LG and Verizon Take On the iPhone
Today, Verizon unveiled its new fall lineup of phones, the highlight of which, the LG Voyager, takes aim squarely at the iPhone. Sure, it's a dead ringer for Apple's Jesus phone, but it's those similarities as well as some significant differences that make the Voyager a suitable alternative to Apple's handset -- at least for those of us Verizon customers not interested in jumping ship for AT&T.
The similarities between the phones don't end with the slick black case. They both have a 2 megapixel camera in common as well as a touch screen, which on the Voyager, runs the slickest, most user-friendly interface we've ever seen on a Verizon or LG handset (it's actually based on the one used for the LG Prada Phone). Of course, there's e-mail and text messaging like there is on the iPhone.
It's what the Voyager does differently that's got us excited. First of all, it runs on Verizon's high-speed EV-DO network, which is significantly speedier than the AT&T EDGE network the iPhone is chained to. Voyager also has GPS, which is lacking on the iPhone. It doesn't have a hard drive like iPhone does, but it does have a slot for a microSDHC card, which currently top out at 8 gigabytes but will soon be achieving capacities of up to 32 gigabytes.
Lastly, the Voyager is actually clamshell phone, hiding a second (giant) screen and full QWERTY keyboard under it exterior. Our pals at Engadget Mobile got their hands on the Voyager this morning, and while they say the Voyager is a bit meaty in size, they're equally as impressed with it as we are. No price has been announced, but expect to see the Voyager in stores around Thanksgiving.
In addition to the Voyager, Verizon announced that is will carry the BlackBerry Pearl -- no different than what you get from other providers -- and the Samsung Juke, which is positioned as an entry-level music phone with its click wheel and 2 gigabytes of built-in storage.
There's also a second LG phone, the Venus, which puts an interesting spin on the touch screen craze –- whether good or bad remains to be seen. The screen is actually split into two parts, and only the bottom half is a touch screen. The top half is your standard cell phone screen, the content/context of which changes the buttons displayed on the lower half.

I love LG phones. I had my first cellphone for a month and a half before it died. I bought an used LG phone and I have had it for over two years. As for those mothers' daughters with the defunct phones, you might want to look to overuse by the kids. No system is built for continuous use. Honestly people you might want to invest in some other hobby if all you have time to do is play with your crappy-service cell phone that cost more than my rent payment.

I agree with James about the need for global phones. I managed to get a Motorola A840 early in '06, then they stopped carrying it. It's lasted because I only use it overseas, I use an LG when I'm stateside with no problems. My husband loves his LGVX8300 and he's a mechanic, very tough on his phone. It was inexpensive and relatively durable. I would still wait and see whether it's worth the price, because I haven't had a phone that I could truly abuse since my old bulky Nokia. Either way, there's no way we would leave Verizon for AT&T, we've had great customer service since 2002.

Verizon is a rip off theytook a bill for I phone they said they never received and charged me $500 dollars for it. I had proof I sent it back Fed Ex and they refused to credit my account. It toot 1 year and a half to get the credit that was after they tacked on 1700 dollars of late fees and cancelation fees. Verizon can take a flying leap. They stole from me my credit rating and took away things I could have provided my 3 children. The youngest being Multiple special needs

For you misinformed people out there...the LG Prada was produced before the Iphone, so if anything Apple copied the Prada. Moving on, this will be a good competitor to the Iphone. I have Verizon now and I'm glad they will be carrying this phone. I'm not a Verizon fangirl or whatever, but I've never had any problems with their service. And I'm also a fan of Apple. In fact I'm posting this comment on my MacBook which I totally love. But for me to switch carriers, it's going to take a lot more than just a phone. Quality of service is most important to me and Verizon is a the top IMHO. By the way, these are just phones people, so just relax.

Warning do not buy anything Verizon I rather shell out money at sprnt. I changed my sprint service based on my job and I'll tell you I am highly dissapointed. I could care less about evo do whatever that even sucks as it is slower than sprint. Like one person said dont go rushing to buy it because Steve Jobs always has something up his sleve. New probably by next year and probably with other carriers.

Wrong. LG does not mean, low grade quality. My LG phone is of superior quality and it has a built in camera and other excellent features not found on iphone. However when Verizon came up with its own version of 'iphone', my next upgrade will send AT&T reeling with jealousy and envy. Iphone will be no match for the Verizon's LC version of iphone. Verizon is superior to the low grade, inferior AT&T/Cingular junkyard jingle. Apple should have not assigned itself to the junkie AT&T/ Cingular crap.

I'm one of the few I suppose that thing LG phones are sturdy - or at least my enV phone is. I've dropped that thing HARD so many times but the thing keeps on ticking. I've been excited about this news all day and told several of my friends. I'll be sure to upgrade come Thanksgiving weekend providing the 32GB-capable version is available. I'll gladly wait several more months for 32GB if not available yet.

Keith Thompson is an idiot. The reason is broke twice is because it was the Chocolate. Try any other LG phone and it lasts forever.
KimOct 12th 2007 10:22PM
I like how everyone is calling LG and Verizon copy cats. If anyone of you actually follow technology and future releases of phones then you would know that this phone and the prada has been in the making for as long as the iphone; and yes the chocolate is not a great phone but it has outsold the number of Iphones sold in this country. I think it is a very good marketing plan to come out with a phone like this closer to Christmas than in the middle of summer when everyone is spending their hard earned money on vacations as opposed to phones. For the record every phone other than the chocolate that has been made by LG is amazing especially on the Verizon network. Happy hunting and I hope some of you can find some form of a positive outlook on life.

We have 3 Chocolate phones for a year now and haven't had one single problem with them. I have dropped mine at least 5 times onto the sidewalk and it looks great and works great too.

People who claim Verizon gives better service give me laughing fits. They obviously believe every ad they see or taek comfort in an uninformed choice. I've used Verizon service in four cities, AT&T in six and in every case, AT&T was the better choice with stronger voice quality and better reception.
This sad LG phone is supposed to be an iPhone killer? Ha! Only if the person using it has a loaded gun and a steady aim.
Nate M.Oct 4th 2007 1:06AM
Just because the iPhone has a touch screen and looks cool, doesn't mean it has "breakthrough features." In fact it is quite inferior to most phones on the market in terms of features. Just look at Helio's Ocean and all the things it can do that the iPhone can't. Even what iPhone does, it doesn't do well, for example its data rate is slow and it can't access all email clients nor any instant messengers. For all its emphasis on pictures, you can't even send a picture message with it. Go to my myspace page www.myspace.com/Latenate420 and read my blog to see more examples of what it can't do. You can also read it at my other page http://stinkywap.funformobile.com, click on Journal on the top. While you're there you can download all the wallpapers and tones I've uploaded for free too.
In response to guesswho22102, who says:
As always, Apple shows its sheer dominance in the technology industry because LG and verizon have to mimic the iphones breakthrough features with this pathetic phone. This phone or any other imitation will never be able to compete with the quality of products that comes out of the Apple factory every year. Great job Mr. Jobs :>

Dude are freaking serious. You say this phone dont do that much compared to a iphone. Lets see, 3g, expandable memory, removable battery, media flo which is live tv at 30fps, vz navigator, real and virtual keyboard. Showed i go on, i could but i dont want to make you guys feel like you wasted 600 dollars (but u did0

Ok let me start off by saying that AT&T is one of if not the worst carriers to be with!! Verizon is by far the best!! AT&T has the worst customer service out there (aside from Sprint-But then again why even consider them a carrier much less competition). I have been with Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile and VZW is by far the best in every way possible!! Also LG is an awesome Manufacturer - read the consumer reports - Much better than Motorola or Apple which is nothing but a total rip off!! Also for you people that seem to be out of the loop, Apple went to VZW to carrier the Iphone 1st and VZW turned them down (AT&T was a last resort) due to the lack of everything!! The chocolate did have a lot of problems thats why it was redesigned, which by the way the new chocolate is awesome!! For those of you AT&T customer switch to a carrier that actually is worth the money (being that AT&T and VZW are the exact same price) and for you Iphone lovers keep telling yourself its that great to justify the price you paid for that slow paper weight!!

LG phones - LG products as a whole seem fine. The Chocolate is a nightmare. I would avoid it at ALL costs. No one I know has had good luck with it. My youngest has had an LG clamshell phone for nearly 2 years (a lifetime to a teen!) and hasn't had a problem at all. I have the LG stainless steel and haven't had a problem either. Everyone has a dud now and then - for LG - that would be a the Chocolate!

Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who calls the Voyager an "iPhone ripoff" needs to be shot. I'm absoulty serious. They are just apple fanboys who don't realize that the Voyager's interface is based off the Prada which LG introduced well before the iPhone. I'm also sick of every bit of media coverage instantly comparing the 2. The only things they have in common are they have touchscreens and 2MP cameras.
Also, I have a chocolate and its always worked fine for me.
PaulOct 8th 2007 1:11PM
The LG Chocolate phone is a piece of junk. Way to light weight feels cheap in the hand(pretty easy way to see if its going to last{should I really buy this} IF IT FEELS CHEAP LIKE A TOY IN YOUR HAND IT PROBABLY IS CHEAP, LIKE THE CHOCALTE IS!.Do some checking before you buy! The LGnV is great. No problems had it a year and a half. No way I would switch it for an i-phone!
