Google Earth Uncovers Swastika-Shaped Government Building
Google Earth's omnipotent eye on existence has wrought many wonderful, strange and sometimes creepy discoveries. Giant bugs, Oprah tributes and even nude sunbathers have all been caught by the all-knowing, all-seeing Google-y eye.
And what do we spy here? No, that's not the international headquarters of a white supremacy group -- but good guess. Believe it or not, this swastika-shaped building complex is a U.S. Naval barracks in Coronado, California. The buildings were built in the 1960s but, according to the Navy, their sinister configuration wasn't discovered until the construction project had already broken ground -- which was apparently too late to do the decent thing and modify the designs a bit. But that's beside the point, anyway. Are we to believe that not a single person involved in a construction project for the U.S. Navy ever looked at a set of blueprints? Is it also just a coincidence that the buildings sit at the intersection of Tulagi and Bougainville -- two streets named after famous WWII battles?
Whew. Let's reel in the paranoia a bit.
According to a report by CBS's San Diego affiliate, News 8, architect John Mock still stands behind the design of the buildings, which he insists were never meant to look like a swastika and for which he actually won an award. Nonetheless, change is on the way thanks in large part to Missouri-based radio host Dave vonKleist, who has been vocal about the structure since he first stumbled upon it in Google Earth in 2006. Today brings word that the Navy is finally relenting to vonKleist's calls to action and intends to spend upwards of $600,000 to camouflage the structure with landscaping, walkways and solar cells, all of which will hide the offending shape from aerial views.
For some seriously haunting conspiracy theory surrounding the Coronado barracks (including parallels drawn to 9/11), read the full News 8 report.

well, it's just a freakin symbol. It used to represent something good before the Nazis ruined it. I wouldnt really give a damn whether they change it or not, cause it's just a pointless mistake, it's not like this is deadly and dangerous, and seriously, if u r sensitive about something as small as a shape-mistake, then i dont know how u r gonna be able to handle real life. I agree that the money should be spent on something that actually matters, not a pointless shape or symbol.
DreolinSep 26th 2007 7:08PM
I can understand the desire to change this building, and something should be done, but the amount of money they are planning to use for the changes...couldn't that money be better spent actually helping people? Is there not a cheaper way to make changes?
necrogodomegaSep 26th 2007 7:42PM
*sigh* You know this was once a symbol for God and protection until the Nazi government used it. It's actually still common to see in China and India which have very old, and large Buddist communities.

I've seen photos of a swastika-shaped forest that was planted in Germany in the Thirties. Took until now to show up.
AstroWarpedSep 26th 2007 8:26PM
They Should just leave the barracks alone as is.
That symbol was used long before the Nazis took it to signify them.
Prior to the Nazis using it, it was used as a
symbol of Good Luck by Christians!
Heck, Look at Star Wars, Emperor Palpatine took the Symbol representing the Old Republic & then
used it for his Empire Regime!!!

oh come on spend more money to try and not offend someone....eff that....the builder didn't mean for it to be offensive, and being in the radio business, I am ashamed that the radio host that brought this up is mad....it is crazy
HavocSep 26th 2007 11:34PM
Ohh, give me a freaking break. Come-on folks, it is a building for crying out loud. Its not like 100,000 are standing in front of this building worshipping it, or that every white supremcy member has a picture of this building in their house. We have become worse than Arab nations that won't buy anything that has the something that resembles the Star of David symbol. Think about that, and for those of you with a 6 lug pattern, you are driving a vehicle offensive to Arabs because it resembles the Star of David. Pretty soon we will be outlawing circles because they are offensive to squares. Learn some reasonable tolerance and recognize that not everything out there is meant to harm your sensibilites.
steveSep 27th 2007 1:35AM
Yeah this is pathetic that someone brought this up. In context the building looks like it was designed to give view from every room and to maximize square footage without destroying all the green space on the property. It isn't even perfect in shape. The L-wings of the building are different. They are not all the same. And to top it all off, the center is lower than the rest of the building. This is just an attempt by someone to try and stir up controversy. It is sad. I will be damned if I am going to work my life around everyone else so they don't get offended. But that is what the world is coming to. You can't say this because it bothers that person. You can draw this because it bothers them. What happened to tolerance. It has become "I will be tolerant, until you do something I don't like."

As good citizens of the United States of Israel you should know that Uncle Samuel will not tolerate such offences.
awyagawaSep 27th 2007 8:32AM
Completely hysterical to want to change the view from above. Who is offended, the birds? Obviously this was not meant to be a Swatiska. 1) The Nazi Swastika is set at an angle 2) The Swastika itself was borrowed from older cross designs. Hitler may have seen an earlier cross on a the structure of an old religious group. The "bent cross" was a widget in designs on items such as postcards, prior to the Nazis. The Buddhists have a similar cross pre-dating Hitler by at least 1000 years. American Native peoples had this cross as a symbol of "the four winds" pre-dating the European invasion. Its just an unfortunate co-incidence.

"As good citizens of the United States of Israel you should know that Uncle Samuel will not tolerate such offences."
Reading satire, is such be the case here, unless in the hands of a skilled author, most often falls flat and "reads" as racism. And I am being kind regarding the quoted statement, because I am a Christian.

i have never responded to one of these before but i must, people are just looking to inflame one another with sheer stupidity now
only one other commentor got it
the swastika is an ancient symbol
i am a quilter and this symbol existed long before hitler and his insanity
my family are holocaust survivors and i am not offended by a building
i would be offended if someone used this google earth photo to spend millions of dollars that could go towards solving some very real problems that can be seen right here on earth without the use of the "skycam"
KristaOct 9th 2007 2:07PM
I can understand the problems that people are having with this building although I am going to point out something that my Sociology teacher told us yesterday. He said if you look at the picture from not so close up, there appears to be two buildings right behind the "swastika building". These buildings seem as though they are in the shape of fighter planes going after the swastika. What a tribute to the numerous military men and women who gave their lives "going after the swastika". Anyways, just thought it was interesting to give a different look at the whole thing.

Why get upset over a building designed four decades ago? Ludicrous, I can't believe it's intended design was meant to portray homage to Nazism. Perhaps it was designed as an ancient
"symbol for God and protection".
This is another example of liberal conspiracy zelots who feel that anything might be offensive if its viewed politically incorrect.
Furthermore, and begging indulgance from the debate of a swastika shape building, I have to regress to equivalence in current issues challenging America's past and future.
Wake Up! Spending tax dollars to erase artifacts odious to the few is becoming a common practice in our government. The 600K remediation plan for this project is only a drop in a bucket.
The US Park Service is currently spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to remove all reference to GOD on all US building & monuments. (i.e. Washington Monument and lots more).
Why? - When they were placed there by our founding fathers for a very valid reason!
Look at a Scary parallel: We are fighing the Taliban in Afghanistan whose religious fantasicm destroyed all artifacts viewed offensive to their cause and which dictated blind obedience;
And we as Americans now stand blindly and idlly by as our government destroys all refence to GOD on our public buildings, in classrooms, and the very fabric of our culture.
Forget Christmas! they want it to be called Winter Celebration or some other nonsense. Even, Santa Claus has to loose weight; and can't say 'Ho-Ho-Ho' because of insinuation to a street walker.
Current day Mad-Men bad guys are breaching the fabric of democracy while the silent majority among us stands mute!
Who and what group in America is demanding blind obedience to what cause - because reference to GOD is offensive to their cause?
Even Nero played his fiddle while Rome burned.
Perhaps future generations will view the crest of Islam on public monuments and buildings, when all liniage to American history will be vanquished - because America slept when the enemy crept in under the cover of political correctness - and we did nothing to stop them!
