Is 'Manhunt 2' the Most Violent Video Game Ever?

Rockstar, maker of the ever popular 'Grand Theft Auto' series, got in on the Halloween action yesterday and released its new ultra violent and extremely controversial title 'Manhunt 2.' After being banned in Britain, twice, a greatly toned down version of the game is seeing the light of day in the US.
In the game you play a patient in a mental institution with some, um... violent tendencies. Some are in fact claiming that 'Manhunt 2' is the most violent video game ever. The Wii version might be the most disturbing, requiring you to pantomime the deadly acts with the motion sensing controller.
Feel a need to rip out a skull with a sickle? Beat a cop to death with a his own night stick? Or perhaps caving in a person's head with a fire extinguisher is more your style. If any of these three things sounds exciting to you, then you are a sick person.
The title is rated 'M' for mature audiences, meaning that no one under the age of 17 can purchase it. However, these rules are easy to circumvent and rarely enforced. We normally don't buy into the dangers of video games mumbo-jumbo, but the idea of small children physically acting out acts of such brutal violence is a little shiver-inducing. Parents may want to be extra vigilant and keep their young away from this title.
What do you think? Is this just over-hyped hysteria about what is essentially a fictional game? Or do you think 'Manhunt 2' has gone too far?

Ok,pianomn623, say I refuse to buy my son the game, then a classmate plays it coninusly for a few months, weapons up & comes to school and kills my son and a few others. Not buying the game for your kids isn't the answer. As parents we have to be responsible for what our children do. Why the hell would ANYONE want their child playing a game like this? Do you really think it has any value at all?

Unfortunately, inept parents use video games as free baby sitters. I play violent video games, watch horror flicks, own multiple firearms, while having a family, holding a professional job, and being a productive member of society. If a video game is turning children violent, then the only ones to blame are parents who aren't teaching their kids right from wrong.

1st off pardon all my spelling errors, 2nd Terrence O'Brien why do you care what people are doing? as a matter of fact what business is
it of yours what anyone is doing or even what video game they are playing? If it's violent or if it's completely stupid and pointless you have no right to judge anyone, if you have children and feel this way then i strongly suggest that you make sure you watch what your child is doing. Other than your own child, if you have one, you do not have any right telling someone what they can and cannot do, there are millions of people that play "violent" videogames everyday and everyday millions of kids are surprisingly not killing each other, saying that people shouldn't be allowed to play violent videogames is such a load of crap, it's an excuse to put the blame on someone else. Terrence people would like you more and find what you say important if you weren't so judgemental, "Feel a need to rip out a skull with a sickle? Beat a cop to death with a his own night stick? Or perhaps caving in a person's head with a fire extinguisher is more your style. If any of these three things sounds exciting to you, then you are a sick person." to be be perfectly honest i laughed when i read this, its very exciting, i want to buy this game now, i didnt even know they made a manhunt 2, manhunt 1 sucked, but the more you tell people not to do something they want to do it more, and i am not a sick person, i work full time and i am also a full time college student. i never killed anyone and the last time i fought someone they deserved to get the hell beat out of them. i've played videogames since i was 6, and theres nothing wrong with me, so before you call someone sick for playing a game you should look at our own government, and see what strings they pull, and look at our troops in iraq and afghanistan, the brutal treatment of the POW's. This world is full of violence and corruption, i am no saint, not claiming that i am or will i ever be, i will be as far from perfect as the next person that reads this, but people should just mind their own business, stop being nosey, and leave everyone alone, stop judging and treat others the way you would want to be treated, this is what pisses people off, when others point fingers in their face for an oppinion, a belief or sum bs reason, everyone needs to just shut the f up, and live your own lives, thankyou for reading my comment.

Violence begates violence. If you take a innocent young fresh mind ,say at the age of 10 and he plays this chit 4 hrs a day ,from what I've seen isnt hard to do. The conquences of this are, thte kid becomes lathargic, overweight, lazy, distracted, impossible to control and because of these things become targets themselves in school, causing animosity towards their peers cause they get bullied cause their fat and lazy and withdrawn.Oh and all they talk about is the violent game they play every day. They have become brainwashed thats how the gov does this kind of thing ,repetitive beating down of your morals or a lack there of and then your off to war.Except in the childs case he gets ahold of daddies gun and goes to school and takes out all the bullies and pretty girls that made fun of him. Ever wonder about all the shootings you people have in your schools down in the USA. Well all of them are purpertrated by kids with violent video game addictions , thats where they learn it. They even dress the part when they go in. So when the next school shooting happens and it will , i hope none of you pro gamers kids are caught up in the crossfire cause your kids deserve better than that. Now all of you bad parents grow up ya here and throw those damn machines out.. Schmoo!!

Its up to the parents to teach their children a strong sense of right and wrong. When they do that, a relatively younger person can play these games and be totally fine, though I do believe that it is a little too desensitizing. I remember playing golden eye 007 when I was like 10 or something, and never once thought about shooting someone. But my parents also taught me about the responsibilities of actions and consequences. Its not the video game that breeds trouble, its the lack of parenting.

I agree with GirlChris. Playing video games does really let frustration and anger out. I think video games really help a lot of people. They certainly help me when I'm mad.
sick-n-tiredNov 2nd 2007 11:43AM
Bottom line is this, if you don't want your kids playing it...don't buy it for them. Video game makers can not be held responsible for inadequate parenting skills. I've played video games my entire life, from the original pong to now. My PARENTS taught me what was right and wrong, not video games. I'm sick of all the "PC" people out there making such a big deal out of ANIMATED violence. Don't we have other things to worry about in this world??? I think i might have heard something about a war but i'm not sure........
JuliaNov 5th 2007 8:24PM
I agree it's up to the parents to watch their kid...but lots of parents DONT. And then stuff like this is out there...Normal kids might be ok but it's gonna affect the already messed up kid who is fantasizing about shooting classmates and torturing animals. Like they need more violence.
RockyNov 2nd 2007 11:45AM
aol is advertising this game and and you say the people that want to play it are sick. Why aren't the people that advertise it sick too. Or do they write your checks?
AliceNov 2nd 2007 11:50AM
Yeah I believe the military uses video games to kind of train soldiers. They actually made these games which requires you to kill people. Everyone keeps saying it's the parent's responsibility to make sure their kids know right from wrong. Well it's also the kid who needs to control themselves. If a child lets these games get to their head then they have a weak mind and need to get some help. And not all school shootings are caused by those people playing violent games. There are other reason like I don't know, those stupid kids who make fun of them for whatever reason. And whoever that was that said those "fat and lazy" kids won't get friends. Well I believe they do. Maybe they find friendships with other people who play games. They could have been loners and now they've met their best friend just by realizing they liked playing video games. That's how I've met a lot of my friends. I've been playing video games since I was little and there's nothing wrong with me.

I think the guy hit the nail right on the head. My friends and I have played Madden since its inception and now were all big time NFL superstars. I going to make sure my son plays all the Tiger Wood's golf games so he can one day become a great golfer. Practice makes perfect right.

When I was a kid, we're talking kindergarten-first grade here I used to play the original Mortal Kombat game religiously. That never affected me at all. I didn't go around pretending I was one of the characters beating someone senseless. I had parents that taught me right from wrong and that video games were just that GAMES, not something you do for real. If your child is mature enough to handle the game and not take it as LITERAL, then by all means by them the game. If your child is still young and impressionable then don't buy them the game. As the parent you are responsible for your child's actions. For me, I am an adult now and honestly, this game looks interesting to me!

just what America needs
MORE VIOLANCE
we dont have enough by now? look around, our prisons are full and we got 2.2 million in them the most than in any western country. OH no, of course it is NOT from these games and the alianition our society is producing. OH NO
lets bring me some more excuses, we are good with them. The Blame Game of OTHERS, ONLY
MarcosNov 2nd 2007 11:57AM
There are so many kids on here posting bad things about the writer. I know you play video games now, but maybe when you grow up and mature a little, then you will understand what he is saying. I personally think that video games like this shouldn't even be allowed to be made. More government control is needed to curb these type of disgusting and gruesome 'entertainment' products.
jjkrenekNov 2nd 2007 11:58AM
I just love how the media is always behind when posting stories about games like this. I suppose when the next Mortal Kombat game comes out or when GTA IV comes out next year, we'll hear about how 'controversial' they are a year or 2 after they're released. The entertainment industry is full of a bunch of idiots. Saw IV was rated R and is playing in basically every theatre, yet if that very same content was in Manhunt 2 it would be banned like it was earlier this year. Those arrogant idiots who thing they can make our entertainment choices themselves think all games are only for kids. Yet we all pretty much play games. Why is it that the stupid are always the one making the decisions?
JoeyNov 2nd 2007 12:06PM
...Most violent video games? LOL!!! Just turn on the TV on any cable network and look at how many shows, crime dramas, even some comedy films usually have Sex and Violence. The blame is soley on the Media...it's plain common sense. If anybody doesn't get it...oh well...you will someday. Movies like "The Devil's Rejects & House of 1000 corpses" are perfect examples of the most Psychopathic freaks. These violent video games will be around as long as TV continues pushing Sex (desperate housewives) and Violence(TV crime dramas and gore movies). There is so much gray area concerning the 1st Amendment, and people have pushed freedom of speech to it's limit...but it's here to stay like it or not.
EANov 2nd 2007 12:01PM
I don't understand the point of this article other than trying to incite a silly argument between two very passionate, if uninformed, groups of people. It does not give any kind of useful information regarding the game and the tone is set to provoke hysteria or denial, depending on your view of it.
I am an avid gamer but do not enjoy games like Manhunt, or Rockstar in general. In particular I feel that Rockstar, by making sensational games like this, is perpetuating a negative stereotype about games and gamers. But it is their choice to make them and they have the freedom to do so in America. Those who don't want to play, won't. Parents of minors should prevent them from accessing them. And as regards the Wii version as a training apparatus for future killers, I'd be more inclined to watch out for the little boys torturing animals in the backyard than the person in front of the game console.
Come on, people, are you going to let AOL get you this riled up?
AndrewNov 2nd 2007 12:03PM
I must say that it's not the game's fault people supposedly are acting out scenes in a game. It's the people themselves.
The people that can't draw the line between fantasy and real life shouldn't buy the game in the first place.
I think that people pinning violence on video games is for covering up other issues (like violence atributed to drugs or gang violence), getting in the limelight, and controling other people.
IsabellaNov 2nd 2007 12:04PM
We have more violent crime than ever before in the World, and I put the blame partially on violent Video games. When you play these games over, and over the person becomes de-sensitized to the violence and gore.Another thing is it gives weak minded people ideas that they would have never come up with themselves
MataykaNov 2nd 2007 12:03PM
It's sad that it is possible to make a profit on something so anti-social. The root of this comes from those parents who do not object to something as immoral or unethical. Parents, check yourselves. Have you said no to enough things. Your job as a parent is to guide, not give whatever a child wants. As a society, and parents, we will be beeter off saying no to more and yes to less.
