Progress and technology will have to produce life-like robots, because there IS a huge market for them. But not for what you initially think. Way back in the days of slavery, "masters" commonly used their slaves of the opposite gender for companionship. It's simply human nature and I have no doubt the same "needs" will be addressed by robots someday. You can think to yourself it won't happen, but many good futuristic sci-fi stories have some very plausible scenarios, and I can't see any way that market will be ignored, when they will be in high demand (and very specialized).
