Prince Sues His No. 1 Fans
Two months ago, we told you about Prince suing YouTube, eBay, and BitTorrent site Pirate Bay for enabling the piracy of his music. We suggested, as politely as we possibly could, that perhaps the elfin former superstar should take a lesson from Metallica, salvage some dignity, and try to avoid legal tussles over fans sharing his music.
Well, apparently Prince was listening, but somehow he's found another way to alienate the music aficionados who love him. Instead of suing file sharers, he's now going after his most popular fan sites for posting pictures of him, album art, and lyrics to his songs. Needless to say, this isn't exactly what we had in mind.
Really, this sort of self destructive insanity shouldn't be too shocking, since it comes from a guy whose rider on a recent tour supposedly included dark chocolate, black rooms, an oxygen bar and three sexy girls. Even so, we still can't help but be amazed by the continued audacity of the washed-up funk star.
This time however the fans are fighting back. Prince is already seeing the beginnings of a backlash similar to that which Metallica faced following its decision to sue the users of Napster. Three of the most popular Prince fan sites, Prince.org, Houseqake.com, and Princefams.com have joined forces to create Prince Fans United, an organization dedicated fighting the lawsuits based on the doctrines of fair use and free speech.
These Web sites, along with several others, have "received notices to cease and desist all use of photographs, images, lyrics, album covers and anything linked to Prince's likeness," and been told to provide "substantive details of the means by which you [the fansites] propose to compensate our clients [Paisley Park Enterprises, NPG Records and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG)] for damages..." The demands go as far as mandating that the sites pull down pictures fans have taken of their own tattoos, as well as photos of their Prince-inspired license plates.
Prince Fans United hopes that Prince and his army of lawyers will reconsider, but we figure it's highly unlikely seeing as it's obvious he's lost his damn mind.

He is really getting too old for the type of show he puts on. Isnt he about 50? He is just a little bit creepy and a whole lot full of himself. I think he is just plain sad.

I personally do not give a sweet tweet what kind of issues Prince creates in his lonely world, I still am smitten with him (after 23 years) - and love to hear his music and watch him perform; he is incredible to listen to and delicous to look at. I adore him, always have and always will.

Looking at Prince's past and present.....personally I think the guy is a lunatic. But, this being America, we can sue, sue and sue and then sue some more. Odds of winning aren't in our favour, unless we have a pretty good case to begin with. lol

It looks as though prince has turned into the little "wuss" princess? He should be happy that anyone even wants to listen to his music anymore.

The fans can do what they like with the pictures; they own the copyright. One wonders what sort of legal advice Prince is getting. It's certainly not _good_ legal advice.

Boy I wish I could be sued! I'd immediately file a notice of deposition and make Mr. Prince come. I'd videotape the deposition and post it on Youtube! It'd be great! What more could you ask for?

This guy needs to spend some time without all his millions and get a hold on reality. If not he may as well confirm his "jackson" disease before he has a need to bed down with children and primates.
And let's not forget his nepolean complex...penis the size of a baby gerkin.
Scrtew your fans...screw you crusty.

here's what you do -don't buy his cds, don't attend his concerts, shut down all fan sites, don't pass around his his music, don't play his music. make him a true has-been.
these people, the stars, the lawyers, the riaa, the mpaa, nbc, etc. by making their shows impossible to share with others are making their music/shows unpalatable. I hope stars like him, networks that follow the dame- fail big time.
ellie23239Nov 7th 2007 8:12PM
He has no right to sue the fans; hundreds of famous people have fans that create websites dedicated to them. I should think that for this all this suing, is that he could if he hasn't already lost all respect that anyone had for him. And he should be honored that people would want to dedicate several websites to him. If he didn't want any of his stuff (music, lyrics, pics. etc.) put out there for everyone to see then he shouldn't have started a singing career in the first place. And, frankly, I am appalled at what he is doing.

First of all, Prince is NOT a washed up funk star. He is the greatest rock, and funk star to come our way in the last 25 years, so get your facts straight. Your opinion is just wrong. If Prince chooses to give away his music, that's HIS choice, and has nothing to do with people wanting something for nothing. As a writer,Terrence O'Brien is not fair and balanced, and as a fan of Prince, who has all his music, posters, I resent you attempting to defame a man who has given so much to music, which is why he's been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but I guess you forgot that. Also, if he's so washed up, he wouldn't have been asked to perform at the Super Bowl.

This guy is a super fruit! How he even has fans is beyond me.
lauraNov 8th 2007 9:33AM
He is not suing anyone. The fansites received ceast and desist letters. No lawsuits have been filed.
whalenyankeeNov 7th 2007 8:21PM
A natural progression from all those performers who got ripped off through the ages.
"Rosie" of Rosie and the Originals never made a dime on the song Angel Baby.
"Topaz" never made a dime for writing Help Me Make It Through The Night, while Kris Khristopherson made $millions.
Now that they have been ripped off too much they seem to be a bit litegeous.
Sleepee38Nov 7th 2007 8:27PM
So how about this: we stop giving him all this free, unpirated publicity. You won't find a bigger Prince fan than me, but I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in all this suing here and there. Country music has it right with fan appreciation...and still, I will go dancing this weekend at the local DC Prince party, cuz the music is good! It's the mind and spirit behind it that is suspect.
