Is MySpace's "Tom" Lying About His Age?
Despite efforts to replace him, MySpace's Tom is still the most popular and most default friend on the ridiculously popular social networking site. Tom is, of course, Tom Anderson, the creator of the site, whose profile lists him as 32 years old. However, in what may be the most glaring example of why you shouldn't trust a thing you see on MySpace, (or online in general), reports are surfacing that Tom may be as old as 40.His Wikipedia page echoes the 32 age, stating his birthday as October 13, 1975, and his undergraduate date from U.C. Berkeley of 1998 seems to jive with that. But apparently Julia Angwin, a writer for the Wall Street Journal, is working on a book that uncovers, among many other juicy items, Anderson's real age to be 40.
We can't wait to read that book, but in the meantime, we were able to get some confirmation on Anderson's age discrepancy from some industrious online bloggers. It turns out that an unnamed "senior person" at MySpace confirmed to TechCrunch that Tom is really "36 or 37." Why lie, and why continue the lie for so long? (Tom's birthday on the site hasn't changed since 2003.) And, is this a big deal?
Well, lying about your age isn't exactly a felony, especially for a Californian, but it is kind of creepy, especially when you've got a bunch of kids wanting to be your friend.
What do you think? If Tom Anderson is lying about his age, is it a big deal?

So what if Tom is just a few years older, than what it says. Tom doesn't seem to be doing anything wrong on myspace why don't these people worry more about the perverts and sickos on myspace, than the real age of Tom. Don't think anyone has ever had a bad encounter with Tom. Get real.

im not gonna loose sleep over tom? seems like when he 1st came out everyone was all over him. there are other things in the world to worry about instead of tom. lets focus on more important things.

I think that Chris Crocker should do a video on this "Leave Tom Alone" Tom is cool!!

In my opinion it doesn't matter how old Tom is and of course lots of kids want him for a friend.
He is there for technical advise and problems.
Tom is everybody's friend. Most of the people on My Space don't have their real age anyway.
TOM IF YOUR READING THIS YOU SHOULD BE FLATTERED that Julia Angwin who writes for the Wall Street Journal is putting together a book of juicey tidbits,,,,,,,but Tom don't be too anxious about the release of the book if your age is going to be her HOT TOPIC, BUT that's why she has a real job. Have to look her up perhaps she has a recipe column for some new and unusual Halloween Treats!

Are you newspeople for real? There are fires blazing out of control in California and all you people are worried about is whether the creator of Myspace is really 32. Give us all a break and go back to school and learn another trade!!!

Is ageism alive and well? Probably, when you consider our society wherein
a person is considered increasingly irrelevant once past 29 years of age. I wouldn't blame Tom considering the sad realities. People are seen more like seafood than fine wine......fresh and new is what counts. Small wonder people are tempted to lie about their age...especially when they are over thirty and still FEEL relevant. Imagine that? We aren't calendars, and we all age physically and emotionally at different rates. We are conditioned to believe that there is some huge difference between twenty-nine and forty.....an imaginary chasm we can't always locate when we actually TURN forty.

Who cares there are more important things in the world to worry about a creator of one of the most popular website lying about his age there are child molesters, rapist and killers out there to worry about than someone who lied about his age on a website get a life and talk about the issues that is needed to be heard than writing this garbage your boss must be proud of this stupidness you wrote.
daoneremmidyOct 23rd 2007 11:17PM
who cares what his age is, why not focus on the hatred and prejudice and racism, along with the price of gas and oh how about our president sending, our children to war to die ,, i've just given you a few topics to report back to us about, that we'd love to get answers to.. how about that. god bless and leave tom alone get a life...

Let's get to something more important, like who is he having sex with, or was he ever married to Pamela Anderson...what color is his toilet paper?
TedOct 23rd 2007 9:16PM
The real question is...was he ever married to Pamela Anderson? Come on...get real. Who cares?

"Well, lying about your age isn't exactly a felony, especially for a Californian, but it is kind of creepy, especially when you've got a bunch of kids wanting to be your friend."
Is 32 that much different than 40, when comparing it to "a bunch of kids wanting to be your friend"??? What exactly are you trying to hint at in this "article"??? WHO CARES how old he is?
westrajOct 23rd 2007 9:33PM
So what, check the chatrooms, everybody is 20 years younger than they really are, in the usa if you are not young, you are nothing.
KatherineOct 23rd 2007 8:59PM
Personally and each of us are intitled to our own opinions; but I feel that most of the sites such as MySpace.com and CraigsList among many others are merely sites where sexual pervs seek out unsuspecting children and prostitution. The officials (FEDS) should do more extensive investigations and crack down on this before it's too late. I know young children who have posted on MySpace as young as 12 and younger who are stating they are older as in 14, 15, 16 years old with pictures which are provocative. Where are the parents? What moral values are you instilling in your children and do you have any yourself? Think about it!

Is this really a story? Tom's 40, Tom's 25...who cares. Did this writer, who probably got his degree from a good college, really have nothing else to offer. He went up to his editor and said "hot story, Tom from Myspace may not be 32!" And then the editor said "Oh my goodness. This is the story of the century! You are a genius, and will get the Pulitzer for this one! Good work Joe", then the writer said "Hey, my names Tim" and then the editor said "Who cares, just write the sotry already." Then, at that moment, a single tear rolls down the writers cheek. He has learned a valuable lesson today. Stop writing about BS, and go write about a real story, like the 23rd annual Suffolk county chilie cookoff and jamboree!

it is important to find out if he is indeed lying...if he lies about his age, then what else is he lying about his business. never trust anyone who is a liar. and myspace is no longer for "kids"....i now see tons of "seasoned" people, such as myself on myspace. anyway, i would never trust myspace if tom lies about his age...jackie trudel-lane
AOct 23rd 2007 9:15PM
a. who cares if he lied.
b. where is the proof that he did, if he did at all.
c. Tom does not have millions of kids wanting to be his friend. Tom is automatically the friend of anyone who makes an account on the site and you can delete him.
MOct 23rd 2007 9:15PM
Is there really that big of a difference between his age of 32 and 40? Isnt it still "kinda creepy" if he's 32 and "kids are wanting to be his friend"?
