Traditionalists might balk, but the holiday shopping season is already underway. Skeptical? Head to your local department store and you'll be inundated by Christmas trees and ornaments. Bargain hunters, though, know that the real deals are more than a month away.
Black Friday, traditionally, is when retailers truly slash prices. Early birds can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars off of their holiday bills. Switched.com checked with a few elves, who gave a sneak peek at what you can expect deal-wise this year.
Blu-ray Players and Movies: Blu-ray is shaping up to be the biggest door buster of this year's Black Friday. de Grandpre expects at least one retailer will offer a Blu-ray player for just $49. Look for bargains on Blu-ray films as well, with last year's hit titles (such as "Iron Man") to fall as low as $5.
Laptops: With the proliferation of Netbooks this year, it's never been easier to find affordable portable computing, but Dan de Grandpre, CEO of DealNews.com says it will get even cheaper on Black Friday. Look for well-equipped Netbooks to sell for $199 – and basic 15" laptops to go for as little as $249.
HDTVs (Pretty big): The holidays are typically the best time to buy a new TV – and Black Friday is the time to do it. If you're looking for a normal sized set, you're in luck. Piper Jaffrey analyst Mitch Kaiser says he expects to see 32-inch LCD sets for as low as $299. GottaDeal.com is estimating 37-inch plasma and LCD sets will fall to $399 or less.
HDTVs (Really big): Need something bigger? How about a 46-47 inch LCD set for $599 – a 25 percent savings? Or a 52-inch LCD for $999? Dealnews says you can expect both. Plasma deals will be a little harder to come by, but a 50-inch set should run roughly $899.
HD Camcorders: You've wanted to shoot your child's school play in HD for a while, but haven't been able to spring for the pricey camcorder. This might be the year. Low-end, flash-based 720p models could drop as low as $60 (though you won't be able to zoom with those). Expect a high quality 1080p HD camcorder for $349.
GPS: While navigation systems have dramatically expanded their reach this year – even making it onto the iPhone – there's still a market for car-based systems. Dealnews predicts you'll be able to find a no-name entry-level system for $49, while a Garmin or Tom-Tom brand will be as low as $69.
Digital Picture Frames: Showcasing your digital pictures consistently gets cheaper. This year, skip the 7-inch screens and focus on the 8- or 9-inch ones, which should be available on Black Friday for as little as $30.
Monitors: Computer monitors might not be the sexiest of gifts, but they're usually welcomed with open arms – and they'll be cheap this year. Name brand 22-inch LCD models may go for as low as $99, while 24-inch models will drop below $150.
Memory: Don't know anyone who needs a monitor? External hard drives are always popular, since they're an easy way to back-up data. Dealnews expects a 1TB drive to fall as low as $49 this year. Gottadeal is looking for 8GB flash drives to hit $15.

Purchased iPhone and it was very easy to get up and running. The itunes interface was clear and helpful. I had an itunes account however I had to give the information again. That was a small inconvience. I am pleased with the interface and the features. I will be learning more every minute on the interesting programs. Tough to justify the price, but if you added a iPod, a Blackberry, and a GPS might come out right

LMAO
I think this is funny as hell. All those people stood in line for hours, spent hundreds of dollars for a damn telephone and due to a glitch they can't even use the things. I'll bet the customer service employees got an ear full yesterday.
It reminded me of when people were fighting in the stores and acting a damn fool of those Cabbage Patch Dolls.

Couldn't agree with you more PurpleRaindrops. Hundreds of dollars for a telephone. Something they probably have 2 or 3 of already.
Could have donated that money to a homeless shelter or helped some of their less fortunate relatives.
What idiots.
LOL

I have to also agree with both PurpleRaindrops and HellOrHighWater, this is crazy. You spend all of that time and money on a phone that in six months will be out with the old in with the new. I have to say, at that time Cabage Patch dolls rocked....

the whole phone is piece of s...t. Took me forever to activate. Got a huge headake to transfer music. Still did not transfered everything. You have to be a computer geek/nerd combined to use this damn thing. For money I paid it should be easier to use. Or at least user friendly. I am very very disappointed. To make things worth you can buy chinese version of this phone which can utilize mp3 files and has TWICE AS RESOLUTION. I feel that I was ript off.

I agree with you all. I spent 600.00 for mine. I have the imate k-jam and it is about the same as this new phone. I had the original version imate-jam, had so many problems with it that I had to switch it for the new version because the company had to work out the kinks. You spend all this money and you have no one that knows how to operate it when you have a problem. I love my phone, but I do love to be up on the newest technology. Probably will wait for the kinks to get worked out on the iphone first before I purchase it.

Subject Reasons why the iphone blows.. ;-)
Body: You won’t be able to sit in line and pull out your iPhone to play games, because the iPhone DOES NOT HAVE ANY GAMES. Games from the iTunes store are not compatible.
Although you can fill it up with 8 GIGS worth of mp3 songs from iTunes, you CANNOT CUSTOMIZE YOUR RINGTONES WITH MP3 SONGS
Although it has the “most advanced” interface using your fingers and the touch-screen, you CANNOT USE VOICE COMMANDS OR VOICE RECOGNITION OR VOICE DIALING.
The keyboard supposedly isn’t a real bother after you get used to it, but TYPING PERIODS AND COMMAS ARE A PAIN IN THE NECK, requiring you to go to a 2nd screen each time. Given that you use a period or comma in almost every sentence you type, this is NOT CONVENIENT.
Even though it has a 2 Megapixel camera, you CANNOT SEND PICS TO OTHER CELL PHONES VIA MMS PICTURE MESSAGING.
You CANNOT FREELY USE THE iPHONE ON OTHER CONTINENTS WITH SIM CARDS - you are restricted to AT&T international roaming networks only.
You CANNOT DOWNLOAD OR ACCESS ITUNES DIRECTLY from the iPhone, you always have to do it through you PC or Mac’s iTunes program and then sync files.
You CANNOT USE IT AS A MODEM like you can with the Samsung Blackjack and my Sony Vaio laptop.
The iPhone CANNOT GET REAL-TIME GPS MAPPING like you can on the Blackberry 8800 because it is NOT GPS enabled
You CANNOT GO ON VACATION OR ROAD TRIP WITHOUT YOUR CHARGER because it doesn’t have a removeable battery, so you cannot use multiple batteries as back-up or spare
You CANNOT LOAD MORE THAN 4GB or 8GB worth of video, music, audio, documents, contacts, email, etc because there is NO REMOVEABLE STORAGE CARD supported
The iPhone CANNOT SURF THE WEB AS FAST AS MOST COMPETITOR PHONES like the 3G Blackjack or Blackberry because it does not support 3G (i.e. The NYTimes Site took almost 1 full minute to download).
You CANNOT CONNECT TO ALL iPOD DOCKS AND CONNECTORS currently out there - most will work, and a upgrade may be in the works, but for now, you may have to buy yet another accessory to connect the iPhone to speakers, car radio, etc.
About connections, not all earplugs/headsets will fit into the jack since it’s reported to be a extra deep connection. Some accessory manufacturers are going to sell $40 adaptors just to get their standard earphone jacks to work with the iPhone properly. Be ready to add $40 to your purchase price!
You CANNOT WALK OUT OF THE STORE WITH A WORKING iPHONE - you’ll have to go home and activate it through iTunes.com
Since the iPhone DOES NOT HAVE A REMOVEABLE BATTERY, and the expected life is 300-400 charges, you’ll HAVE TO SHIP IT TO APPLE TO REPLACE THE BATTERY EVERY YEAR OR TWO just like iPods. Who wants to be separated from their smart phone for a week every year or two AND have to pay for it!
Intelligent keyboard and all, but you CANNOT COPY/PASTE ANYTHING!
Oh yeah, you HAVE TO LITERALLY PAY AT LEAST $2196+ FOR THE iPHONE for your 2 year contract. That’s a lot for a cell phone, no?
Ill stick to the my blackberry!

It appears the touch pad will be hard for many to adapt too. Some seem to be easily impressed. I will wait to see how many still like it after a couple months of use. I think their may be a increase in traffic accidents due to the iphone. Since most say they cannot dial with one hand. One curious thing I have seen with Apple products. People seem to overlook the flaws on Apple products. If say Microsoft made the the phone, the experts would be all over the two handed dialing and the activation problems. I personally think human's will always prefer touchable keys to typing on a flat surface.

I LU-LU-LU-LUV THIS PHONE! I have NEVER been a person to care much about gadgets, but I guess there's a 1st time for everything! Although the lines were very long on Friday, the Apple geniuses made the process quick and painless. The phone is beautiful, AMAZINGLY functional, does everything it boasts and then some, and it was a snap to get activated!
I have a friend who picked one up yesterday, and although he has the newest macbook Pro laptom, he has not yet been able to activate his phone because he hadn't accepted any Apple updates on his laptop over the past month.
As long as your system requirements are up-to-date, it should be quite simple to get going! It took me less than 10 minutes before I was talking on my new iphone.
I LOVE YOU APPLE!!!!!! (I can't believe how nerdy/techy I sound) heehee!

A curse on ATT and APPLE for unleashing such an un-adulterated piece of crap on the world. I've never had a worse experience with any techno-gidget in all my 54 years.
Bought it, brought it home. Tried to activate ... tried again .... two days later still trying. Brought it back to the store and paid $50 restocking fee. Meanwhile my old ATT account is dead and I don't have a cell phone now.
Not a problem. I canned my ATT account and bought a sidekick from another carrier.
May ATT and APPLE (the un-Holy alliance) Die a painful death and never bother us again with such garbage.

Waaaah! I had to be the first one on my block to have the newest toy that I was told can't live without, and it won't work right, and I paid too much! Waaaah!

I only saw the iPhone briefly today, but it looked rather different than I thought it would. A little less Apple, a little more Samsung? I am genuinely surprised about the compatibility issues Lupe was talking about, I sure hope they fix that.
My favorite thing about the iPhone craze is watching others. The picture of the first guy in line in NY is pretty priceless.

Early Adopter Blues!
Didn't any of you people who sat in line for the privilege of spending $600 for an iphone understand that you an EARLY ADOPTER? Do you get that you will be subject to the technological shakeout that will occur as this thing gains exposure in real use across the country? This is Apple's first experience with phones. There will be lots of upgrades and changes, improvements that will make this device more usable and reliable. $40 for an adapter that will allow you to plug a pair of standard headsets? All of the nonsense that Lupe has listed above? These bugs and shortcomings will be worked out over time, and the cost will come down as volume picks up and competition comes into play. I paid $500 for my first Razor - imagine that. Now they are giving them away with a 2yr contract. And the Razors today have all the bugs I bought for $500 worked out. When you buy the first ones out, you have to expect problems and shortcomings. After all, you're am Early Adopter!

When you see the 'privileged', noveau, vanguard of early iPhone users on the street, keep the following tidbit in mind before you begin frothing at the mouth or, worse yet, wetting yourself:
How much to make a $599 iPhone?
$220 - Oh no, tell me it ain't so........!
Apple hasn't said much publicly about who's supplying the various bits of the iPhone, but US firm Portelligent has been trying to find out, via the unorthodox means of tearing a handset to pieces.
It claims the touchscreen is made by German firm Balda, the main microprocessor chip and flash memory comes from Samsung, while another chip comes from NXP Semiconductor. But most startling is Portelligent's conclusion: that the cost of materials in an 8GB iPhone add up to around $220.
That doesn't include the final assembly costs, but cor, eh? It's a fat profit whichever way you look at it. And, of course, it leaves plenty of room for price cuts in the future once the early adopters have all piled in...

A friend of mine just got an iphone and he's extremely pleased with it. No trouble activating it, he said and he loves being able to scroll the page up or down with his finger. I think this phone will get even better over the next year or so. The price will come down, the battery power increased and Apple will do with this phone what it did with desktop computers, laptops and the ipod.
