Apple's New iPod Touch: Should You Get It?

So What Is the iPod Touch?
This touch-screen iPod is, for all intents and purposes, an iPhone without the phone. Like that recently-announced iconic gadget, the new iPod Touch features the multi-touch screen, the Cover Flow interface that lets your finger flip through virtual 3-D album art, and a feature that lets you pinch your fingers on the screen to resize images. It also includes the motion sensors that automatically readjust the screen to landscape or portrait mode, depending on how you're holding the device. In fact, it looks exactly like an iPhone without the microphone and ear speaker. It's also thinner, coming in at just 8mm.
What's New?
Aside from the touch screen, this thing has built-in Wi-Fi, or wireless connectivity, just like the iPhone. That feature might makes sense on a smart phone, but how does it work on an iPod? Essentially, it means that you'll be able to get online with this new iPod and even browse with the superb mobile version of Apple's Safari Web browser. You can also get on YouTube to watch videos, just like an iPhone. But the really cool and new (for Apple) use of Wi-Fi on the the new iPod Touch (and the iPhone) is that you'll be able to buy music right from the iTunes Wi-Fi music store and download it right to your iPhone -- on the fly.
What Does It Cost?
The new iPod Touch comes in both 8- and 16-gigabyte versions for $299 and $399 respectively. For those concerned about battery life, don't be: Apple is promising 22 hours of audio and 5 hours of video playback.
Should You Get It?
Maybe. With the exception of the phone capabilities, the new iPod Touch gives you everything the iPhone has but in a thinner package that contains twice the memory. Ask yourself whether or not you need to carry only one device. For city dwellers or those who travel a lot, having a phone and iPod in one package is a nice luxury, especially during the summer months when nobody wants to carry around a bunch of expensive gadgets. Plus, 16-gigabytes of memory isn't exactly the 40-80-gigabytes we've come to know and love, so you might want to wait for the next generation of this thing, which will likely have the capacity for more of your media. That said, $100 is a pretty steep price jump if you're happy with your current carrier and phone (and that's the type of person that would be happiest with the new iPod Touch). Besides, with that $100 you could get a nice, functional phone and never look back.

I am looking at buying my 4th iPod. My most recent iPod was the 60 GB model that long reached the limits of its storage space. I had been looking into iPhone as a possible replacement for both my phone (which was just stolen) and my iPod, but was waylaid by its limited size. At 8GB its good memory size for a phone, but not for an iPod, particularly one with a big beautiful screen that you will actually want to use for video. Additionally I was disappointed in iPhones lack of ability to adjust its screen automatically. With the announcement of iPod Touch and it’s ability to do this I was hopefull, but found that the iPod touch too falls short of my needs and many others needs and it does some in a really annoying ways;
Firstly, again, it's too damn small. Its screen was made for video but its storage capacity is barely adequate for the average a digital music collection let alone an avid digital music collector. Now say what you will about the size limitations of flash memory and the bulk that a hard drive would add but the fact is that a portable media player needs to do more than just look good, it needs to for fill the needs of it's users. If it doesn't do that there no point in owning one other then conspicuous consumption. At 16GB and 8MM thick that’s all the new 'i.Touch' does, that is unless you actually like sorting the music and video you will take with you on a daily bases (first generation 5 and 10GB iPods owners know this act all too well). Additionally even as far as aesthetics goes the offering the ‘i.Touch’ in an 80 GB model that uses a hard drive would not in fact make it look like a brick as some one else had previously commented. If you compare the size of the newly dubbed original iPod classic the difference in depth is only an additionally 2.5mm (its total depth is 10.5mm). That’s still very sleek and almost comically supper model esc thin if you think about the operation and storage of the thing.
Secondly it raises some questions about why Apple is offering iPhone in the configuration that they are doing, such as; if it’s possible to make the ‘i.Touch’ at 16GB why stop at 8GB for the iPhone? Additionally why does iPhone not have the ability to auto rotate the image or video on screen to portrait and landscape when apple clearly has this technology available to accomplish this? According to Apples marketing for the iPhone the point in the device was to alow users to carry only one device rather then bolth a phone and an iPod, but the lack of features shared by both ‘i.Touch’ and iPhone does not make this a reality. Also with so much of the focus being put on aesthetics and its price range why is iPhone not all metal construction like the rest of the iPod line up?
Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not just hating on Apple. I adore my iPod (just as I did my other 2 previous) and have them enshrined next to my original Mac+ and ever antiquating mirrored door G3 and I’m very, very exited about the touch screen iPod finally being available to the public. However I find it frustrating that the new models offered in the iPod line up seem almost deliberately not quite right. It doesn’t seem like the size limitations and inequity of features would have been that hard to see as disappointment/problem and makes me wonder if this release of i.Touch and iPhone is actually a deliberate teaser to get early adopters to spend money twice – now, when the item is almost irresistibly hot and then again when the ‘next generation’ that is actually useful is released, and in all probability, in just a matter of weeks from now. Not a bad marketing move but not good move for customer satisfaction or appreciation.
Now faced with having to buy a new phone and the desire to buy a new iPod I find my self unwilling to invest in either from Apple at this point, feeling that either Apple is orchestrating a product release that cajoles very loyal customers into buying a product that they will need to buy an upgraded version of again very shortly or they have completely ignored the already known needs and desires of there customer base. What ever the motivation I’ll be biding my time until the opportunities that exist in there new iPod line up are better resolved. At that time I’ll be happy to return my business to Apple. I can only say that I hope that is done soon.

It would be perfect if I could also use .mac on the ipod for checking and sending email. I've come to the conclusion or me I like a small phone which I can use as a phone and text. For everything else the ipod touch if it included email would be fantastic without it not interested!

I need advice. I don't have much knowledge on Ipods although I have one (Don't know what size or anything as it was a gift). At any rate what should I buy mainly for music, although adding pictures of my kids or the possibility of movies sounds cool but not a decision maker. I travel weekly in the "not so friendly skies" and need something that the battery life will last cross country and hopefully across the pond. The new Touch looks neat but at what cost....Should I go older model or wait for the Touch to increase capacity and lower price. Any advice is appreciate since my knowledge of this tech stuff is very limited. Thanks

When i try to send email via Safari on my ipod touch it won't let me type in email addresses. The keyboard appears on my ipod, and when I tap a letter it animates as it should..but the letters won't type into myaddress box on my compose mail page. If I use my "short list" on my bellsouth mail account where I can just select and address weather than type it..I can proceed to compose mail and send it. I just can't type in an address. Anyone know of a cause and cure? Thanks!

I like the ipod-touch for it's size and being able to connect to wi-fi and watch youtube videos.
One thing is still on my mind is the small size. Will I be able to buy a bigger card to plus into the touch?

The reason why the ipod touch has so much less storage is because they have switched to flash memory for it. This is because the classic and video ipods which used hard drives were becoming damaged because of simply running with your ipod, quick movement of the ipod in other words. this causees the hard disk to become scratched in some cases and they have moved to flash drives now which have the downside of being alot less compact for the storage size

Itouch is defenitely for me, but main concern is the memory, as 16G is not enough for me( i need 12 Gb only for music, i need much more for videos and Pictures), and i think 60Gb or 80Gb would be ideal. also i could not know if the existing Itouch OS allow to use OSX widges, google maps, Skype, and other utilities, because these utilities, are part of day-to day needs

I just got an 8gb iPod touch going from a full 30gb video and I love it. I was worried that I wouldn't have enough space but I just made a playlist with my top songs and a couple movies and I still have about 1gig left.
