A group of researchers at the Urban Institute, a Washington-based organization, have released a
study (PDF) that links a rise in robbery to the popularity of iPods. The authors readily admit that "rigorous empirical tests" are just not possible for the two year rise in crime. The theory is based around a series of three observations:
- First, the increase in robbery has been disproportionately large compared with burglary and theft.
- Second, the increase in robbery is greatest among juveniles, with whom iPods are most popular.
- Third, the increased rate of robberies was particularly pronounced from 2004-2006, right when the iPods came to market and catapulted towards ubiquity.
The researchers also proposed a number of reasons why the iPod may be particularly susceptible to robbery. For instnace, iPods can not only be resold but they can also bereused after being stolen. What's more, no subscription is required as it is with a cell phone. Also, wearing an iPod makes a person a target since he is distracted less aware of his surroundings.

I have to agree with Mr. O'Brien. Just last week 3 Young Adults were robbed of their I-pods here in chicago ages ranging 20-23 and it happened is dimly lit areas of the city. So that really brings up the question:"Should one wear an I-pod in high-crime areas that are dimly lit? Even when there appears to be no one around? tell me what you guys think.

And when the Bulls Jackets were big they caused an increase in crime. Same as with Nike when Jordan and Johnson made them huge. Really people......look at the facts....any time something NEW and COOL and PORTABLE comes out.....there is a rise in crimes involving the theft of said object. All I can say is so far no one has been killed over an iPod

In fact, an iPod Nano was credited with saving a soldier's life in Iraq. The bullet, which was stopped by the Nano in the soldier's chest pocket, would have most likely pierced the heart killing the soldier nearly immediately.

"All I can say is so far no one has been killed over an iPod"
Actually, yes they have. A young boy in NYC was killed not handing over his iPod, back in 2002.
But to say that the iPod is "responsible" for a rise in crime is ridiculous. It's like saying cell phone usage will cause hemmoroids.

These juvenile robberies are more directly related to poor parenting than Ipods. We have large communities of youth who live in single parent homes with little to no supervision or direction. Ipods are just the item of today. This problem is going to continue until certain groups take more reponsibility for their communities. All the children in my community have these items, and I never hear about a robbery.

Which groups are you referring to Garry? Just because you don't hear about it in your "community", does not mean its not happening. People are so quick to put labels on other people when stories like this come out. Hell, your kids could be the very ones doing it.

I plan to buy an iPod but when I do, I don't plan to flaunt it in public. I plan to use it doing my workout with my personal trainer. And, when I'm home and just want to listen to music. I plan to be safe while using my iPod and avoid being robbed for it.

my daughter got hers stolen from school. not only was it stolen but her whole purse was. neither the school nor apple really care about the crime. does apple really freeze the ipod from being used again? why does the school npot care even if they have camera in the building. bet if it was a teachers they would care! bet if it was a staff they would care! why spend that kind of money on a item with a serial number on it, for it to be vanished without a trace. but the minute you plug it into your computer its found. apple and schools don't care.
