Sprint Drops Soldiers for Excessive Roaming

Last Friday, we reported that Sprint had dumped "problem customers" who the carrier felt called into its customer service lines too often. The letter, dated June 29, was sent to 1,000 customers notifying them that their contracts would be terminated. It read, "The number of inquiries you have made to us ... has led us to determine that we are unable to meet your current wireless needs."
Now, Beta News is reporting that Sprint is also excommunicating people who it feels roam out of network too often. This just happens to include about 200 soldiers. In a post on SprintUsers.com, Shafted_Sprint claims that when he and his unit returned from Iraq and were redeployed at West Point to train cadets, those who were Sprint customers (about 1/3 of the unit) found that they were roaming off-network, despite being told by the carrier that West Point was in an area of "best coverage." And here comes the kick in the pants: At the beginning of this month, Shafted_Sprint and several others received letters from Sprint notifying them that their contracts would be cancelled for the amount of roaming they were doing.
To add insult to injury, West Point is merely a temporary stopover for these guys before they return to their home station where they use Sprint regularly, on the network with no problems. Now they'll be returning home without cell phone providers. What's worse, Shafted_Sprint claims that many of his unit members bought new Sprint phones when they returned, having been away in Iraq and their phones being behind the technological times as it were. According to Shafted_Sprint, some soldiers received their cancellation letters from Sprint the very same day Sprint sold them new phones.
One thing is for certain, a tide of anti-Sprint sentiment is cresting. When we posted the original story last week about "problem customers" being dumped, readers went wild with posts about their own terrible experiences with Sprint. After reading just a few of them, it's no surprise the carrier lost 220,000 customers in the first quarter of 2007. It didn't take Switched users long to come to the conclusion that you can now easily get out of your Sprint contract if you're unhappy, and you don't have to pay a cancellation fee. Simply nag the customer service lines and you'll be dumped in no time!

Where are these letters? How old were their plans? Sprint has changed their roaming agreements and DOES NOT cancel customers for roaming too much. And Me being a customer, I am glad they are getting rid of the 1000 deadbeat customers who are calling customer care 60 times a month! Why should I have to wait on hold forever just so some scumbag can call in for $10 worth of dropped call credits and ask for freebies!
I am so sick of these bias reporters who bash Sprint, but leave other carriers along. Where were you when both Verizon and Cingular canceled thouands of customers for using too much of their so-called unlimited high-speed data? What about when Cingular canceled the accounts of thuands of customers 2 years ago for roaming too much?
You just want to kick them when they are down!
If you are going to bash, THEN BASH EVERY CARRIER FOR THEIR FAULTS!!
Bias!!!

I have cingular/ATT when my teenaged daughter decided she liked to text, I got the unlimited text messages for her. Unfortunately it was half way through the month, and she'd already run up 80 dollars in usage charges. I called their customer service and explained my financial situation. The CS representative said "Well, it looks like you made an attempt to switch to unlimited but she beat you to it." Then she got approval to credit me for most of the extra text charges. When my daughter dropped her uninsured phone into a toilet, they gave me a new SimCard and advised me on how to get a really cheap phone that would hold her over until we're up for a replacement phone in December. That went a LONG way to winning my loyalty as a customer. I'm a bit over a year into a two year contract. If they continue with the good CS, I will gladly stay with Cingular/ATT!

I had Sprint for a long time until my husband got military orders for Alaska. I was told that coverage could not be guaranteed so I could suspend my contract until we returned. I faxed a copy of orders and 4 months later received a $600 bill for the cancellation of my 2 lines. When I called Sprint, the response was that I did not qualify for the military suspension because my husband was in the service not me. Nevermind that the phones were in my name under a government contract and rate. They will not correct this situation and I refuse to pay $600. Sprint lost a loyal curtomer.

grscuba I had the same thing happen to me without notice they changed my bill when Nextel took over and my bill shot up they said they would no longer honor my plan I had with Sprint I was furious.but anyway Sprint sucks period and if they would have better coverage and service people wouldnt have to do the roaming thing at all.It pisses me off cause I can be in a area where at one min I can pick up signal and the next I have to hit 1 for roaming sucks ass.As soon as my contract runs out they are gone I may even do it befor then still debating the issue but after this they want to drop the service of the men and women who put their lives on the line for our country this may just be the straw that breaks the camels back.SPRINT SUCKS!!!!!
