it took me until the third spin to realize what he was talking about because it appeared as a hollow mask to me...very cool once your brain adapts
StashkoLoveOct 18th 2007 7:31PM
when i watched this i noticed that it wasnt actually what it looked to be... when the colored side of the head came up, it was light outside but when the back of the mask came around, it got dark outside, and once again when the mask spun around, the colored side showed again with a lighted backround. i enjoyed watching it anyway =]

Wow! The mask of Charlie Chaplin is amazing...what a way to trick the brain!
Lila RichmanOct 18th 2007 7:41PM
Wow! This one was amazing in how it tricks the brain! I could swear the nose was concave in both illusions.

so thats how the ships painted on the wall at my mall always look like they are coming at you no matter how you look at them! you can follow the front of those ships from any direction, even if they are facing away from you

Has anyone heard of the optical illusion political poster in the 60's call "The Black Eye"
I have never seen anything to rival that one. Ever!
KMPOct 27th 2007 9:21PM
I did not really see the illusion until the very last turn of the mask. It just looked like a mask spinning slowly around. The depth showed up, as I said, in the last turn.

The darker and lighter background is probably due to the focusing lens of the camera. Camera usually automatically readjust its lighting contrast depending on the image. Therefore, when the hollow inside of the mask reflected the light brightly at the camera, much brighter than the front end of the mask have been, the camera is re-adjusting the eye to allow less light in (so that the bright mask don't show up as a harsh light and become unclear), therefore toning down the lightness. In doing so, it has focused the lightened hallow of the mask, but in the mean time also darkened the background since it is focusing less light from the entire field.
To those who think the video might have been spliced, that is why the background changes.
The specific lighted angle is very important for this illusion to work, and this illusion only shows up on film and not in real life because of the sensitive lighting contrasts. The camera has adjusted the lighting contrast for you to be able to see it.

WOW ive seen this at the Mount Vernon Museum! Just alot bigger! And no, the light does not effect it and you dont need to do the digital crap! They did it with George Washington's face at the museum. The face is always looking at you!

have you ever been to the haunted mansion at disneyland? when you're inside waiting in line, there are busts in the hall like this; they're hallow but they look like regular busts.

This one I loved, loved, loved it!!! Can't put into words what I would like to say. The human body - amazing in every way!
Makes me think about God, He has a sense of humor, and makes me wonder what other wonders are there, that we have not understood, or been able to see yet, you know?

Notice, though, how they change the lighting when the back of the mask comes around. Still pretty cool, but I say they cheated.
C.P.Nov 23rd 2007 6:33PM
There is no trickery here. Your brain interprets the picture as convex; listen to the very scientific explanation. There is no lighting trick or any kind of trick photography; it is your brain translating what you are really seeing into something logical for you. THERE IS NO TRICK, I promise.
djtenaciousd1Nov 23rd 2007 8:04PM
It is hollow and it is real. Like many have stated, the light dims when the inside of the mask is facing the screen. And the stick that is holding the mask moves to the left a little when the inside is facing the screen then moves back. The video slows down a little at this time too. All of these things combined create the "illusion ".
