PSP Gets Speed Boost
Sony's PSP (PlayStation Portable), despite being over 2 years old, has gained popularity of late thanks to a recent price cut to $169. Now their piano-black portable has gained a performance bump, too. Sony's latest PSP firmware update enables game developers to run new games at 333 megahertz, a 25% speed boost over the 266 megahertz the PSP runs at for current games.
The reason for the speed restriction was to save battery life, one of the PSP's most problematic design shortcomings. Just what sort of impact this increased speed will have on aging PSP batteries remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: this upgrade will only apply to new games specifically designed to take advantage of it. In other words, don't get your hopes up for smoother frame rates in 'Wipeout Pure'.
