Apple Offers $100 to Slighted iPhoners
Yesterday's announcement of a price drop to $399 for the eight-gigabyte iPhone probably put a big smile on the faces of anyone who couldn't afford the original $600 price tag. But if you were one of those people who paid $599 or -- gasp -- more on eBay, you probably have a rather different expression on your face. But here some good news: Today, Steve Jobs announced that his company would offer a $100 Apple Store credit to any jilted early adopter. If you purchased an iPhone within the past two weeks, you are eligible for a full $200 refund. In an open letter to everyone else, Jobs said the following:
"Even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of the iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these."
This seems like a fair offer. Perhaps not as fair as a straight check for actual money, but even so, a $100 store credit will get you two-thirds of the way to getting a shiny new iPod Nano!

look its called business, apple shoudnt pay anything pay to those who payed $600, wat apple did was genius in my opinion, they created so much hype they decided to put it at $600 and pplz bought it, it went according to their plan, and when the craze is down, they lower the price, so they can increase the amount of buyers plus making more money, cuz the rate of pplz buying iphones has probably increased since price are down, its genius, Apple deserves getting a medal, for well organized business plan.

The refund is extreme generosity. People who always want to be the first to own something are willing to pay more. They even stand in line to do it. So, why the refund? People wait to buy a new car because those that aren't sold right away are usually discounted. It's the American way. Apple might start a dangerous precedent with their refund.

Apple is embarrassed because a 17 year old kid broke their code on the new gadget and now they are having to make amends to the public. They should have made the kid a millionaire and hired him.

Well that is better than what General Motors did in 2003. I bought a new Envoy in Sep 03, shortly thereafter they lowered the price by, I think $3000. They did not send me a check, a coupon, nothing, nada, nil. When I brought it up to my salesman when I was looking at another car for my daughter, the attitude was FU.

HELLO!!!!! It's just business so stop crying about it!!! It's their company and they can do what they want with it!!!!

I can't believe that people are complaining about wanting money back! Actually, I can believe it, which is the sad part! Everyone wants everything for free...it's a sad commentary on society! You made a purchase! You thought it was worth $600 when you bought it? Has the product changed since then? It is not defective...there is nothing wrong with it, so you don't deserve a refund at all. You paid 600 bucks to "show off"...I hope you got the bang for your buck! Next time, do what just about everyone else did, and wait til price goes down...or buy another product!

Wow. Since when is buying a phone considered 'adoption'?
OK, continue rants...

There's a lot of talk about the regular price drop in products, etc, but did anybody stop to think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, Apple is new to the cell phone market, and they may have overpriced their phone as they ventured into unknown territory for them? My guess is due to the high price they didn't get the overwhelming response they expected and this was their way of quickly revamping their marketing strategy. Did it make them look like an ass? Sure. Was it good business to offer refunds and reassure their customers they care? Absolutely!
I too bought the iPhone for $599...5 days ago. But for the record, when I heard the news I wasn't mad at Apple. I was more embarrassed for having paid full price when I could now get it cheaper. Thank goodness for the refund!

Actually if the crybabies hadn't run out and paid the $600 inflated retail price in the first place, Apple would have made the adjustment sooner! It's called E-C-O-N-O-M-I-C-S! Supply and Demand! They are just adjusting the price of the phone to what the market will support before the holiday season. They aren't even trying to pretend it's anything else people. It's very simple -- technology ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS debuts at a higher price. ALWAYS. Seriously!?!? I wanted an iPhone (and still do, once it's on another carrier and they work the bugs out) but not badly enough to pay the inflated "Lucky Me I Got an iPhone" price!

I think the overwelming success of the iphone might have made Steve a little arrogant. Don't forget your loyal customers of 22 years.
LisaSep 7th 2007 7:25PM
For those that wanted to be the first. That's just the way it is. Eventually everyone will be able to afford it. As they __must drop the price!

Apple -a Growth company, I would think that Steve Jobs knows what he is doing. volume - Christmas Sales. To those of you that are upset - you must not own APPLE STOCK.
Love the Company

What the people who bought that iPhone OUGHT TO BE crying about is its poor performance (very very slow Internet) and even poorer coverage by AT&T. I'll stick with PC based gadgets. They're cheap and work decently.

The supporting customer has a valid right to be upset. We all know that the phone would be less expensive, the razr and other products are good examples. But not 1/3 in 60 days. Many bought the phone as I did and before our credit card bill came in the price had dropped. You know it is ok to make a profit, but not a killing. Many of us also buy Apple Products in support of a fine innovative company. We know it is more expensive and in the past we have been treated with respect. There is greed and timing at play here, Steve wants the Christmas season sales volume and that money and he wanted the new product high price money. He went for both and burned fine supportive customers, not all are just rich people wanting to be the first to have the cute phone.
MonicaSep 7th 2007 8:27PM
What percentage of people want it?
punkyfairplaySep 7th 2007 8:31PM
I bought the phone the first day it was released and was not upset when I heard about the price cut. But if Apple is gonna give me some store credit I will gladly take it.
Preston TurnerSep 28th 2007 2:59PM
If you were stupid enough to buy the iPhone at $600, you got what you deserve, the "first one with the stupid phone" label. HA
Just got mine and enjoy it, and paid MUCH LESS! I'm a happy camper~~~~ hehehe
