two small belt cases, I can literally take several thousand books with me anywhere I go, even with a fairly small purse. This means I will not go totally out of my mind if for any reason I wind up stuck at an airport or hospital for five days.

I use Gutenberg and I buy books from Fictionwise.com and eBookWise.com. There are many other books available at various websites, including the Australian and several European versions of Gutenberg. Baen actually GIVES AWAY (with the permission of its authors) many current and even brand new science fiction and fantasy novels.

The Kindle sounds good to me, but not $261 worth of better than my eBookWise reader, which is smaller than a trade paperback and weighs about the same. Also, I can read with the lights off, and I don't know whether I could do that with the "paper" look of Kindle. Also, I dislike the idea of having the "up" button on one side and the "down" button on the other side. With my present reader, I can turn pages with my left hand while I am eating with my right hand and occasionally looking at the television to see if anything that interests me has suddenly appeared. (My rule is, if the TV show CAN take me away from my book, it has my permission to do so. Mainly we live on the History Channel, with occasional short hops over to PBS.)

So right now, I'm not jumping onto this bandwagon. eBookWise has a color reader that right now is available only to large businesses, to use in courses for their employees, and as soon as it is released to the general public I'm sure I'd love it.

But I'm not going to jump out of a system that works perfectly for me into one that costs more and might not work as well.

Anne Wingate

Comments on Is the Amazon Kindle Really the iPod of Books?

It's too much $$ to spend as is. In another decade, if they really begin to digitize things like textbooks, I think this could be huge in the college world. If you've went to college recently you know how unbelievably expensive the textbooks are. Some are almost as expensive as this device. Usually when you buy a ebook it is around half the price of a hard copy. If Kindle and Sony can continue that relative 50% discount and make them widely available to download in formats to fit these devices, their sales could explode. Imagine going from lugging 50+ pounds of books around every day, and paying top dollar for them, to carrying this small compact e-reader in your pocket, that holds the texts for ALL your classes,And you paid half price for the ebook downloaded versions. That strategy, in the long run, may well make it worth the hefty price tag for many.

Lindsay

Comments on Is the Amazon Kindle Really the iPod of Books?

Even if the price were to drop drastically, I still don't know if I would buy one. The fact of the matter is that in the world that we live in now there aren't very many people who actually read. They "wait for the movie to come out" or buy cliff notes to books that they are required to read. People seem to have forgotten the joys of reading. They don't care about the new worlds that books open up. They just wait for the movie so that they don't have to do any thinking for themselves and don't have to be creative. Anyway, that's my rant, my point is that there aren't enough people who read to make this device all that successful. On top of this books ARE PORTABLE! There is nothing easier than grabbing a book off the shelf, shoving it in your purse or backpack, and having it to read while you're on the go. Why the hell do I need an "Ipod for books" in order to read on the go? This little machine is a waste of technology!

Michelle
