Microsoft Xbox 360 Reliability Woes Continue
Microsoft recently moved to address reliability fears with the Xbox 360 by extending the warranty on all of its consoles to an impressive three years, at an estimated cost of one billion dollars. So, job done, anger quelled, issues sorted, right?
Not so, unfortunately.
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the company by a gamer in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, alleging that his console scratched one or more of his games, making them unplayable. This is a common complaint, typically said to be caused when the box is moved from upright to horizontal (or visa versa) while a game is inside and spinning, something the Xbox 360 user manual clearly states is a bad idea. The suit only demands that Microsoft replace damaged games (or provide equivalent payment), which seems fair enough, but the media fallout so soon after the earlier reports of hardware failures will surely be much more costly.

I used to be a fanboy for PS3 but i've realised that it's anti-progressive for me to favour one console over another. This console war will only divide attention of game developers and force them to go multiplatform to turn a profit, that will inevitably harm quality compared to developing it souly for one system.
But Xbox360 reliability is the one thing holding me back; the games, HDMI, online service and everything else has matured and hopefully the new design will eliminate RRoD, but their reputation is damaged and they have to work hard to earn it back.

I have had no problems with my XBox and as a gamer I have to say it has the best graphics - better than Playstation 3. XBox will recover from this because they have the best technology despite some apparent glitches - Playstation is limited

The 360 is a rushed-to-market piece of garbage.I have bought two,and #2 is in Texas getting "repaired" right now...we'll see.I won't give Microsoft another penny of mine if it returns to me and breaks down in three hours, like it did out of the box new.
The PS3 has a failure rate well under 2%, from what I understand.I will be in line for one if my 360 drops dead again.

I am on my third XBox360 also.. This is my issue. They keep saying (they being the guys at the local video game store) that the new XBox360 Elite is supposed to have the bugs worked out. That is their big selling ploy. So after camping out all night, and shelling out close to $500 bucks for the original one, I'm now supposed to trade mine in and pay an additional $250 - $300 for the elite, in hopes that I can finally have one that works... Am I missing something here? It seems to me that if this is in fact the case, why doesn't Microsoft replace all the faulty 360 units with the new Elite units, and be done with it altogether?

Dude it like buying a car. You never buy the first model. Wait a year or two untill the kinks get worked out, although sometimes you may luck out and have a good console. Im still waiting till there are no more bugs.

This isnt a desighn fault on the side of the Consol... but it's the idiocy of the person who uses it... if he read the manuel he would have known not to swith the position of the 360 with a disk in place... he should NOT get any money threw this law suite..

And yes I scratched a game dis,c but uggh I deserved it as I read the manual and forgot what it said...until I heard the disc getting scratched. My own fault not Microsoft !!!! My friend is on his fourth console all replaced within the warrantee, my console which I bought at the same time same place still works, its all down to temperature I have mine laid flat in the open. Friend has his on top of his amp under TV in cabinet. The consoles are mass produced with minimal solder so when the temperature rises the internal components simply brake away from the main board, also the main board mounts are to tight and cause damage at the slightest nock. The trick is if you can’t look after it break it before warrantee is out.
