Prince Sues His No. 1 Fans
Two months ago, we told you about Prince suing YouTube, eBay, and BitTorrent site Pirate Bay for enabling the piracy of his music. We suggested, as politely as we possibly could, that perhaps the elfin former superstar should take a lesson from Metallica, salvage some dignity, and try to avoid legal tussles over fans sharing his music.
Well, apparently Prince was listening, but somehow he's found another way to alienate the music aficionados who love him. Instead of suing file sharers, he's now going after his most popular fan sites for posting pictures of him, album art, and lyrics to his songs. Needless to say, this isn't exactly what we had in mind.
Really, this sort of self destructive insanity shouldn't be too shocking, since it comes from a guy whose rider on a recent tour supposedly included dark chocolate, black rooms, an oxygen bar and three sexy girls. Even so, we still can't help but be amazed by the continued audacity of the washed-up funk star.
This time however the fans are fighting back. Prince is already seeing the beginnings of a backlash similar to that which Metallica faced following its decision to sue the users of Napster. Three of the most popular Prince fan sites, Prince.org, Houseqake.com, and Princefams.com have joined forces to create Prince Fans United, an organization dedicated fighting the lawsuits based on the doctrines of fair use and free speech.
These Web sites, along with several others, have "received notices to cease and desist all use of photographs, images, lyrics, album covers and anything linked to Prince's likeness," and been told to provide "substantive details of the means by which you [the fansites] propose to compensate our clients [Paisley Park Enterprises, NPG Records and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG)] for damages..." The demands go as far as mandating that the sites pull down pictures fans have taken of their own tattoos, as well as photos of their Prince-inspired license plates.
Prince Fans United hopes that Prince and his army of lawyers will reconsider, but we figure it's highly unlikely seeing as it's obvious he's lost his damn mind.

Yes, I agree that he has a right to protect his copyrights. I don't agree with suing his fans. Perhaps its for religous reason that he is doing all of this, I don't know. But it is apparent that he is really ticked off about something a lot deeper than this drama.

It's obvious that the music landscape has totally transormed since the creation of the online community. It's not so much the individual sharing of files as the communication and shifting of ideas within groups that really affects things on the whole. IF it didn't nobody would be writing on this site and/or reading its contents.
I agree artists should have some legal recourse as to the ownership of this intellectual property. However, we must also remember that the current contractual landscape gives record companies large amounts of control of this material. Furthermore, artists receive only a very small fraction of the proceeds of any album, depending on the number of points they receive. The income is had in performances, which really can't be replaced by file sharing. The live experience, the real money maker, will always remain just that.
It is distressing when bands such as U2 with massive incomes have the nerve to claim file sharers teal food out of the mouths of their children. It's probably the most inaccurate statement one could make. Real artistry should be judged by the passion of an idnvidual to share their craft with others and connect with peers.
Those who are engaged in these lawsuits are misjudging the newly formed lanscape. If file sharing is illegal it's the content of the file, not the actual file, that is against the law. Therefore, all music vids on YouTube would be illegal as well because you are controllin the music content versus, say MTV. The individual has no contract with the artist or management co. that will compensate the artist. It's really the same principle. Before one becomes a staunch advocate of labeling activities "illegal" they should really take all of these details into consideration.
Sorry this crap is so long.

what a little piss ant. he should be honored that his fans are actually willing to publicly show that they're prince fans, instead of hiding it like they should be doing so the rest of the world doesn't laugh at them. his house needs a good egging to take him down a notch or three.

Even free, I wouldn't want his stuff.

If he wants to sue over piracy of his music okay but the fact that he's going after these websites is ridiculous. These web-sites are non-profit so it's not like these people are making money off of him or taking money from him for that matter. I looked at all three websites and they aren't selling anything.
For all these people that keep saying "you're stealing from him!! he should do this!!!" You do realize that these websites that he's suing aren't making any money off of him..right? As far as I saw there wasn't any music of his to download illegally. It was just pictures and fan commentary or what not.

I love Prince, and my 20 year old daughter is a bigger fan than I am. He is an awesome performer and a super talented musician and songwriter. I personally think he has gone too far. When you turn on the people that adore you, and who appreciate your gifts the most, you've become a legend in your own mind! History seems to show that having immense talent can somehow warp the mind, and make people think they are more important to the world than they really are! Prince, don't charge your fans money to adore you. You'll find that in the end, YOU can't afford it!

Prince was once a strong proponent of the Indies and the likes of youtube. They just should have found a way to better implement it while protecting against bootlegging or piracy.
To all of you who boast of stealing music, i won't report you and i do not think prince will actually do it either; however, somebody should call the FBI on you and trace back your ISP's to your address's, get a warrant, seize your computer's and hand it over to prince to facilitate this action.
Musicians spend an inordinate amount of time, money, and hard work to bring you this entertainment and like any other occupation, we should be rightfully compensated for it.
I seriously wonder how many of my songs you have stolen. You know, i like to eat like the next guy.

I have never liked the midget(Prince) since I died laughing at him in his movie where he played a big bad biker who owned a night club. I could really see s scawny little guy like that in that part. LMAO. He has been washed up for years and I am surprised he still has fans.

I was once a huge Prince fan. His ridiculous antics turned me off years ago. He truly thinks he is some sort of prince instead of an entertainer. I can see looking into the copyright stuff with the music, but attacking fan sites is insanity.

so now here in america a person who produce whatever themselves cant say how his material should be used? it doesnt matter if he gave away some cd's. that was his to do and for promotional use. people do not understand that all of this copying music and movies are very costly to that person and they loose millions of dollars. but all we think about is how can we get their materials for little or nothing and not thinking how our desires cost them. look at the rolling stones, they at their age are still out here entertaining people and doing a good job, so prince is younger than they are, and what does age have to do with what a person feel they can do. age is just a number.

Prince you only had one good song in your whole caree got and that was purple rain and i think you lucky on that one and some one else wrote it for you so why do you want to sue the very people who made you who you are today. besides you can't sue everyone.

I love how people ignore the column and write about whatever they want in the comment section. It is OLD news that prince was suing for copyright infringement of his music. The issue now: suing fan sites for pictures of him and anything related to him; and for posting LYRICS to his music. People who adore him, PAY for his albums, BUY related merchandise, DONATE their own time building websites to worship him and get others into his music, are being sued. It is stupid, plain and simple. If someone put up a website freely advertising a business I owned, I would not sue them for using my business name or practices on the site. If someone who cares about me posted a non-incriminating picture of me on a website, I would not sue them. WAKE UP YOU GODDAMN DOUCHBAG!!!!
FranNov 8th 2007 7:05AM
No matter what you say/post here, do any of you believe this throwback gives a damn what you think? He's got his money and even if a few of you boycot him, he's set for life, barring some unforseen financial disaster. The only way to pay this arrogant grease bag back would be to whack away at his superinflated ego. How? Stop posting, as if you care. Stop posting and stop listening/buying forever. Why would you want to support him after this maneuver? If you do continue to support him, let me know. Then look me up, hand me the $15 instead,...stand back a little, and let me give you a slap in the face too!
