Toddler Dials 911 From Cell Phone 287 Times
Cell phones in the U.S. are required by law to still be able to access emergency services even if deactivated. That piece of information could have saved one woman, who gave her 4-year-old daughter her cell phone to play with, a whole lot of hassle. The little girl, not quite understanding what she was doing, dialed 911 over and over again. The 4-year-old did this a grand total of 287 times in the month of June, sometimes as often as 20 times during a shift.Emergency personnel were only able to track the phone to the apartment complex where the child lived, so they resorted to a simple ruse to find her -- they offered to bring her McDonald's. An operator asked her what she wanted and she replied "McDonald's," so authorities convinced her that if she told them where she lived they would bring her McDonald's.
Needless to say, when the authorities arrived, the mother took the phone away.

When a person dials 911 from a cell phone that isnt tied to a cell company all the operator gets is a blank location screen....usually just the cell tower which could be miles from the actual call so there is no number to call back and no location to start going to. try having a clue about what the job entails before you start commenting

I really hate to say this, but I have to agree with Willow Reed. Any parent stupid enough to give their child a cell phone to "play" with should pay the consequences! Four year olds are not stupid!

Reasonable Person: Maybe before you criticize anyone about responding above pre-school level, you should learn how to write and spell.
It was a dumb mistake, but a REALLY dumb mistake. Luckily, the 911 people knew how to find her and stop it. But I bet it got obnoxious after a while!

So what happened.... did the 4 year old get theMc Donalds? If not now the 4 year old won't believe the police anymore and think that they're liars. And, I agree with ones that said just check the phone once in awhile. And, 287 x's oh come on...

I can see the humour, but 911 is the emergency line and "cute" doesnt fall into this catagory as it is a matter of life or death. How would you feel if it was your child needing emergency care and the dispatcher is attempting to get a 4 yr's old address to ask Mommy to remove the battery or take away the phone. I would think it more humorous if the kid called the white house or the mayors office as this is not taking away from a life or death situation. My solution is, the cell carriers should be able to completly deactivate a cell phone so no numbers will be able to be dialed for people who get new phones and render their old one garbage. The deactivated ones with potential to be reactivated should keep the 911 activation. That way if it is given to a child to play with the 911 wouldnt be activated thus no police will be bribing a kid with McDonalds in order to get the childs address. Its a difficult topic but I stated and rest my case. D

Does anyone else find it disturbing that they felt it was OK to lure a 4 year old into giving out her address to a stranger over the phone? I mean...I guess I understand the need for solving the problem and I don't find fault so much in the 911 operators, but come on...Maybe you should tell your kids it's NOT ok to do that...

This crap ties up EMS and is not cute.
Buy the kid a toy phone if you must or do what I did and teach your kids that the telephone is NOT a toy

I have 2 chidren and do not find this the least bit funny. This was just pure laziness on the mothers part. If she would sit down and spend some actual time playing with her daughter instead of just giving her a phone so she wouldn't have to pay attention to her this would not have happened. The child should be old enough to know better if mom spent time teaching her anything.
GregJul 19th 2007 6:20AM
Yeah sure blame it on somebody. It might as well be the child! Like people haven't dialed numbers by accident while their non flip phone was in their purse or pocket. Big deal!!!! At least the child knows what to do in case of an emergency.
GregJul 19th 2007 6:22AM
And willow reed, you are just an idiot. Plain and simple!

reasonable person-- are you kidding me? your comment was just as immature
911 oprAug 14th 2007 11:45AM
As a 911 opr ...this kind of thing with kids calling 911 from non working cell phones is a huge problem ...someone commented "i wonder y it took police so long.." ...well "smartie" as you may not know ...when we get a 911 call from a non working cell phone, we only get a 4 block radius and i dont know what tiny town w/population of 3 you live in ...but in a middle sized metropolitan area...it becomes difficult to pin point exactly where the child is calling from ....also not only is that one child calling from a non working cell phone tying up real emergency calls...but it's putting other people's lives in danger! Then you have "punks" calling 911 saying suck my #$!$ and F@#$ you calling us every name in the book from these very same cell phones...i would love to see all non working cell phones disconnected from even calling 911!!! I'm over these callers that tie up 911 lines for their stupidity! So ..in closing dont give your kids cell phones to play with ...if they "need" to have a cell phone to entertain them ....buy a toy one! it ...i promise will not call 911 and put other peoples lives in danger!!!! Consider yourself educated!

I am so glad I saw this tonight. I did the same thing--I gave my old deactivated phone to my kid. As far as I knew, if it was deactivated, it WAS just like a toy. I had no idea. Now I know why they're putting GPS in all the new phones. And no, I don't think it's cute or funny, but like this parent, just didn't know! The phone company doesn't tell you this!
MellisslynnAug 29th 2007 8:00AM
Of course its a little funny. However, It is the moms responsability to know what her child is doing. First of all, her 4 yr old is telling perfect strangers where she lives. Where is mom while kiddos having this conversation?
loriSep 4th 2007 9:08PM
I a 911 operator cannot tell you how irritating it is to get calls from dumb kids ALL DAY! they know exactly what they are doing by calling 911, you wouldnt imagine the crap we hear from these " oddlers" and when u call 911 from a cell we dont get an address, we get a cell tower address, so ya it may take a while to find u if u have an emergency and dont know where u are! And another thing parent give their stupid kids phone so they can stop bugging them, they figure "oh here play with this phone and leave me alone" i seriously hope we start charging all the 911 ABUSERS asap! i dont care if they are 4 yrs old or 80!
