A Wheelchair Powered By the Mind
(Note: The above video is a bit slow to load ... )
Michael Callahan and Thomas Coleman want to put the minds of the handicapped to work. The founders of the Champaign, Illinois-based firm Ambient have invented a wheelchair powered by the mind -- and, fortunately, you don't need Uri Geller-grade brain muscles to get the wheels spinning.
The Audeo motorized wheelchair works by having the occupant mentally choose word commands for moving forward, back, left and right. When a human being thinks of a word, the brain shoots a signal to the larynx in order to produce speech. The Audeo intercepts these neural signals and translates them into commands for the chair. Unlike the wheelchairs of today, the Audeo will allow a person who is completely physically incapacitated to move themselves around unassisted. And, movement may just be the beginning as this technology could someday allow us humans -- handicapped or not -- to control all sorts of devices with our minds. The only prerequisite would be the ability to think. Sorry, Britney.

The title should be; "A Wheelchair
Controled by the Mind", not powered by the mind. The chair still operates by electricity which is it's ultimate power source, not the mind.

What a wonderful invention. I was wondering if it would be possible to do the same thing with lets say the legs, arms, etc. of a person so that on thinking a word, that part of the body could move just as the wheelchair now does. This is just an idea which you have probably already thought of,and I'am sure that you will come up with this if indeed it is possible.God speed to you and your beautiful minds, making the world a better place to live in. Does this mean you have to mentally vocalize "forward" to go forward? If so, do you stop the moment you stop saying the word? So if you want to get around, you have to mentally vocalize, "forward ... forward ... forward ... forward ... left ... more left ... a little right . . . forward, etc."? The user might get sea-sick.

With all the wasted energy and brain power that is encountered today, it is a joy to find people who turn their talents and efforts to good. I'm a rehab nurse, and know that you will be blessed by many. Too bad you weren't able to develop this decades ago. THANK YOU!
