Microsoft Xbox 360 Reliability Woes Continue

Microsoft recently moved to address reliability fears with the Xbox 360 by extending the warranty on all of its consoles to an impressive three years, at an estimated cost of one billion dollars. So, job done, anger quelled, issues sorted, right?

Not so, unfortunately.

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the company by a gamer in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, alleging that his console scratched one or more of his games, making them unplayable. This is a common complaint, typically said to be caused when the box is moved from upright to horizontal (or visa versa) while a game is inside and spinning, something the Xbox 360 user manual clearly states is a bad idea. The suit only demands that Microsoft replace damaged games (or provide equivalent payment), which seems fair enough, but the media fallout so soon after the earlier reports of hardware failures will surely be much more costly.
