Worst Airbrushed Celebs of 2007 ... So Far

When tennis star Andy Roddick appeared on their June/July cover earlier this summer, the editors of Men's Fitness magazine apparently felt Roddick wasn't quite fit enough. The magazine ballooned the size of his biceps in a likely attempt to have Roddick jive with the 'How to Build Big Arms' headline. Roddick joked on his blog that it looked like he'd been given a set of '22-inch guns,' while a spokesman for the magazine was quoted as saying, "I don't see what the big issue is here."

Poor Andy, can you imagine the ribbing he took over that? It's one of the most obvious cases of photoshpping I've seen. He looked great as he is but ridiculous on the mag cover. The proportion of his head to his body is all wrong. They thought no one would notice? LOL

Andy plays right-handed. If you watch him play, his right arm is visibly larger than his left. This is true for almost all tennis players. Also, the camera angle and the way his body is angled enhances this size difference. I'm not saying that the photo wasn't touched (it looks like they shrunk his head), but it helps explain a few things.

I don't know anything about Andy Roddick, but the big arms issue reminded me of another athlete, Mark McGwire. Living near St. Louis, I got to see him play when he was smashing home run records. Talk about a sports hero in peak form! Those pythons he batted with impressed me in person as much as any photo. You can't fake real strength, right? Umm, well... With more steroid allegations flying around the MLB than foul balls, I guess you can. Cosmetic surgery and treatments also enhance "real" rich and famous bodies beyond what most people could ever attain. The resultant distorted appearance expectations breed eating disorders, addiction to exercise and general self-loathing. Such is the price of our shallow society, but we can fight back by not subscribing to magazines that perpetuate the lie of perfection.

Shame on Redbook - a women's magazine -for "downsizing" Faith Hill. A magazine that is supposed to help women and their self esteem takes a perfectly normal looking celeb and trims about 20 pounds off her to a size that no woman should WANT to starve herself to attain. I've got no reason to ever look at Redbook again.

How can anyone live in America and not know who Andy Roddick is? I am just so flabbergasted! Even if you do not follow tennis, he is Everywhere!
