Samsung BlackJack II Unveiled -- a Serious iPhone Killer?
The juggernaut of new iPhone-killers continues on a pace with today's official unveiling of the Samsung BlackJack II, which will be out for AT&T by the end of the year. None other than Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer walked his audience through the super-slim smart phone's first public appearance.
The first BlackJack was super-slim and sexy, but ran on that pesky and sometimes glitchy Windows Mobile 5 operating system. The BlackJack II is just as slim and sexy (and comes in two different, two-toned color schemes), but runs on the more powerful and stable Windows Mobile 6.
Compared to the iPhone (and the original BlackJack), the BlackJack II boasts a seriously impressive list of features, including:
- AT&T Video Share, which lets you do live, one-way videoconferencing with other AT&T-Video-Share-enabled phones.
- Built-in GPS and TeleNav GPS Navigator software that can reroute you if you get lost.
- A 2.0 megapixel camera that doubles as a camcorder.
- An RSS Reader
- World-phone high-speed 3G capability (UMTS/HSDPA) for data, downloading, and Web surfing.
- An improved speakerphone.
- Microsoft Direct Push with Outlook Mobile, for faster reception of most types of e-mail (plus over-the-air syncing of contacts, tasks, and calendar appointments).
- XM Radio Mobile (requires $8.99 per month subscription)
- AT&T Mobile Music (direct-to-phone Napster, eMusic, and the like)
- AT&T's TV streaming service.
The BlackJack II -- out by the end of the year for $149.99 (with a two-year AT&T contract) -- is just one of many new smart phones to hit the market, but it's the second major one to include Windows Mobile 6, which we have to say we've been enjoying with the HTC Touch we're testing out. More smart phones will be announced in the days to come, no doubt, from the CTIA conference in San Francisco. We'll keep you posted.
How about you? Would you buy this phone over the iPhone?

I can not imagine anyone not loving the iPhone. It is so easy to use and entertaining when bored, like waiting in dr office etc. it has neat features. I show people my iphone all the time and you can use the satelite and I can see the statue of liberty and people on the ground! along with my house and my car in the driveway and someone in the pool! its cool! i love it. nothing compares to it!

I'm going to bide my time and buy one in 2 years when all the glitches are worked out and they cost $50.

I really enjoy reading the feedback and comments. I'm a bit old fashion myself. I REALLY just want a telephone that can actually allow you to communicate with someone without any disruption. That's all I want. Now if Microsoft, Apple, Alltel, AT&T, Virgin, and others could dance around on stage and claim - OUR PHONES NEVER DROP CALLS, EVER! That's the phone for me. Thanks!

One big advantage I see of the Blackjack II is the ability to send picture and video text messages, like traditional camera phones...something my iPhone isn't capable of and I'm very disappointed about that. When a friend sends me a picture msg, I have to logon to "viewmymessage.com" (an at&t site), type in a newly generated (and unique to each pic msg) username and password before I can view the picture message. Cannot do this while driving!
Otherwise, the iPhone has more pro's than con's.

Iphone, Blackberry, they all cost too much. I need a phone, not a bunch of fancy gadgets that break down. They all cost too much. If you have one of these and don't use it for business, you definitely have more money than sense.

I had a blackjack for a year, and I just traded it in for my iPhone last month. I think the Blackjack has some features that are better such as outlook integration, MMS texting, and being able to SMS text multiple people at once.
The iPhone does allow Outlook integration but it's not as friendly as the blackjack.
That being said, there will be a software download for the iPhone soon that will include the video camera and other things. I do like both phones and yes the Blackjack has some better features than the iPhone.
But after all that, I wouldn't trade my iPhone for any other phone on the market right now. The things I love about the phone totally outweigh the things I don't like. And it will only get better as more updates come through iTunes!

All this is greed, coming out with something new so that people will want to go out and buy it. Then they'll come up with something new as you can't keep up with the technology. You do know that music will be coming out in little USB clips. It'll now mean that you'll have to replace your entire music library on USB clips. No wonder the average American is $9,000 in debt on their credit card. Can't they see that it's a waste of time. I'm the only one at work who owns a home. Yes, I have a Honda Accord that is over five years old. It still runs fine. I have a normal computer and a phone at home. Meanwhile, my co-workers either ride the bus and don't own a home. They can't afford to with all the new technological stuff that they own and all their gadget spending. They ask me how can you afford to own a home. Some people are like sheep being led to spend on needless things.

I've had my i Phone for about 1 month and I have to tell you, it's amazing. It's all I need. if there was one thing I would add it would be satellite rdaio. Then It would be perfect world. I wouldn't mind paying the additional 9 bucks. There's times I would like to listen to a football game or radio and not have to carry anything but my i Phone. It surprises me Steve Jobs didn't think of that.

I've owned both blackjack and iphone. Depending on your use, each phone serves its purpose. For the simpleminded, the iphone is definitely the catch. However, for those who can handle and make use of the high powered 3g speeds. Taking pictures and txt msging, its all about 3g. Frankly my iphone couldn't keep up with me. Neither could my original blackjack. I'd type faster than the stupid apple could recognize. Also the features on the apple are so limited and Edge internet speeds were soo annoying. I had to take a deep breath in order for me to not take out the frustration with the phone.
Overall, apple does a better job selling its products for the simpleminded. Frankly, its all in the presentation for most ppl. But the reality is, where functionality meets performance depends on the user. Personally if iphone is the best phone in the market so far, then I wouldn't be interested in buying another. So I'm looking forward to iphone killers, because the functions and most importantly, performance on the iphone are not worth the price.

I see everyone talking about the gadgetry. I need reliable, go anywhere communication and the carrier is the answer. As long as I stick with Verizon I know I can reach out and communicate. No matter where I may be. If I am so far out in the boonies that there is no digital, my phone autmatically switches to analog and customer service is the best.

Blackjack and iphone are great phones but both serves different needs. The Blackjack is more for business people and the iphone is more for kids. So the main thing is, if you need a business phone, get the Blackjack. If you need a musical phone, get the iphone (Blackjack can do the same thing with it's Windows Media Player 10). Let's just say, the Blackjack can do almost anything the iphone can, but without the "Touch screen." For the iphone, not even close.
Blackjack = mini-pc/phone
iphone = ipod/phone

I have played with both quite a bit I have several friends that have them. I agree with the comments that they are completely different types of phones for different people each one has it's advantages.
I have an upgrade com from AT&T so I am going to get the BlackJack II for $75 after rebate then I will wait and get the iPhone next summer, when they are saying the new version is coming out and it will have what the current one is lacking.
It is supposed to have 3G in a statement from Steve Jobs and the head of AT&T, stereo bluetooth GPS third party apps I don't understand why most of these were not on the first version except 3G was a power issue with the chipset which I understand they have solved, but Bluetooth Stereo why would they release what some say is one of the best portable multimedia ever with out it when you can get $50 phones that have it.
I am not bashing the phone I just don't understand it but I will be getting one when the new improved version comes out rumored in May or June.

gotta say really disapointed with the iPhone the txting is just horrible nor really revolutionary as everyone says wait what's that phone called again oh yeah the LG prada I don't even own an ipod I own a emac which I like osx but I just hate that you have to have apple hardware which everyone one will claim it's the best and most advanced hardware out there.. then why are they using intell chips now? hmmm.. either way the iphone is a good phone just not as hyped as everyone makes it out to be me I went back to Palm OS without windows mobile windows mobile is ok but to slow and lack of 3rd party support atleast with my palm OS I can watch avi files and opera mini is perfect for web browsing.

Both phones are really nice! And they both have their pros and cons. I currently have the blackjack 1, but I am going to get the blackjack 2. Who knows... I may even buy both!! The thing I really dislike about the iPhone is it isn't 3G! And I find it hard to txt.
