Is it Time to Downgrade from Windows Vista?
Nine months after the much delayed, and much ballyhooed launch of Windows Vista, things are not looking good for Microsoft's new operating system. Since its release, users have lodged a litany of complaints against Bill Gates's new baby, including poor device and application compatibility, high hardware requirements, and frequent crashes. In order to sell new computers, which more often than not come with Vista pre-installed, PC manufacturers and retailers are now offering to downgrade customers back to Windows XP. The U.K. electronics retailer Dabs.com now offers to install XP onto new Sony VAIO computers instead of Vista, with the option to switch back to Vista in the future. As we reported last April, Dell has also begun offering XP as an option over Vista, and even Microsoft itself recently made it easier for partner PC-makers to roll machines back to Windows XP.
But, there's more bad news for the ailing operating system. DSG Internation, the company behind several large consumer electronics outlets in Europe (Dixon's, Curry's, and PC World among others) has been forced to severely discount Vista machines after lackluster sales. To add insult to injury, many mainstream manufacturers are now offering or preparing to offer the Linux operating system as an alternative to any flavor of Windows.
Microsoft's Service Pack 1 for Vista is now available in limited beta tests. This first system update is critical for Vista since, traditionally, most businesses wait for the the release of the first service pack before migrating to a new version of Windows. If user complaints are not addressed in this update, many consumers may choose to skip Vista altogether. Considering the fact that Microsoft just ended support for Windows 98 last May, it's possible people will remain with XP until something better comes along.

I have a Dell with Vista and the only problem I used to have was it running real slow with multiple programs going. The Dell came with 1 gig of RAM and I installed 3 Gigs more. That has solved the slowness problem and it runs great now. It is recommended that a computer with Vista have at least 2 gigs of RAM. I can now have World of Warcraft playing and also bring up Firefox to check on how to do a quest without waiting forever for it to load, lol!

My old computer (Win 2000) gave up the ghost finally and I purchased a new one...........there is no choice, everything is loaded with Vista. I purchased a laptop....same thing. Vista is slow and isn't compatible with much of anything. I absolutely hate it........and I hate it worse that I am not given choices!!!
I'm on an extremely limited budget and can't afford just to replace my software and hardware everytime MS decides to force us to use what they want us to use. Vista really blows and you can bet in the future, if I buy another computer it will be a MAC.........I'm sick to death of MS and Bill Gates.

I am sick of the malware , spyware, viruses and unending crap, too. I have a new PC, Vista and it gets real busy and
unresponsive every few days until I clean it out or
call the techie in India. I think we need a new
paradigm. The o/s needs to be on a separate device
that cannot be written over (like they do with the
mainframes) and the browser s/b no more vulnerable to
spyware than a television set. I/d/k what the big
holdup is, but someone could sure make a killin'!

I have been using Vista for almost a year now and find no major problems..it took a bit to get use to a few of the new features but that was a user problem not a tech problem..I like my Vista and would not go back to XP My computer crashed 4 times using XP

I tried VISTA on a 32 bit system and in as much as I liked some features I had my computer "freeze" and require a reboot on numerous occassions. I purchased a "new" 64 bit with 4 gig RAM and installed VISTA. It "freezes" and requires reboots on a regular basis. I've talked with someone who purchased a lap top already loaded with VISTA and they have had no problem. I'm so frustrated I want to smash it to pieces and buy a MAC. :-)

Even though I use XP on my laptop computer and love it. I also use Vista on my main Desktop computer. I love it also. I've never had a crash or anything harsh to happen and been quite pleased with it. The boot up time is a little slow, but that can be faster by eliminating open programs running in the background on any PC. I don't understand why everyone is beating up on Microsoft. Everyone gets to use a computer thanks to Bill Gates. Its no longer restricted use for the Defense Department, Government Scientist and rich Companies. As usual, americans love to kick anyone or company that help this country prosper. I guess it boils down to whos opinion/agenda the public will follow. If you have a stake/stock shares in a particular company and you want to increase your stake/stock shares value. Then you beat up on the competition.

I'm chiming in with another comment. And it goes like this. Why throw the baby out with the bath water. Just maybe its not Vista OS that has a problem. Maybe its the people (whinners) thats using it that have problems. Not everyone understand computers or even know how to use it.
I built my own computer from scratch using parts bought from Tiger Direct. Put in the mother board, mother board pins, processor chip on the mother board, cooling gel under the processor chip, memory chips, primary drive, slave drive, DVD and CD drive, Floppy Drive, cooling fans, power unit, set jumpers, connected all wires by diagram, check settings in bios system and installed the operating system myself and it worked and I'm using it today running Vista to type this comment. My family and friends call me a genius. I'll be the first to tell you I'm more on the level of Forest Gump when it comes to understanding everything about computer language that help make all the above mentioned items work. I'm learning. And when it come to computers, learning is never ending. So don't bash Microsoft's Vista OS. Praise Microsoft for the smarts they have, and they're ability to allow a numnuts whinning idiot/s like yourself to be able to press the power button to turn on your PC.

I love my Vista! The first computer I bought from a TV commercial/infomercial. It was running Windows Mellinium OS. The company went belly up after filling my order and I started to have problems with OS system crashing. When I call tech support numbers provided with my brand spankin' new computer. I was told it would cost me $2.50 per minute for them to help fix my computer problem. I was shocked and pissed off! Just think, I have a brand new computer under warranty and no one to service the warrant, including the maker of the (Micron PC) computer. I was so pissed off I VOWED not to pay anyone to service my brand new computer. So I set forward to learn the ins and outs of my computer. After reading the instructions numerous time and crashing the OS system (probably 30 times) to many time to mention. I started to gain insight and a handle on the OS system and the functioning of inside components/hardware. Today I no longer call a techy for anything inside my Processor Tower, I go to Windows Knowledge Base online which list most problems involving their OS systems. At Windows Knowledge Base, I can list my problem and do a search. If it find a match to my problem all I have to do is follow thier instructions, most times it works and its free. I didn't have to pay a service tech $400 to $800 dollars to make a few clicks, keep my computer 4 days to a week and tell me how hard of a time they had fixing my computer. If I'm having a software problem. I just call the company that made it and they also have similar help programs. My suggestion to the whiners who are having so many crashes is to learn more of the ins and outs of computers, invest in a good firewall/antivirus and spyware program and learn to use it, do regular cleaning mantenance of your OS system, learn to clean your obsolete internet files from your browser and grab your computer instructions and read, read, read. Its cheaper!

I bought a new computer after getting rid of my Windows XP for the new Vista. MISTAKE !!!! Within the month, I had to pay a fortune to go back to XP because Vistas was a complete disaster; it wouldn't take a single one of the programs that I had on my XP. Now I am back with XP and have all of my programs. Microsoft is a monopoly while Bill Gates becomes the world's wealtiest man. Why doesn't the government do something about this monopoly? Vistas is the Edsel of 2007.

I've been running Vista in a new laptop since May and no problems. My desktop still has
XP and I have issues with that. With VISTA maybe I am just lucky (so far).
DanSep 25th 2007 4:17PM
I have Vista and have had no problems at all. I run some very high end applications. The only issue I had was that my old scanner would not hook up to it but that is not a big deal since the scanner was getting old anyway and I needed to get a new one in any case. I love all the features of Vista and have no complaints. I dont understand everyones problems. It seems that most of the problems come from computer users that have extremely old hardware and software that should be updated anyway. You cant keep using your copy of MS Office 98 anymore. Get a new version. Keep up with technology people and you wont have any problems.

I would never switch. I am a blind user and my screen reader costs me big money each I do. Besides, i won't be anyone's ginnipig sucker.

I purchased an entirely new system in June; computer w/Vista, monitor and 4 in 1 copier. All were made by H/P. I owned it 4 days before returning everything because of fustration. During those 4 days I spent approximately 25 hours on the phone talking to H/P tech support. To add insult to injury I had to pay a 15% restocking fee. What a joke!

wait a minute. I like vista and find it's much more user friendly than xp. I actualy have 2 laptops one of each and Vista is nice.

i'm an at-home user of Vista...and i HATE it!!! it's obxoniously incompatible with AOL, even with the Vista version of AOL....several times a day it crashes or freezes.....very reminiscent of Windows ME!!! i have a Gateway...how can i get XP back????
