Cell Phone Blamed for Train Death
A man in Berkeley, California was struck and killed yesterday while crossing the train tracks on foot. Witnesses say that he was distracted by talking on his cell phone, resulting in the accident. The man stood by the side of two sets of the tracks waiting for one train to cross, then immediately stepped out onto the tracks and was struck by a second train passing in the opposite direction. This sounds disturbingly similar to an incident in Ohio we reported about in August. There, a teen was texting on his cell phone and did the same thing, crossed the tracks behind one train only to step in front of the second. He survived, his injuries far less severe than those apparently suffered by the Berkeley man.
If you're crossing the train tracks, we think it might be a good idea to put down the cell phone, pause that iPod and take your ear-buds out, and close the lid on your Nintendo DS before you take the risk of becoming the next to be featured in a post like this.

Nilla (11/20/07 2:13 PM)says, "It was not the only the cell phones fault. First of all there should be a blocking at every train crossing, to make sure no one is able to even set foot that close to the train!... People should not be able to accidentally walk on the tracks."
Sadly, she seems to be a dimwit. How many times do we hear about idiots who drive around crossing gates? (Accidental? Hardly.) Or racing to beat a train to a crossing?
The only way to keep people from walking on the tracks is to completely enclose them... and still they'd find a way.
I guess we'll be reading about poor, stupid Nilla dying from the same cause....
HINT: If there are train tracks, there could be a train coming.

People need to learn to PRIORITIZE!
Your life .. and the lives of others take priority over whatever insignificant conversation you are having on your cell phone.
shredNov 20th 2007 6:15PM
There is nothing wrong with the cell phone, just the places it is used. A restraunt, in a car while operating and yes while walking across a busy high way while texting your girl friend. people need to use better judgement.

A very dear friend - a 19 year old wonderful young man - was killed instantly in a car crash caused by the OTHER person on the other side of the median talking on his cell phone and not paying attention to his driving. He jumped the median and crashed head on to the innocent young man who was driving home from college. Some states have a ban on driving and talking on the cell phone - every state needs this law!

These fools get just what they deserve, only not often enough. They kill other people, while drivingf cars, etc.

When the hell are the lawmakers going to pass some legislation with regard to RESTRICTING USE of cellphones? I, personally, have watched people walk right out into traffic while their ears were glued to a cellphone. I have seen "kids" driving along and texting. In fact, here in Minnesota, just last night there was an incident where the 16 year old was driving and texting....she lost control of her car, swerved across four lanes of traffic, ending up on the other sides ditch! Fortunately, she was not hurt bad and NO ONE ELSE was hurt at all....but that is JUST LUCKY! Could have been so much worse. People do not use their common sense, thus......laws need to be passed.
'nuff said!!

I'm not REAL old, but old enough to know that this world turned just fine and life went on just swell without cell phones. Now these "must haves" are responsible for killing and crippling countless numbers of people. If you have one, leave it at home for an entire day. Pretend you don't even have the thing. Odds are at the end of the day you'll still be alive and life will still be going on. I refuse to own one and my son is a junior Vice President at the cell phone divison for Version. Glad he has a great job, but even if he gave one to me, I'd give it back. The world revolved jus fine without them. You all are wasting your money, your time, putting yourself and others in danger using them when you are driving (or crossing tracks). Are they REALLY worth it? Are they REALLY a necessity? I think NOT. Go ahead - try it. Leave it at home just ONE day and see how you survive. I doubt anyone here with a cell phone has the willpower to try it.)

i call stuff like this life's process of "weeding out the stupid!"...of people who are too stupid to live!...only problem is they usually make life hazardous for everyone else around them too!...if you happen to see one about to buy the farm, please don't interfere w/"The Process"...just step back & give them plenty of elbow room!

We have a high trestle, which spans the James River, that flows through this part of Virginia. All my life there have been individuals, who are not familiar with the danger of walking this trestle(a railroad trestle), and have met with an untimely death, when caught half way or so across it. Most of the ones killed on the trestle have either been hit by the train or fallen into James River, and the victims are usually college students. One can get on the trestle from the county side or from a park in the town. There is nothing to hold to along the trestle, and people are warned not to cross there. I am very sorry for the young man's family, who have to face his loss. We should not judge him for being ignorant, because he was distracted.
