Hot New Logitech Webcams
If 19th-century German optician Carl Zeiss were alive today, he'd be a very rich man. Today, the company he founded (and named after himself) has an impeccable reputation for manufacturing super high-quality camera lenses. Nowadays, his name is dropped by nearly every pocket-sized digital camera in search of street cred. Now, Logitech has struck an exclusive deal with Carl Zeiss (the company) to feature Carl Zeiss lenses on a new line of high-resolution webcams for both desktops and laptops. As far as we can tell, this is a first in the normally low-res webcam arena.
Logitech's QuickCam Pro for Notebooks (laptop version) and QuickCam Pro 9000 (desktop version, pictured above) are both 2.0 megapixel cameras capable of capturing far clearer video than your typically grainy sub-1.0 megapixel webcam. Both versions will sell for $99 and should be available in stores within the week.
We met with Logitech to check these out and were impressed with the clarity, accurate color, and fluid motion these cameras are able to reproduce -- it was better quality than we would have expected from webcams.
But be warned: All of that extra resolution may make those naughty late-night video chats a bit less appealing for the person on the other end of the line.
