Cell Phone Blamed for Train Death
A man in Berkeley, California was struck and killed yesterday while crossing the train tracks on foot. Witnesses say that he was distracted by talking on his cell phone, resulting in the accident. The man stood by the side of two sets of the tracks waiting for one train to cross, then immediately stepped out onto the tracks and was struck by a second train passing in the opposite direction. This sounds disturbingly similar to an incident in Ohio we reported about in August. There, a teen was texting on his cell phone and did the same thing, crossed the tracks behind one train only to step in front of the second. He survived, his injuries far less severe than those apparently suffered by the Berkeley man.
If you're crossing the train tracks, we think it might be a good idea to put down the cell phone, pause that iPod and take your ear-buds out, and close the lid on your Nintendo DS before you take the risk of becoming the next to be featured in a post like this.

can we say thining the herd?
is your conversation that important that you can't put the celly down when crossing RR tracks?
StephNov 20th 2007 3:17PM
Why not place the responsibility where it lies? It is too dangerous to be crossing RR tracks on foot. However, if you have to, at least have enough common sense to pay attention to what is going on around you. Cell phones are "things" they do not control a person or make a person step into a dangerous situation. The person is responsible for his/her own actions.

IT GETS SORT OF MESSY, BUT A SURE WAY TO THIN OUT THE NIT WITS WHO ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN TO THEMSELVES. NO PITY HERE.

I hate the cell phone nuisance in libraries. I live in Norman, Oklahoma. The administrators of the University of Oklahoma library have tolerated the cell phone nuisance for years. They also tolerate people eating food in the library. This is a reprehensible outrage. Crumbs attract insects which attack books. The Norman library administration is guilty of the same irresponsibility.

PsychoticnewbieNov 20th 2007 3:28PM
it's not the cell phones that caused the idiot to walk onto the tracks and not pay attention..it's the morons who ABUSE them. I am sick and tired of walking in parking lost having to dodge these morons driving while talking on them, or talking on them while in grocery stores, or so on. get OFF those things will ya? 4 people died over the summer locally, becuase one of them was texting while driving. stupid is as stupid does.

Look around- some people cant function without a cellphone on their ear- must be people that are very insecure

god bless our country from the stupid hick's that feel pointing out a fact that some of our countrymen are so stupid they dont understand not to walk around on RR tracks talking on cell phones, thus getting run down by a train? as far as hiding, last i checked its called the constitution, and everyone, (yes even the stupid morons) have a right to say what they feel, even if it doesn't make some people feel good. if you can't handle the truth, possibly you are the one hiding under the freedoms our country provides.

I am sick of cell phone users when they drive too. Get the heck off, what is so important that you feel you can put everyone else's lives at rsik. SELFISH

TO TAMMY: AMEN!!! I have "almost" been hit several times myself, by idiots on their cell phones who are oblivious to everything else going on. They are like robots. Get off the damn phones, jerks. I had a father with two toddlers strapped in their carseats, screech to a stop at an extremely busy 4-way intersection. He landed past the stoplight in the middle of intersection and had to back up to get back behind the light. He's so lucky he lived through that one (and myself as well). He would have hit us had we not taken the few seconds to make sure everyone else had stopped as they were supposed to before we proceeded through our green light. I'm sure if his wife had witnessed it, she would have been horrified!
To Nilla:
The guy didn't accidently walk onto the tracks. That was his route. Even if you put a "blockade" up, young guys will just jump over it! That is an unrealistic solution. There are millions of miles of track that run through tiny towns, and the residents who live there walk over them as a cut-through. (I wouldn't, but many guys are known to.)
The solution is for the laws in the U.S. TO OUTLAW CELL PHONE USE WHILE YOUR VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. It would save so many peoples' lives as well as the other non-fatal accidents.
I know I would feel a whole lot safer!

It is hard to see or hear when you have your head and a cellphone stuck up your a$$.
MrsPNov 20th 2007 3:56PM
I've seen the same thing happen at the Metra (commuter train) station in Berwyn, IL a couple of years ago. It was sickening. I was about 150' away and SAW the woman look up at the engineer just before the train hit her. I don't want to describe what happened when she landed. My stomach churns thinking about it.
My heart goes out to the train engineers.

Tory is missing the point. My point was that regardless of the cell phone it was still dangerous. Maybe you don't have kids or can't have them. Your child could have wandered over there its dangerous. Why do all of you have to act like morans and say something bad all the time. So i'm not on tory level to say anything bad about her or him back. I'm a teacher so saying something bad about someone is no joy of mine. However God is the one controlling death he decides when we leave this earth so watch your attitudes and the things you say. And just be happy you are still blessed to be here. Anyways back to my HAPPY LIFE (that has no drama to talk bad)
