Artists Ditching Record Labels, Offering Music for Free Online

British pop rock stars and Beatles worshipers Oasis recently parted ways with their record label. The band has already announced that their next single, 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down,' will be available only as a digital download for 99 pence.
Jamiroquai and Madness are also rumored to be following in Radiohead's footsteps, offering their next albums for free (or cheap) directly to their fans. Meanwhile, The Charlatans have powered their comeback in part by offering their new album for free through the website for XFM Radio.
Last, but certainly not least, yesterday Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails fame, announced that he had left his record company behind and was looking forward to bringing his music direct to his audience. He gave no specific plans, but did say he would announce details soon about 2008. He then summed up our feelings about the whole situation quite well -- "exciting times, indeed."

ALL of these bands have done quite well using the resources of record companies to build their following. To turn around and give away new releases as though they are some indie, no-name band is a joke. They don't need the money from record sales- most bands do.

I'm an Artist who never had any kind of record company deals, marketing, or development. I've been running my own record company since 2003. I cant believe people will not pay $1.00 for 1 song. Amazing! You don't have to buy the whole record, cd, or even cassette nowadays. You buy what you like and put it on your IPOD or MP3 player. I'm down with letting people listen to my music all day long on myspace. It's basically like a radio station. If I made a record for free No cost to me and my company i will give it away for free. But when there's an expense those expenses have to be recouped. When I sell a Million copies you better believe I'll be so happy jumping for joy i'll give away everything. Well not everything..Just the music. lol

Kudos to these bands who are leaving their record labels behind. Cut out the middle man. I'm all for paying .99 or even a buck for a song I want.....so long as the money goes to THE ARTIST, and not forty other people who sat around with their thumbs up their @$$. It's time we stopped giving money to people simply because they have a "big record label name". *Rolls Eyes*
I, for one, look forward to more bands jumping on this "band"wagon.
