Roughing It Switched Style: Three Mountain Gadgets You Need
Satellite phones are usually for emergencies or for those who are way out in the middle of nowhere. These iconic Army-men-styled phones aren't cheap -- around $TKTK for the one we tested, but they certainly work. We were allowed to play with Iridium's Satellite phone in the woods, and finding a signal, even in the middle of bear country, was a cinch.
While we luckily didn't experience any emergencies, we were quite pleased to learn how easy it was to place a call on the Iridium. The phone looks something like an older cell phone from the 90s, but its girl and 45 degree-sloped antennae give away its more orbital purpose. Set-up was easy and the big buttons should make operation in just about any condition possible. If you're going to be far away from cell towers and accidents are a potentiality, bring one of these along.
