Best Buy Caught Faking Low Nintendo Wii Supplies

Nintendo's Wii console has been very hard to find for a long time now -- so long that some are calling shenanigans. A lot of folks think that Nintendo is artificially creating news and demand by keeping supplies of its little white console low. Those claims have never been substantiated, but now we have some proof that some other players are getting in on the game. The Consumerist has is reporting that Best Buy employees are clearing out their Wii inventories by broadcasting that they're down to a single Wii console -- over and over again.
The report was filed by a witness at the Princeton, New Jersey Best Buy. The witness saw an employee parade around holding a Wii over her head while another employee announced "Julie is now walking through the store with our last Nintendo Wii! If you're looking for a Nintendo Wii, please look for Julie!" Someone in the store grabbed the box and bought the console, of course. 30 minutes later, another employee did the same thing, with another Wii held aloft for all to see. The witness claims he overheard the store's managers discussing the scheme and planning to send Julie out a third time forty minutes later.
This isn't the first time Best Buy has been caught doing something shady: Earlier this year, some branches of the chain set up a second, secret version of the Best Buy Web site, which was accessible only from within the store and had higher prices than the public Web site, presumable to keep people from getting lower in-store prices. The discount chain has also been accused of tricking people into signing up for subscriptions to MSN, as well as selling a hard drive that contained only bathroom tiles.

Ppl are not looking at the real situation. There is not a shortage, what is happening is these stores are advertising a really good price but when you get to the store there are none left. They will sell a few but keep the rest in back so when the sale is over they can restock the shelves and get regular price. I can't even count how many times I show up at a store when the doors open on the day a sale starts and no one else is there and at least 80% of what's on sale has already sold out. HELLO!!!

After being treated like shit at the Best Buy in Northtown Mall, Blaine, MN, I will never purchase another big ticket item from Best Buy again. Micro Center, Ultimate Electronics, Circuit City, ApplianceSmart...anywhere except Best Buy. Best Buy can thank a piece of sh*t manager at the Northtown Mall store in Blaine, MN. I really someone from BB sees this post. Computer restocking fees are BULLSH*T, if I'm exchanging one for another one.

I went to Best Buy after seeing the website ad for a laptop which was loaded for 499.00. Not only did I end up with a different computer, but the Geek Squad was part of the warrenty and they gave the laptop to them to analyze in case of problems. When I got it home, everything was stripped off the computer and replaced with items to be bought, like Spiderman 3 movie and all kinds of spyware and things. I will not ever buy at Best Buy again. To return the laptop, they wanted a 15% restocking fee!! Order the item on line and you will get what you want!! I now own a 600.00 DVD player!!!

It amazes me what Best Buy gets away with. About a month ago, my co-worker bought a new Saturn SUV and took it to Best Buy to get a DVD player put into her car because of her 3 year old...well...I drove her to get her car...and they told her the car was no longer working! They somehow messed with the chip or something in the car and screwed everything up. It took so long for them to pay to get her car fixed. The people they have working for them are total idiots! When I bought my car stereo in there and the speakers blew...I had the warranty and went back to them...and you know what they told me? I need to go to the original store to get it fixed! That's a BS story if i've ever heard one. What if I came from out of state??Do you expect me to drive who knows where to get new speakers? NOPE! All fixed...had to get new wiring..and it happened again because those idiots don't know how to install anything.

Best Buy is a total ripoff, bought a computer and screen on sale, they had to order it since it wasn't in stock, finally picked up the items and got them home just to find they gave me the wrong screen. Took the monitor back and since the sale was over by this time the Manager of the Electronics Dept. charged me $200.00 MORE since the sale was over, and had the balls to laugh when making the exchange. I wanted to B**ch slap this loser. Best Buy should of honored my order and the sale price. This was the last time I ever went into Best Buy, I will go out of my way and spend more somewhere else because I would rather pay more at another store and deal with people who are honest than deal with scam artists. They are the ones that screwed up the order and I ended up paying extra because the sale was over???? BYTE ME!!!

this happens alot in retail, trust me, I used to work for Toys R Us, and usually a couple nights after the store closed before black friday,we were always told to take certain items off the shelf which would amount to several pallets worth of merchandise and put it all in the empty stock trailer or truck,I thought this was rather weird, later on another employee told me that the reason they were doing this is that they didnt want to price match any items that were on sale at Target,Wal-Mart...etc,and we were told to tell customers that we didnt have the merchandise in stock, all the while it was sitting in a trailer that we just put it in the night before,so if you ever go to a Toys r Us looking for that item, chances are when tehy tell you its not in stock, chances are it may somehow miracoulasly "pop up" after the sale is over, and tehy may tell you that we just got a truck in,but the last truck comes before black friday and new ones dont come till around february,a word to the wise...

ok, i rephrase that, I just remembered that we did get in trucks during teh holidays, but what i said about hiding stuff in truck that stands,or if to avoid any legality's "allegedly"...

I was wondering what best buy was up to, I saw a lady behind me had a wii in her cart, said they had a few up front, when I went up there they said I could not purchase it until I came thru the line and if it was still there I could buy it, well I made it to the wii and lo and behold when I went to pay for it...someone had a back door open near the cash register and omg there was a room filled with nintendo wii's, I was pissed. They were putting out one at a time saying it was the laste wii, I think something should be done about it but what.....
MIkeJan 2nd 2008 5:25PM
i work at Circuit city. When we get wii's in they go with in couple hours. it doesnt help that nintindo only sends us about 20 at a time.

I run a gaming website and podcast and was in a conference call with NOA president a few days before Christmas.
Trust me Nintendo is not looking to inflate anything. The president said they have made a POINT of keeping the consoles reasonably priced and would not tolerate any price gouging from any retailer. If any retailer was caught doing so, they have threatened to pull Wiis from them.
I think perhaps Best Buy may be doing some strange things, but they aren't illegal. If they were, they'd have been fined already. What they may have done is lost Nintendo's favor and the favor of the public for unethical behavior, but legally speaking they've done nothing wrong. Just unscrupulous.
