NY Times Shows Off Cell Phone Application

One of the latest (and coolest) mobile applications comes from the 'New York Times' of all places. It's called SHIFD and it enables you to quickly pass information from a computer to a mobile phone and back again.

As you can see in the above video, the current version of SHIFD works with a smart phone, a PC, and an RFID card/reader combo. When you put your RFID-tagged phone on your desk, the reader recognizes it and your computer brings up the SHIFD application. From there you can add feeds from your favorite blogs, short notes to yourself, and other online content such as directions to a restaurant for the evening. SHIFD then sends you a text message with a link to all the info you've requested, including the posts from your favorite blogs and directions to the restaurant you were looking for.

While SHIFD hasn't been released to the public yet, it's not far off. It appears they're doing away with the RFID reader part -- a good move since not too many people have RFID antennae sticking out of their laptops.
