JVC's New High-End, High-Def Camcorder

JVC has announced a new entry to its higher-end line of (HD) high-definition, hard-drive based digital camcorders. Called the HD Everio GZ-HD3, the cam offers a three-CCD image sensor, meaning separate sensors for each color to improve low-light performance and overall color handling. Though it's a high-definition cam, the new Everio can't quite manage the full 1920x1080 resolution that makes up 1080i, available on many HD TVs today, but it still captures video at a quite respectable1440x1080.
The camera sports a 60-gigabyte hard drive, which is capable of storing up to seven hours of high-def video. Plus, you can plug in an SD memory card for capturing stills or shorter video clips. The 2.8-inch LCD not only shows you what you're recording, but also enables access to some assists JVC has built into the camera. For example, one of the assists puts an outline around what is in focus, which ideally ensures that, say, your wife on the jet ski is in focus, but not the tree branch in front of you. Another assist paints over-exposed areas of the picture with black and white stripes.
If you're looking for a compact yet high-end HD camcorder to capture your summer vacation, the HD3 looks like a solid choice -- just make sure your adventures happen on dry land and you can afford the $1,300 price of admission.
