World's Richest Man Donating One Million Laptops
Still think Bill Gates is the world's richest man? Get with the times, chico. Mexican businessman Carlos Slim now holds the honor with a net worth of 73.3 billion dollars, and like Gates, he's doing something good with his cash. Slim has decided to donate 250,000 laptops to children immediately, and by 2008 hopes to give up to a million computers.
While no mention was made of what sort of laptops these will be, it's expected that they will be the $100 OLPC X-01 model, a low-cost and high-durability laptop designed for children in developing nations. The little green lappy has a very simple design that makes it perfect for those unfamiliar with technology, and each is made to work as a sort of wireless network repeater, meaning a single wireless hotspot could theoretically get hundreds of children online.

RE:Dickie's response to James: I don't see where James mentioned jobs not taken by American's. We all know there are hard working illegal Mexican's in America who do jobs for low pay that cannot support American's who pay taxes into Entitlements that illegal Mexican's in the majority of illegality receive. If they paid the taxes, city, local, county, state, federal they couldn't afford to live here. I have no problem with "under the table" employment - but a part of the Bill concerning Immigration will clamp down on AMERICAN's who do get paid under the table and thus will open jobs for those coming here ILLEGALLY. I have a notion if these people were from IRAN or IRAQ or PALESTINE - in the numbers from Mexico you may reconsider the tax effect on the rest of American's who pay into supporting people who don't pay all the taxes American's do. It's a matter of corporations paying a living wage to their workers instead of to shareholders who invest - but add no qualitative advantage to those companies they threaten with overhauls if profits fall below expectations. Day workers get paid in cash. Their families - of which there are several grandfathered members and those awaiting eligibility - live in one apartment. Perhaps it's time for larger 3 generation homes again where children live with parents who live with their parents, etc.? Would save a lot of money in child care and elderly care - right? But that's not going to happen any time soon - right Dickie?

Once again, I read an interesting story and a host of racist, ignorant off-topic responses. Are all USA citizens so completely ego-centric that this has to be become about "us"?. Maybe it is just the clientele of AOL.
This man has done a good thing. period.
The fact he is Mexican should have no bearing in the response. If the man were black, would we begin a conversation about aparthied? If he were a white American - we'd talk about the computers.
Little wonder more people than ever are moving to Canada.

OOH--sending 100 dollar toy laptop computers?
What a charitable fellow. At least Bill Gates' neighbors (even those in poor neighborhoods in Seattle) aren't living in tar paper shacks with tin roofs.

Thank you for thinking of underprivileged children, Senor Slim. You set an example for us all. Everyone can't afford to donate a computer, but we know how to hold fund raisers to get computers if our children need them. Everyone can't afford to build a school, but most of us can afford a few extra school supplies to donate to our child's classroom or school for those who have none. America's national pastime has become "bitching." Instead of bitching about Senor Slim's contribution, regardless of his wealth, we should be saying, "Great for those kids." And, "Now, what can I do that is within my means?"

WWHAT A BUNCH OF SELFISH BAS....S YOU ALL ARE! THIS IS GODS' LAND NOT THE USA'S OR MEXICOS OR ANYONE ELSES. CEDRTAINLY NONE OF YOU ARE CHRISTIANS, AS THIS SELFISHNESS IS IN DIRECT CONTRAST TO GODS' LAW. YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SOW SOMEDAY.
alanaAug 4th 2007 9:45AM
Dickie, I agree with you!
Americans need to WAKE UP! The hard working Mexicans do the jobs that we lazy americans do not want to do... ie.... working at the poultry plants, the slaughter yards, picking the tobacco, planting the food you eat.... and for the record, many of the illegals DO PAY TAXES!!! They work at places, ie chicken plants, that withhold taxes yet they will NEVER get any of the benefits from it.

I first want to say that I think it is fabulous that someone is making this type of donation to help children -- no matter where it is.
As for the immigration issue, the key words are "illegal immigrants." Latino's are doing no more than any other immigrant group has had to do. They are doing a lot of these jobs, because they are not here legally, and know that their butts would be bounced back immediately. Why should they be catered to? Haitians, Asian, and other immigrants are doing thankless jobs as well. Even the Blacks who were born here are stuck in some of these jobs. For the individual who made the accumption that this country would come to a grinding hault if we deported these criminals, what the hell are you thinking? We were doing quite well before they crawled under the fence. Yeah, that's right, I can't use the drive through at Burger King, because no illegals are working there. Or, better still, Burger King only remains open because they have no one to operate the business, and lo and behold, the illegals have come to save the day.
Half the time you can't understand what they are saying, because they can't speak english.
If you are here legally, I have no problem. As a matter of fact, most of the legal immigrants are highly educated. And, it is these new citizens that make a major contribution to society. My husband happens to be from India. We had to be married for at least three years before he was even considered for permanent residency.
What you should be concerned about is that these illegal individuals, who are criminals, are getting better health, social, and legal services than you, as American citizens receive. This is just not right.
Am I a racist because of these remarks? No. I am jsut stating fact. I am not personally attacking anyone, except for those who persistantly break the laws of this country, and attempt to justify it.
We turn away thousands of individuals who are seeking asylum because of mass murders and other autrocities in their native lands. Maybe we should focus more on the human rights side of immigration rather than allowing more illegals in from Mexico because we want our hedges trimmed.
My God people. Wake up!!!!!

Who cares if he's Mexican,a right wing Republican, or a "liberal"? He's rich, mega-rich and that's why he can afford to be philanthropic, unlike the rest of us, who in America, the "Great", have to struggle to keep up while the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class gets screwed. Why do bigots jump on the Mexicans? WE are not the problem...it's the corporations of the world, and those that own our governments, i.e, our politicians, who enact policies that screw you. Why don't you get rabid about all the corporate whores who own Bush and Company, as well as some of the democrats? Why must you always blame the powerless? Is it because you don't have the courage to blame those responsible for the crap that our country has become????

The only reason they want to get these poor kids on the internet is to get them use to buying products when they can afford to do it. If education was the goal, they could do they with computer programs that teach math and language.
JasonAug 9th 2007 11:30AM
Children don't need computers. Children need books. Their lack of literacy is the reason why education is so low (both in Mexico and the US). This idiot is just exacerbating the situation. It's only intended to get them to buy his products when they're older. It's pathetic. People need to get their head out of their asses and realize he's no philanthropist.

Carlos Slim should be the president of Mexico. I would like to know he became so wealthy and no one has ever heard of the man. He sounds like he could be the hero Mexico is looking for. He needs to count his blessings and be more of a giving man to the needy people of Mexico who really need his leadership financially instead of illegal immigrants working at fast food joints in the USA for minimum wage. It's really hard for me all these filthy rich billionaires, most of whom inherited their wealth in the first place. Give away a few laptops! what a joke. Why not build a few schools and hospitals in his name in good old Mexico, and be a world role model. Other wise Mr. Slim can KISS MY ASS!
JamesAug 11th 2007 5:07PM
Good Job Mr. Slim that's awesome and anyone who knows there shit about computers wants one of these. Maybe the coolest geek toy ever. And here they will go for between $300-500 but in developing nations they are $100 a pop. Do you know why, because poor kids have a right to the skills and education needed to compete in this world? There's reason so many people have a beef with this idea; it's because they weren’t educated themselves poor dumb anti-intelligent fools wasting time on thing's that are out of there reach. These are the same people who say that that we didn’t land on the Moon simply because they can't themselves aren't smart enough to figure it out. So go back to talking about things you don't understand and pretend that you do. But remember; that there are people who know enough about the subjects at hand to know how little you do, and from here you look like monkeys pretending to be men. Good job Mr. Slim, Good job.
JamesAug 11th 2007 5:10PM
Yeah that's what I thought. Get back to your trailers and useless lives which will never benefit anyone except you and the next time someone does something great that you are incapable of ever achieving; or even capable of hoping to achieve; just shut up appreciate that there are people out there doing good and let the grownups take care of things. If you aren't here to make the world better, then leave because you're just in the way of the people who are; get back to being as irrelevant and small as you really are; and maybe If you did something good for the world you would not be so threatened when someone else does.

It saddens me that most of the things that people have written here sound so terribly jealous of this man who has publically given away his goods. (that is all that money is -goods - that is all that it buys). Sounds like most of you would compalin if he had given them to you personally - afraid you might owe him a debt if he did? Are we damned if we do and also damned if we don't? Seems most jealous people feel that way. WAKE UP! What you feel and think are WHAT YOU GET!
