Five More Reasons Not to Buy the iPhone

Considering the sheer hassle (namely, the long lines) involved in buying this thing, it might be time to look at some other reasons to hold off. Take a look at our list of extra reasons not to buy the iPhone – we hope they make you feel a little less like you're missing out on the most-hyped launch since....PlayStation 3? (you know, should you actually decide to go home and rest after a long week's work on Friday.)
1. You Must Have an iTunes Account. Not the hugest deal considering that most people use iTunes anyway, but it would be nice to have some other options for purchasing and managing your music.
2. No Direct-to-Phone Downloads. There's nothing like hearing a song you like (or thinking of a song you want) and downloading it right then and there, directly into your phone (or audio player). Sure, you can't do this with your iPod, either, but the feature is increasingly the norm on music-capable phones from Verizon and Sprint. Now, given that Apple has said that the iPhone will feature a full version of iTunes, it's perfectly possible that, come Friday, over-the-air downloads via Wi-Fi could well be a reality on the iPhone.
3. No built-in GPS. Like over-the-air downloads, built-in GPS is increasingly the norm on many lower cost phones from Sprint and Verizon. Sure, the iPhone has built-in Google Maps that give you directions from point A to point B, but good luck if you deviate from the route or get lost, since the lack of real-time GPS won't recalculate routes automatically based on your actual location (which you probably won't know anyway, since you'll be lost). To be fair, many of the other smart phones competing with the iPhone don't have GPS built-in either – case in point, the otherwise very satisfying BlackBerry Curve – but the feature is increasingly commonplace on many new phones from Verizon and Sprint.
4. Even 8-gigabytes (GB) of memory is not enough . If you watch a lot of TV, or are going on a long trip that involves even just one ten-hour-or-more flight, you'll quickly run out of video entertainment with just an iPhone. And since it has no expandable memory option, the iPhone can only hold a Nano's worth of media and that's it. Now, each movie takes up about 1-gigabyte of space or approximately 250 songs. This means that if you have, say, three movies and 1,000 or so songs, you've pretty much tapped out the larger iPhone's memory.
5. It won't play nice with your work e-mail. If you wanted to use the iPhone as your work phone, you'll most likely be out of luck, since the it won't play nice with Microsoft Exchange Server, which is one of the most widespread work e-mail systems. Yes, it'll connect with your Outlook and transfer emails that have already been retrieved on your desktop, but don't expect real-time push work e-mail a la BlackBerry. [UPDATE: It looks like Apple has added Microsoft Exchange Server compatibility, but you still have to get our employer's IT department to implement some settings -- good luck!)
So, it's okay. You can rest easy and go home on Friday, without an iPhone. Even if you still can't stop thinking about it, you can always get a line waiter on Craigslist for $250 or so (at last count).

So let's see... Jobs choose AT&T's Edge because the slower bandwidth uses less power... and that was an issue why...? Because you can't remove/change the battery... I gotta love it. Just like the phreaking iPod, they got you by the short hairs. I'm sorry, but if you can't even change the battery without giving Apple even MORE money... Well, I guess this will be good for the iPod battery swappers, once the get it figured out... But I honestly don't see it. And I'm not some Luddite, I make my living in high-tech and love it, but only when it makes sense! And this clearly does not. Form (SHOULD) follow function.

Whoever said the PDA's are insureable is not true. I have a PPC 6700 with Sprint and I love it. It is insured!

THE IPHONE LOOKS REALLY KOOL BUT WITH AN AT&T SERVICE? THAT SUCKS, AT&T IS THE WORST! I HAD IT AND IT SUCKS. AND NO NAVIGATION SYSTEM... COME ON.. EVER A RAZR HAS NAVIGATION SYSTEM... THAT MEANS THAT IF I WANT A NAV ON MP3 MUSIC I SHOULD BUY A MOTOROLA PHONE.... AND I BET THE INSURANCE IS NOT GONNA BE CHEAP.... IPHONE IS FIASCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Steven Jobs is a marketing genius. My office and studio are littered with dozens of his products which for the most part perform mediocrely. But boy they sure look good, and it impresses clients when they walk in the door. This is just the latest and greatest in a long line of toys from the puppet master. Do I want one? Yes! Can I afford it? Sure! Is it the answer to all the techincal dilemas which face our affluent society today? Well..yeah...if you bought Apple stock at $12.00! Will we see Paris Hilton talking on one as she drives her Aston Martin down Hollywood Blvd, as she sips her Bombay saphire from her Starbucks paper cup? As soon as Steve can get one in her hot lil hands we will! Ehhhh...makes you forget about the wars and floods, and disasters. Hey if you guys at the CIA are listening...airdrop a few of these in Afghani hills, maybe you can track the signal and finally find the elusive Osama. I hear he's dying to get some live porn in those moldy caves he's been crawling around in the past few years. "Jobs flushes Osama" I like the sound of that headline. Are you listening Rupert Murdock?
iPhone SchmiPhone...don't you people have lives to tend to? It's a teenie tiny walkie talkie which is going to lose reception every chance it gets. Wake up and smell your signal strength people!

The Iphone is nothing but hype. Apple over prices and makes cheap easy to break equipment. Apple also climes that it is the only device of its kind even though there are many smart phones and PDAs that have the same or similar features.

The "iTunes account is required" is illegitimate. That's only if you plan to purchase and download songs. The iTunes program itself allows you to rip songs from cd, as well as transfer music (including music from peer-to-peer file sharing programs) to your device.
Most of these "reasons" are bogus, as modern opinion articles are not very professional, and are mostly rooted in bias without basis.
I'm going to give MY legitimate reasons to not get one:
1. AT&T. Verizon would have been the superior choice, and sales would prob'ly be insane if they went that route. But hopefully they'll find out.
2. The number 4 reason on here was legit, the limited storage. iPods hold 80 GB of data, so limiting that to 8 GB was just silly.
Those are all. But basically, people need to educate themselves about these sort of things before doing the typical american thing, and just running your mouths about it, solely based on what someone else says. Try doing your own learning. The internet is full of information, yet no one seems to know how to use it.
BillJun 30th 2007 5:40PM
But lemme go ahead and add this to my previous comment... Apple is truly innovative, prob'ly more so than most companies out there. Have any of you actually friggin used a modern Apple computer with Macintosh OS X? Those who have, will understand and appreciate this. It's usually those who have no clue, who do the most bashing.
My previous comment does do a little bit of criticism, but it's not bashing, in the least bit. I sometimes wish that Apple would get into the Auto industry and start building cars. I'd be all over it.
I'm pretty sure that the storage capacity will increase once enough are sold, and HOPEFULLY in 2 years from now (when the AT&T business contract expires) they will expand carrier choices to other companies (cough-Verizon).
Anything Apple builds, by nature, is almost always the easiest to use, and the most stable, as far as its operating system goes. The person who made the previous comment that this is a full computer, and can access the internet as it's intended to be, is indeed correct. Pages are not dumbed down.
To the technophobes, who seem to constantly fear innovative progress: why are you even reading this online? Shouldnt you be reading this in a newspaper instead? Quit using technology, and go live with the Amish. I hate you.

Fantasy thought: Money is no object! I would buy one just because it's new. Reality: If I had the money I would not buy one. cingular (hiding under the name of AT&T) is the reason. I had AT&T wireless before cingular took over, great service, coverage and people. cingular took over an suddenly I had dropped calls, errors on my bill, hidden charges and it was nearly impossible to reach customer service(sometimes they couldn't even find my account). They also kept trying to get me to switch. Friends who did switch got treated better bu service was still lousy. No iphone for me, I'm spending the money on a spa day.

Hah, I have an XV6700 (Apache for those in the know) It does everything I want, and if I am really jonesing (I'm not) I can make it "look and feel" like an iPhone by adding a software skin. All without signing up for AT&T which I previously had, and which I can confirm is terrible service - I had to cancel, and I didn't pay because they agreed they had been unable to provide me with satisfactory service!

Just because you can afford to spend 600.00 on a phone doesn't mean you should.
1. Never buy anything when it first comes out. Just like cars, never buy the first model year. A product needs mass use before all the bugs can be identified.
2. I find it ridiculous that they are going to charge 30.00 for a loner phone so they can charge you 90.00 to replace the battery. I don't care if it's a penny-why are they charging the consumer for their own short-comings? I can only imagine what it will cost to replace or fix a phone that has a bug.
3. Don't pooh-pooh the fact that this is a large glass screen. When I bought my Palm Life Drive (cost 600.00 at the time), I broke the screen within the month. I learned the hard way you have to have a hard cover - cost another 70.00. With this being a new phone, new screen, new shape, how many screen protectors and cases are there out there? I also don't want to have to remove my phone from a hard case every time I get a call, and trust me, without a hard case this large fragile screen will be broken easily. That’s another 30.00 for a loner and who knows what to repair the screen. If they are like Handheld's you might as well replace the whole phone for the cost to repair it. How many times have you dropped, sat on, or left your phone on your car or in the heat of your car? Bye, Bye phone.
4. Never buy anything in a monopoly. They have you by your short and curlies because they know you can't do anything. What are you going to do cancel your contract and take your phone elsewhere? Uh no, can't do it. Almost everything related to this phone will be in a monopoly from the accessories to the programs, and incompatible with most other devices. That's the reality of new technology.
5. No GPS? Sounds like a little thing, but I ask this. Why does a 200-300.00 phone have it and not the 600.00 phone? What else doesn't it have or do? If I'm buying a 600.00 phone it better have all the features a cheaper phone does. It's like buying a BMW 7 series and air-conditioning is an upgrade. Uh hello.
I'll be keeping my Life Drive and current phone until I'm given a reason this phone is worth the switch.

it's pretty easy to figure out that many of these comments are posted by competing companies. (what a shock)
i can't afford an iphone but i don't wish misfortune and spread vicious rumors like the ones i've read. have these gentle spirits actually used an iphone for longer than a day? i can tell you the answer is NO, yet they act like they know what they're talking about. what chutzpah! ya think the hippest people are not getting one for Christmas? some people spend more for a purse than this state of the art tool. if it's good enough for tech expert Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street journal, do you think i'm going to listen to these big mouth bloggers?

I just bought the LG enV from Verizn and its one of the best phone I have owned. You can get it for $150 with a new plan, and it has a full keyboard, gps, mobile web, aim, and bluetooth. And, if you buy it online you get an instant $50 rebate, and free overnight shipping. The mobile web may not be as good as the iPhone's web, but it still does what its supposed to do.

Being an Ultralight pilot, if it doesn't have real time GPS, and the ipod doesn't, I'm NOT INTERESTED. Brie

You don't have to have an iTunes account. Just load the software you idiot to activate the phone. As usual, facts are wrong..but typical from someone who doesn't use the iphone and is dribbling misinformation. Have you actually used it? or spoken with someone who has one? Probably not.
5 reasons I bought the phone the iPhone:
1. Who cares about GPS? I have TomTom and I usually know where I am headed.
2. What if you are site impaired? Can't see the screen on a regular phone? iPhone is excellent for reading your email and the web when needed. Oh and grandma is delighted to see the pictures when I visit her house with my iphone and can easily view the photos with ease.
3. What if you Don't download ringers? Personally, I hate those ringtones and enjoying the ones on iphone. ANd like another posted...downloading music to a mp3 able phone is costly. Download for .99 cents from itunes and load on the phone's ipod or play the song at home on my stereo system.
4. What if you use a Mac and all the other Apple functions? Works seamlessly with Mail client, My safari browser, and iCal. Oh and my iPhone also works in my vehicle filling my cabin with all my glorious music and podcasts! I drive, don't fly, don't care about how many movies I can get on there.
5. I wanted a portable non laptop solution that the blackberry or other smart phone couldn't offer me so that I could see in real time what my suppliers have onhand. Couldn't do that with the razr.
6. I added this one to the list. THE DAMN THING WORKS JUST LIKE ALL MY OTHER APPLE PRODUCTS.
Have you ever thought that the iPhone could be for people who aren't tech savvy and don't want complicated products? Guess not, you're too busy knocking anything Apple creates. Green eyes are always abound these days.

It is an expensive piece of gadget not worth buying. Also, the touch screen is prone to getting smudged up and dirty. Also, you have to keep it away from moisture. The other thing, is that the choice of wireless service is as bad as the price tactics itself. AT&T/ Cingular has poor quality service, poor customer service assistance- usually a recorded prompt before getting you to the human representative.... unacceptable sales pitch, intrusive mailing tactics, poor reception- despite its misleading advertisement of "raising the bar"- has a high rate of missed call.... also, customer service for AT&T is not available during the weekend.
greyherrenSep 10th 2007 1:53PM
Switched staff and all the ones that blow the same hollo horn....Just for the record and all those people who can't recognize a breakthrough from a lousy product...Apple just sold 1 million iPhone is 74 days...who else comes even near that?
The iPhone is truly great and can be much improved...you have to start somewhere...and then its not some windows/blackberry/etc un-practical, non-transparent, bulky and cheap piece of equipment.
I don't regret any of the 599 buck i paid for mine, try to find anything with that performance, now at 399! Stop whining and make the trip to the Apple store, get over your prejudices and accept the fact that Apple is the leader..even if it makes mistakes..haven't any of the competitors ever made any? the road is littered with such stuff like the Zune and others....so i fully agree with badbeamer
