Laser Printers as Bad for You as Cigarettes
When it comes to economical printing and crisp text, it's hard to beat a laser printer. They'll spit out thousands of sharply defined pages on a single toner cartridge before needing replacement, all while hardly making a sound (and only dimming the lights a little). However, those benefits apparently come at a cost: your health. A new study from Queensland University of Technology indicates that laser printers emit clouds of fine particles when they're in use, particles that are similar to "cigarette smoke and motor vehicle emissions."This means they're incredibly small and can get deep into your lungs and ultimately your bloodstream. Given that similar particles have shown to be factors in lung cancer, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to open a window the next time you're printing out that manuscript of yours ... assuming you ever manage to write more than a page. Maybe you should just stick with poetry.

Back in the 70's, "they" had a study that showed a certain type of red dye would cause cancer. There was quite an uproar over it, big enough that M&M's quit making red one's. Come to find out, you had to EAT around a pound of dye a day for a lloonngg time in order to get cancer from it. Just how much exposure to a laser printer would you have to have before you get cancer from it? If you have to live by it for a hundred years while it continually runs, why worry? For those that think banning cigarettes would be great, how many rights and freedoms will you give up before you realize we are no longer free?

How can a non-smoker's right to want to breathe clean air be an invasion on a smoker's right to light up?? This amazes me...you are the ones lighting that cigarette, cigarettes are harmful!! Not to mention smell terrible! Smokers are the ones invading on non-smoker's rights to breathe!
They can't help it. You claim to own all of the airspace. Your biggest problem now are printers that are in every office in the country, not to mention homes.
Are you concerned about the smell or your health?
Pep- actually they can help it! No one is forcing them to smoke!! I never said I "owned" all of the airspace, but smoking is NOT natural and is HARMFUL to OTHER people, including yourself! I don't work in an office with laser printers, but I am exposed to smokers. And if you re-read my statement, I am mostly concerned about the health, the smell just makes it worse...

Hi Joyce
It's such a good thing to quit smoking when it makes you uncomfortable.
You don't really need a clinic but it would be helpful, I'm sure. You should just quit flat out. "Cold Turkey". The best thing to do is keep cocoa or chocolate on hand. Nicotine takes a few days to clear your system. I smoked when I was in my early twenties, then hated the smell and quit. Sip milkshakes through a straw. For the first few days you'll cough but it will stop. The cough is your lungs clearing out all the tar buildup. It's a good thing. Chew gum. Get some votive candles to make your surroundings smell great.

Every thing is bad for you...the goverment keeps telling us that. So they keep taking away our rights to make sure we are safe and they can keep us all in line. I believe in the laws but soon it will be, you can only have a drink and a smoke while the moon is full on a monday night while standing on you head and wearing red.

Kimberly says:
I for one am really not suprised at all with these findings. I use to volunteer at a local elementary school in the copy room. I would be coughing by the end of the week. I figured it was from me being a smoker at that time. Turns out that over the weekend I would get better. Then by the end of the next week, coughing again. While I agree that smoking did not help the situation, I knew that something in that room was making worse. Now I know. I have since then quit smoking. For all of you non-smokers out there that have never had the displeasure of kicking this habit, it's harder to kick than cocain.
Kimberly,
Deepest sympathy. I have worked in a rehab center
with cocaine addicts like yourself. None of them smoked cigarettes. Most have died under 30. I can only imagine how tough your battle is.
Hang in there.

I have had enough of being evil not illegal, just evil. Non smokers that complain about smoking are reformed smokers themselves that want us to stop smoking because they don't have the will power to stay away on their own. Buy the way most complainers have gay tendencies, drink and wear smelly colone. Anyway what kills us? Smoking? Parts per million to the air around you a puff?..I don't think so..Your car fumes? More likely...Jet fuel on an airplane? your still traveling right? Drinking? yes alot of accidents from drinking but I never heard of an acciendent caused by a driver smoking. That's a fact..More people have drowned this summer in pools than second hand smoke.. McDonalds should be banned..mothers hand out those greasy fries by reaching over the back seat, they can't drive that way and it's unhealthy for the children but no one has jumped on that ban wagon yet. more children have died in New England from sink holes in the sand on the beach so we should ban the beaches. I must mention the lazor printers we all know about. Lets talk about the Weed. Non smokers still smoke pot and here are the stats on that an recreational user is 40% more likely than a cig smoker to develope psycosis and an everyday user is 400% more likely to develope psycosis not to mention it's illegal. I will leave you with this fact it has been noted that smokers have less of a chance of developing Parkinsons disease. So as for me I will continue to smoke, my choice, however I never throw my butts on the ground. That's just rude! Spit on the ground I guess that's OK. It seems to me that we should be more concerned about the gangs in New London Ct. beating people up for no reason. As for the non smokers in this blog form a group and educate yourselves, I am glad to see that you are the minority here.
AddieAug 9th 2007 11:32PM
Hi Joyce, I haven't smoked for 30 plus years. I just stopped and that was it! If you can't do that I know a few people that have gone for hypnosis and it has really worked for them. They do sell DVD's that do the same as seeing a doctor probably for a lot less money.
Good luck and don't give up.
EllieAug 9th 2007 11:35PM
I'm a smoker. I enjoy my stinkerettes. I am always checking my surroundings when outside to make sure I am not offending anyone. I wish others were as courteous and consciencious in public. What really gags me is when I'm in a restaurant or grocery store (or any close-quartered situation) and some hog rips a bubbly, noxious fart AND LAUGHS ABOUT IT!!! Shouldn't we outlaw public farting, burping and spitting? Oh yeah, spitting. How sick and unhealthy to have someone hock a big lugie out their car window, then have another person pick it up on their shoe. Maybe there aren't enough public farters and spitters for the griping non-smokers to attack!

Is the Chicago City Council and Mayor Daley going to "BAN" all indoor and Outdoor in Public places, use of of Laser Printers. I sure hope so. I don't want to have to breath in that Second Hand Mist from those Laser Printers. Come on, Get Off Of Your Duffs, it's costing the Tax Payers Millions of Dollars to treat these people when they get sick.
Man up Daley, Start Your Screaming and Thumping Your Fist on the Podium, Let's GO!!
AngelaAug 9th 2007 11:35PM
ya know everything will kill ya these days...why fight it? I'm a smoker, drinker, printer, caffiene addict. I also use a broken microwave that throws bad particles in the air. I eat food off of the floor. I undercook meat. I feed my dogs tablefood and than don't wash my hands before taking another bite. (I do wash my hands after using the restroom though) Heck, I even drive w/ my airbag turned off. Guess what people?? I'm still fit as a frickin fiddle. Some people are just more susceptible to diseases. The world is a funny place. Live w/ it...or die trying.
KATMANDU01Aug 9th 2007 11:40PM
I used to smoke, in California no less. When I did smoke, I used to think, "I hope everyone of these self righteous non smokers die from my secondary smoke". Now that I haven't smoked in many years, I hope you non smokers die from all the other smokers secondary smoke.I just got a divorce, can you tell?
steveAug 9th 2007 11:43PM
i hope all of you poor, stepped on, unfairly treated smokers who dont have the will or intelligence to quit find some peace and fair treatment after you die of lung cancer!
cheriAug 9th 2007 11:45PM
LOOK OUT ALL YOU FAT PEOPLE WHO ENJOY FOOD. THEY WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUTSIDE ON A SCALE BEFORE ENTERING AN EATERY. LOOK OUT ALL YOU PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO GET A TAN. YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE WILL BAN YOU. LOOK OUT ALL YOU PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO ENJOY ANYTHING THAT IS STILL LEGAL BUT IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH. AFTER THEY TAX YOU THEY WILL PUT YOU IN A CORNER WITH A DUNCE CAP.
JeanetteAug 9th 2007 11:44PM
No problem...I'll just make sure my office printer is on wheels, and wireless. That way I can go outside in brutal heat, freezing snow, or raging thunderstorm and print my data while having a smoke break. Guess my insurance rates will go up even more for working in an office with a printer. I wonder if the office deadbeats will get an insurance break for not doing their job?
jackieAug 10th 2007 12:04AM
hey eduardo, i don't know if you know it, but dying of lung cancer is extremely painful. Are you saying that you'd rather be in excrutiating pain for months, or even years, before you die than live happily for even longer and die peacefully?
DeeAug 9th 2007 11:49PM
As an ex smoker, I stand in defense of the smokers today. It reminds me of my childhood when the blacks were made to sit in the back of the bus and drink out of seperate drinking fountains. Hell, even had their own public toilets. Smokers unite....you're next on the list. And all the while, they keep raising taxes on cigarettes to offset poor spending by our government bodies. Shout it out. . speak your opinion.

I don't smoke.
You are exposed to smokers, but, not a laser printer.
Yikes, how is that possible? Laser printers out number smokers 1 million to 1.
DebiAug 9th 2007 11:49PM
I don't smoke, but I've been around them all my life and it doesn't bother me a bit. I've never understood people who want to push smokers around and tell them where they can and can't smoke. Making a separate section in a restaurant is one thing, especially with small children around, but to treat them like leapers and bully them with threats of smoke bans is wrong. A little bit of smoke at the door won't hurt you. Find a topic that really matters, like world hunger or AIDS. What a stupid argument.
